My cousin submitted a treatment to Disney about a black princess from Africa. Disney announced that "The Frog Princess" is in production about a black princess from NOLA. Maddy is her name and there will be a Maddy doll and all sorts of other mechandising opportunities. I am not saying Disney stole my cousin's idea, but it makes you wonder... |

I guess we'll find out. Tell your cousin to get her lawyers(cause she's going to need a team) ready ! Major production studios are notorious for doing this kind of thing. |

Hey Ms. Jackie- My cousin is Marc McGee, from Sacramento. LOL. I saw the treatment and his plan for his princess, ie merchnadising tie-ins, sequels. His princess was from Nigeria, which I had argued may cause a problem with (white) American Disney. He decided to write this story after the birth of his daughter. He has self-published for years and was dismayed there were no characters like Snow White, Pochanatas or Ariel (Little Mermaid) for black girls. Here is Disney's Maddy:

Disney Princesses' are big business and make a heck of a lot of money. Often they are part and parcel of little girls childhoods, I hae friends who still love them today (lol, we were going to go out on a fancy dress night as a Disney Princess of our choice). When you consider that Africa still has a royal prescnece, with certain tribes headed by chiefs and kings, it is odd that they haven't made a film or cartoon with an 'African princess'. Moreover, consider the fact that Africa is the home of Egypt. I hope they do follow through with this. There is a petition floating about on the web with the aim that Disney will have a film featuring a black princess (and complaints that there are no Hispanic ones or Indian ones also). |

Ohh sorry Robynmarie, I should have pointed out I meant 'South Asian' when I wrote Indian. I think this is a long time coming! Especially as the face of America is getting far more overtly multicultural (I know it has always been built up of different races but multicultural in the sense that different races are far more common in it's mainstream et cetera). |

Yes, there is always the possibility that Disney (after seventy years of animation) just happen to come up with this idea-after my cousin met with them in 2005. It seems like they would have said something to Marc before they took the meeting. They could have been picking my cousin's brain.

Robyn, This sounds great -I hope it happens! When my older girls were younger, I never purchased anything from the "Princess" series because there were never any black/biracial looking princesses. I always thought the concept was/is very cute, though. So, for my newest little one, this would be fabulous!

ROBYNMARIE: It seems like they would have said something to Marc before they took the meeting. They could have been picking my cousin's brain. Yeah bit strange that they didn't say that they already had an idea to him beforehand. Guess they were starting to realise that they needed to do something about a black princess and your cousin idea was the push....? Is he going to take any action or enquire about it at all? |

Robyn - I'm sure your cousin feels awful about this and I hope for his sake that he has his ducks in a row, because it's not as if Disney operates on originality. Walt Disney created Mickey but most of their movies - Cinderella, Snow White, Pinocchio, etc. - were all based on stories that were already in the public domain - copyrights would have expired long ago since many of those stories were written or told in the 1800s and before. Billions of dollars from ideas and stories that are free for alls.

NOLA=New Orleans Louisiana. Mzuri-Interesting point. Obviously Disney has the $$ and resources to develop ideas that are already there. Marc, bless his heart, tends to be a little too trusting. He burned his Princess story and marketing plans on CDs and was giving it out to folks (including me). Everything is copyrighted. I am positive he gave one to the folks at Disney during his meeting in Century City in 2005. Still, it would be nothing for Disney to use Marc's idea with the thought that if they got "caught" all they would to do is throw a few bucks at the original writer and go on about their business. I guess we will have to see the script to know whether or not Disney "stole" my cousin's ideas. As I recall Marc's princess gets kidnapped, falls in love, etc. Standard Princess type stuff. In Marc's script there is a character, a grandfatherly type who is actually telling the story.

Marc has all his very detailed documentation, IF it turns out Disney stole. The question is can he find an attorney to take his case pro bono? It will cost lots of $$$ and time to fight a juggernaut like Disney. |

My cousin is Marc McGee. Funny how people assume it was a woman who wrote this story. As I explained before, Marc created a black princess after his daughter was born. I don't think Disney has created any black Prince, kings or queens. For years Disney had been known as a racist company. They didn't even used to hire blacks or Mexicans at Disneyland. |

Robynmarie, Seriously DOUBT you'll be able to get an attorney for such a case pro bono. To much potential cash on the table for a self-respecting ambulance-chasing lawyer to miss out on. But you might be able to get a couple to consider taking the case on contingency whereby you have to give him/her a material percentage of what you win in court/settlement. |

Marc is my cousin and we just found out about "The Frog Princess" yesterday. Marc really invested a lot of blood, sweat and tears in this project. After he got the meeting with Disney, he developed this whole marketing plan, wanting to impress them. I am thinking now that could have been a mistake. Abm- Yes, I think most of these cases are taken on contingency. Before Marc can do anything, he'll have to see the script. It could be Disney came up with the idea on their own. You can't copyright an idea-only an original work. |

Those Disney folks aren't dumb bunnies and an idea can't be copyrighted, so if someone goes there and says I have an idea for a character, a pink fairie that giggles and spins blah blah blah - they can swoop right on it and there's nothing that anyone can do. Now if you have a script/screenplay, and they use that script with only minor variations to try to make it seem original, then you've got a case. And I am not an attorney, just hold a few federal copyrights.

Absolutely! So far, the one obvious difference between Marc's story and Disney's is Maddie is from New Orleans and Marc's Princess story is set in Nigeria (I'll have to get her name). However, even then if the dialogue and other characterizations are similiar, Marc could have a case. This reminds me of the sista who claims they stole her story and made it into The Matrix. Anybody know what happen to her? Did the producers settle?

Maybe, Robymarie, your cousin should give Disney a little competition by pitching the exact same idea to some black film makers and then let Disney studios try and sue him - if they dare. Somebody like zillionaire Russell Simmon's wife who has a very successful clothing line for kids, might even be interested in diversifying her "porfolio" by producing movies about ethnic princesses. LOL. |

What I hate about Disney's new "FROG PRINCESS" movie (what an icky title)....is that the PRINCE is WHITE (Prince Harry no less) and the black "Frog" is a "maid" to the beautiful White side-kick in the movie. I really don't like that. The LONE "black male" character in the movie is an "EVIL-comical-villainous" alligator. All the people in charge of producing this film are "white males". This isn't a good image for our children to digest at all.

I know. I LOVE how Maddy looks, but the script is frightful. And with the "ethic" I raise my boys on, I wouldn't want them subjected to this. Their father has done a superb job with them and though you wouldn't know it from my "free-talking" on this board....it's crucial to me that they only see POSITIVE images of Black males and when possible---black love. We work overtime on providing and monitoring that. They won't like watching Maddy sail off with a white boy. I'd like to make a live action film about 6 black princesses (that way, we could show the range of hues w/black girls) and have these 6 princesses have to meet in a specific spot to carry out an adventure together. Or I thought about a "goddess film" featuring all the different goddesses around Africa. They only have American Indian goddesses in America. Lakota being my favorite. It was hilarious seeing PASSIONS and the down low story being talked about on the board when I've just recently been working so intensely at NBC Daytime. Which reminds me to KEEP WORKING.

Yvette, I wish it were that easy to get the financing. This is why I strive to become "bigger", because I'm almost to the place where a loan company will loan me $2 to $3 million to make a film. Live action can be done for peanuts, but animation takes big money and lots of employees, which is the ONLY reason I would try to make a "Cheetah Girls" type movie about Black princesses. I'm starting a Perfume business now just because the more companies I own, the more easier it will become to barter and bargin for these loans. And if one of my books should catch fire and sell 3 million copies---that would help, too. I'm always plotting and working towards these goals, but sadly, almost ALL my support usually comes from White people, never black women or anybody you would think. Black women would rather sit up and gossip about me---but I can sit at the top of Rockefeller Plaza and eat lunch with the Programming Chief of NBC.
Btw **Stephen Colbert LOVES me!!!!!!! He makes everybody read my memoir.

I agree Jackie. Neither "Maddy/Madeline" or "Frog Princess" ...is intended to do this girl justice and that's really an indication of their "shakiness" with the idea of a BLACK princess. I wish Debbie Allen or some black woman was a Producer on the project, because right now it's ALL WHITE MALE and when they hired Randy Newman I gave up any hope of a good project.

All the freakin' talented African/and Black American composers/musicians available and the best they could do is Randy Newman ?? Have you ever listened to Sam Brown For The Record on KPFK on Sundays @ 2pm. Last month he dedicated a whole program to black composers because of the lack of recognition they receive in the music industry. |

Sam Brown is the bomb. I wish they would go with some real fresh new AA composers---especially for a project like this one. But see...if we had a Black female Producer or Advisor (which Disney usually does on projects like this), that person could have suggested someone really good. Unfortunately, (and I am telling you), they got nothing but White Males "patching" this movie together. From that turn-off title "Frog Princess"... to her being a MAID to a white child ....to the old Voodoo grandmother ...and that atrocious name MADDY. Goodness.

Yea, right. "Celebrity" Kola is hounded by the paparazzi. Her pictures are splashed on all the magazine covers. Folks mob her for her autograph. Her books top the NY Times best-seller lists. She's a much sought-after guest on all the talk shows and a fixture at all of the A-list parties she's nominated for a Nobel Prize. Get real. Kola who? LMAO. |

Most people don't even know who the hell Kola Boof is. The same is true for me, but who gives a sh/it? These things take time. Kola is usually mentioned as a kind of joke. When I get more recognition for what I'm doing it won't be because I claimed to have slept with some dumbfuck terrorist. Re: the Colbert thingie, like I said, I saw the whole segment, and Colbert was very(and rightfully)patronizing. The tone of ridicule in his voice was so obvious. I also remember KB bringing up Dave Eggers' name. Like that means something. REAL insiders in the lit world know that Eggers is a fucking laughingstock, almost as bad as that J.T. Leroy fool. |

The silly shit that Kola seems to take pride in is astonishing. She sucked someone's dick, she's a terrorist's sex slave, she's a secret squirrel spy being guarded by the FBI, CIA and Secret Service and on and on. It's difficult to retain all her bullshit - but normal decent ADULT people would be embarrassed to confess to any of that crap. And don't forget - she's a confirmed L-I-A-R so if anybody actually believes any of her garbage they're probably stupider than Kola.

Colbert only patronizes and ridicules people who are good grist for his mill. People like the deluded kola boof. He'd have a field day with you, ABM. He loves to make fun of boot-lickin wimps. LMAO. |

EXCUSE ME, But now who's a PACK of /ing liars? Anyone can go to YOUTUBE and watch Colbert's segment on my book---it was, as Doberman described it last year---"A virtual commercial" for the book. Colbert, as his blog shows, CONTINUES to promote my book. And for the record....though this may come as a shock to the water babies...Colbert doesn't "make fun" of Kola Boof. HE LIKES Kola Boof. I mean---he REALLY likes her. Maybe if he looked like ABM, Cynique, he'd get somewhere. But he don't, and I'm sure he laughs "goodnaturedly" at that, too. Schakspir's claim that "everyone" sees me as a joke is born from his own crotch, which is a joke. My royalty checks from Sony Pictures and NBC say "screenwriter" on them. I am a card-carrying member of the Writer's Guild. I bet the other black writers in America don't think that's a joke. Talk shit all you want, it's understandable for a bunch of jealous slags....but I'm young and I've only just begun, that should be obvious, too. If I were you, I'd exhibit some CLASS...and just "politely" hate that Kola Boof, but everything posted by Cynique, Mzuri and Schakspir comes off as a jealous rant.

Yawn. I didn't tell a single lie, kola. You are not a celebrity inasmuch as your name is not a household word and the amount of people who have heard of you is miniscsule. You make great grist for Colbert's mill because of your loony Osama Bin Ladin claims. ABM is your knight in dull armour who fends off the truth-tellers with a plastic lance and if you couldn't fall back on your old "jealous" retort, you'd be mute. Actually, I think you're jealous of me because, unlike you, I don't need fame to fuel my existence. |

You were. http://www.thumperscorner.com/discus/messages/179/24023.html?1173288723#POST9075 0 What royalty checks are you receiving from Sony and NBC? It's truly amazing....this fat disgusting cow simply grows more and more delusional by the minute....I actually thik she enjoys being berated, it's good publicity for her. On the other hand I'd simply do a book tour or read on the radio. BTW it's only the cranks, screaming queens and Afrocentric nutjobs who are talking about Kola Boof. Colson Whitehead, Darius James, Carl Hancock Rux, Edwige Dandicat, Zadie Smith, Yours Truly, and a lot of other black literary big wigs from either end of the political spectrum aren't. |
