well i was connected to one for a long while, if u know what i mean. but as for the africans in general, at times i feel connected to them as i feel connected to mexicans (i don't feel connected to mexicans by the way .... except for the ones i dated when i lived in texas)... i know what they show me on tv, books, and news papers (i know more about ethiopeans than any other africans due dating one) but that's about it.

when africans have struggles and various other issues i hope things get better for them and it touches me more than it does when other countries, continents, and people have their issues and struggles. but to say that i would change my name and wear dashikis (sp?) and look like an x-clan member, would be a lie.

i have love for them, but don't necessarily love them. kinda like my relatives that i only see every other 2 or 4 years.

BB123,

Not really. I'm often quite aloof to, confused, intimidated by the little I know and glean of Africa.

In theory, I feel African Americans and Africans (and West Indian and European) Blacks should be allied. Thus, I feel I should invest more into connecting with them. Because were there genuine fidelity amongst us, our American talents/privileges combined with those of the abounding human and material resources of Africa, could prove a most FORMIDABLE alliance.

But, alas, I believe Black foks - regardless of their area on this globe - so often appear to enjoy undermining each other for the fruits of my glorious theory to ever be realized.

And most times I look down upon Africa because I'm reflexively the arrogant African American filled with the hubris this country imbues within ALL of us.

When I meet some. I can say every time I have I have got along fine with them. I must say, pound for pound, I have got along better with Africans than I have my own African American folks.

I look at these guys, especially when they are from West Africa, and they look just like the people I have been seeing all my life--because basically they are.

Why do you ask?

I don't feel especially connected to Africans until they do what some have done upon meeting me: scrutinize my face and tell me what tribe I look like I might be descended from.

There are Africans Who don't like American Blacks
I Work with a South African lady,
WHO HATES American Blacks
A lot of Her Hate comes from the way
American Blacks and Whites have treated her
I don't blame her.
I dated a South African female in college,
Honestly I'd rather date a South African female
than a American Black female,
South african women are LOT MORE Classy
and are NOT AFRAID TO WEAR THEIR HAIR NATURAL.

I was very confused as to how to answer this question but then i realised - it really depends on the person.

I feel most 'in common with' west indians and sometimes latins as often they have experienced the same kind of things I have in relation to upbringing et cetera.

I have loads of african friends, one who I haven't spoken to in ages and was a very very good friend of mine, who I get along really well with but I don't feel particularly 'conneted' with in certain ways. We may connect on certain issues and on ideas et cetera, but that is due to how we get along as people.

Latina_wi,

I thought BB123 meant do we African Americans feel connected to Africans as a whole. Not as individuals.

Sure I have African friends and associates. And my dealings with them are not materially different from those I have with African Americans.

Latina_wi,

I've generally found the LONGER Africans are residents of America, the more inclined they are to relate, ally and empathize with us.

I have a HUGE respect for many africans. I have always found that ones from nigeria and ghana especially were great believers in education and that is to be praised.

I know two girls (one a good friend, one a complete bum lol) who were very closely related to members of the Ghanian government. One of the girls is doing very well in university and the other is a teenaged mother who was desperate to fit in she lost her virginity in a park and now has a baby who the father paid for her to get aborted.

I think these two girls highlight my differeing experiences with african people. One tried so deperately to fit in she got it completely wrong and the other had the utmost respect for her afrian heritage and remains a great credit to her parents.

I see that a lot out here. There are those who look pathetic in their attempts to be viewed as 'one of the gang' and those who don't forget where they come from. Probably not a phenonmen (sp) in immigrant ethnic minority groups.

What do you mean and now has a baby who the father paid for her to get aborted ? Also, why would you consider a teenager that got pregnant a bum ? Her experience is no different from Americans of all backgrounds period. These two girls HIGHLIGHT your different experiences with Africans ? What do you mean "probably not a phenomenon is immigrant ethnic minority groups ?? I'm not following you Latina_Wi. Can you elaborate ?

It is the detail of how the girl got pregnant that are pretty disgusting. The guy is a well known drug dealer who is 'in a relationship' with a girl who recently had a baby also and has a terrible repuputation. The father siad he wouldn't look after or pay towards the child because he gave her money to have an abortion.

I consider the girl a bum due to her whole demeanour, not the fact she is a teenage mother. My own mother was a teenage mother and she is FAR from a bum. And if her experience is a typical 'american' or african-american experience - doesn't make it right does it?

the girl lost her virginity in a park for goodness sake - what more is there to say. Considering her Dad's position in the Ghanian governement she should know better, one of theose holeir than thou who never does wrong but is quick to criticise others.

The girls differing views are life are probably not that 'amazing' in the sense that they probably made decisions and chose routes that many from immigrant routes probably chose for themselves also. Do they try hard to fit in or remain loyal to their own culture.

Latina_wi:"And if her experience is a typical 'american' or african-american experience - doesn't make it right does it?"

Well, first of all you're talking about teens. Promiscious teens (male or female) are going to find any secluded area(house, car, classroom) to have sex ! LOL ! And I didn't say it was right. But when it comes to teens, no matter what nationality, some things are just to be expected if they're lacking guidance, supervision, etc from their parents. And when you state "try hard to fit in" what do you mean ? That's a very vague statement. Fit into what ?

Fit into their adopted country's culture. I have seen it quite a few times (and not just with african immigrants obviously).

It isn't even the fact that the girl had sex in the park, it is the reason why she did it. She wasn't even being led astary by 'bad girls'. I just found her whole attitude pathetic, especially considering that her family didn't raise her like that.

Moreover, she lied about her nationality to 'fit into' the group when no had a problem with where her heritage was from (she ishalf nigerian but I think she was raised in Ghana).

I know we don't go into this world representing anyone but ourselves but considering she was a 'proud Ghanian' she gave all my good Ghanian friends a bad name.

No, in your mind you allowed her to give your GOOD GHANIAN friends a bad name. That's pretty stereotypical and naive to think that this one teenaged Ghanian girl represented all other teenaged Ghanians. Mabye she was rebelling, and you don't know what was going on in her household to judge her or cause her to do such a thing. Unfortunately, she lost her virginity to a drug dealer and got pregnant. Well, shit happens. I'm sure it was a difficult learning experience but she can move on.

She had a baby by a drug dealer who paid for her to get an abortion and wasted her parents money which they used to provide her with a good education and you think ir is - 'shit happening'.

How did she waste her parents money ? She can still go to college. She did get an abortion right ? There's tons of kids who blow their college money on stuff they have no business doing. I'm not saying it's wise...but well shit happens.

THE FATHE ROF THE CHILD PAY FOR THE ABORTION.
Maybe I didn't word that correctly enough for you - but now it is all cleared up.

Her parents paid for her education, yes she can still go to college (though i doubt she will even though she is quite smart). She didn't have a bortion, now she has a little boy with no father in his life, I think even she realises that no amount of white washing can take away how bad this situation actually is. Yep, a lot of kids do waste college funds but it is usually on electrical equipment, clothes and even holiday abroad. She has to wait for a long time to be that carefree again.

Funny how a thread that started about whether or not non-African Blacks feel connected Africans sorta morphed into a debate on the evils of teen sex.

Latina_wi,

I lost my virginity in the basement of an abandoned building. Is that any less bummy than getting one's first bone-on in a park?

I’m starting to see it as a case by case situation. I was ignorant in believing that all Africans are the same, they’re not. I used to have a romantic view of Africa/Africans; I guess I'm a little more realistic now. They're just like all other groups/cultures: they vary.

Because I have a few friends who are from Africa and they see things differently than most African Americans.

When I see another black person in the street, I am inclined to smile and nod, and that of course includes Africans. So yes, I feel a connection to black people, period. But do I feel a special connection to Africa? Sort of. I feel for the innocent people who are caught up in the bullshyt politics brought on by corrupt leaders and post-colonialist influence. However, I wouldn't move there. You couldn't pay me enough. I don't identify with aspects of the various cultures, in particular, the way women are subordinated.

i feel both disconnected and connected. when i was a romantic pan-africanist, i felt connected. the important word here is 'was.' now, i only feel connected to like minded africans, those with whom I share a certain intellectual and political consciousness.

i also feel disconnected, however, from my indigenous group, african americans, sometimes. and this is on account of the like mindedness i also share with africans and others folk from around the world, which is a certain kind of cosmopolitanism.

I actually, interestingly, feel connected to just about everyone on earth.

When I dated a japanese guy, I hung out mostly with his friends and family who were japanese and korean. When I dated a bangladeshi dude, I hung out mostly with his friends and family (he actually had a few friends who were married to black people, and one friend of his kept leering at me). When I dated a Somali, I hung out with his family and friends (and none of his family dated american blacks that I witnessed).... I once dated (ONE DATE) an El Salvadoran and had to bring along a friend to translate. The guy who tried to set me up with the blue/blond Brit was a good white friend of mine who had met him when they both lived in France.

I've been to friends' homes and have been the only black among arabs (and I know this sounds racist, but I've never dated them because their men are SCARY), the only black among asians, the only black among latinos, the only black among whites (NO ONE LIVES ON THE MS/AL COAST BUT REDNECKS..LOL), the only american among africans....so I basically don't discriminate against africans any more than I would anyone else.

Which (seriously, and I still think your question is a good one!) is why I kind of find your question a little odd. Why should we feel disconnected from africans? We feel the need to try to connect with asians and hispanics who come to our neighborhoods....so why not africans?

Something I found interesting....

I basically had to hang out with one group at a time......my bangladeshi friends HATED hispanics and whites.....my indian friends hated arabs (but they tolerated pakistanis only in this country).....so it was rare for me to be in a mixed group of them.

And then there were the fundies versus the others, even though the hindus and buddhists were the most acceptable of them all....
