Subject: "Why I Hate Blacks." AsianWeek Date: Fri, 2 Mar 2007 21:02:51 -0800 Newspaper editor apologizes over contributor's column that was hateful toward blacks SAN FRANCISCO — The editor of a weekly newspaper that circulates to Asian readers across the country apologized amid uproar over a column titled "Why I Hate Blacks." In the Feb. 23 piece, AsianWeek contributor Kenneth Eng listed reasons why he supports discrimination against blacks -- including because "they are the only race that has been enslaved for 300 years." The San Francisco-based newspaper's decision to publish the piece was a "mistake," said its editor-at-large Ted Fang. Fang spoke Wednsday at a news conference with NAACP leaders in San Francisco in which they discussed how the Asian and black communities "can be different and yet get along and work together." The paper won't publish any more of Eng's writing, Fang said. "The newspaper is sorry that this got published, and I am personally sorry that this got published," Fang told The Associated Press. "The views in that opinion piece do not in any way reflect the views of AsianWeek." Leaders at the Asian American Justice Center, Chinese for Affirmative Action, Coalition for Asian Pacific Americans and other groups began circulating a petition denouncing the column as "irresponsible journalism, blatantly racist, replete with stereotypes, and deeply hurtful to African Americans." The petition calls for AsianWeek to: -- Cut ties with Eng. -- Issue an apology. -- Print an editorial refuting the column. -- Fire or demote the editors who published it. AsianWeek, with a circulation of 48,505, issued a statement apologizing for "any harm or hurt this has caused the African American community." Fang said the paper plans to review its policies to "make sure it doesn't happen again."

I'm not at all surprised that so many Asian groups got together and denounced the author and his piece this strongly. The Asians I know are very good people.

AsianWeek's editor-at-large Ted Fang should be blamed and shunned as much or more than Kenneth Eng. Why did Fang allow the article to be published if it did not represent some perspective that AsianWeek is against disseminating? Perhaps AsianWeek was cool with publishing Eng's article because its editorial staff was fool enuff to think the article would not get back to Blacks and others who would be bothered by the sentiment conveyed in the article. But it's the Information Age. There are no more secret secular, ethnocentric viewpoints. You'd think (so-called 'smart') Asian Americans would know better. Or they momentarily had the stones to not-give-a-fuhk what we'd think...UNTIL they started to catch some HEAT from the sh*t. |

Amen Abm and Tonya. With a title like "Why I Hate Black People" what h**l did Fang expect? I applaud the groups that came together to condemn this hate speech. What got me was the number of BLACK people who were saying what Eng said was true while still being so ignorant as to lump all Asians together with "Koreans" Talk about self-hate. |

I agree this article was a shocker for me. Asians who I've dealt with personally and professionally have always seemed cool and, to me, didn't have a problem with Blacks overall. Maybe there were some they didn't care for on an individual basis, but they didn't seem to write-off the whole Black population. I remember talking to an Asian (Vietnamese) co-worker who said that her daughter was dating a Black guy and a White guy, and she hoped her daughter dumped the White guy and stuck with the Black guy because the Black guy "came from a good family." I think of all peoples throughout the world, Asians as a group are probably the most pragmatic.

The article was obviously written by an angry indignant Asian man who proceeded to engage in a little one-ups-manship, reminding blacks that "anything you can do, we can do better" and anything at which we are bad, you are worst. The writer never said he spoke for all Asians, he simply listed how they should combat black ridicule. To me his rant was an eye-opener. This guy may not have written what all Asians say, but he may have expressed what many Asians think. Orientals have a age-old tradition of being inscrutable when dealing with foreigners, masking their contempt with politeness. The writer of the article, albeit, was obviously an exception. Since blacks invariably resort to diversionary tactics when rebutting white criticism, a yellow man gave us as little taste of our own medicine. IMO |
