Bojangling for Bigots
An Open Letter to Jason Whitlock

(Note to Reader: Over the last decade, Jason Whitlock has been one of the most prominent African American sports columnists in the United States. He writes for the Kansas City Star and AOL Sports. For reasons unclear, he often refers to himself as "Big Sexy")
Dear Jason,
I start with long overdue thanks. Thanks for inspiring me to be a sportswriter. Thanks for showing all of us that the sports page could be more than blather and box scores. For that you have my sincere gratitude.
But the sad truth is that in recent months you've changed. You've been acting like the love child of Clarence Thomas and Haystacks Calhoun. It's time for an intervention. It's actually long overdue.
I didn't speak out when you called the great Scoop Jackson a "bojangling fake ghetto posturing clown." I didn't say anything when you wrote that there needed to be a "new civil rights movement" directed at "black idiots." I didn't type a word as week after week you provided African American cover for white sportswriters to rip Pro Basketball for being too "gangsta," too "violent," and too "hip hop" with all the subtlety of Strom Thurmond. Shame on me.
But your recent work on the NBA's All Star weekend in Vegas is just beyond the pale. When you have the unholy arrogance to compare your crusade against "ghetto acting" black people to the actions of Rosa Parks, when you call young African American kids "the Black KKK", and when you liken walking the Vegas strip to being in "the yard at a maximum security prison", it's simply time to say, "enough."
In your own words, "Instead of wearing white robes and white hoods, the new KKK has now taken to wearing white Ts and calling themselves gangsta rappers, gangbangers and posse members. Just like the White KKK of the 1940s and '50s, we fear them, keep our eyes lowered, shut our mouths and pray they don't bother us."
Please, please, please take a moment to listen to yourself. The Klan at its peak had 4.5 million members. They organized campaigns of lynching and terror to keep people of color from voting, holding jobs, or even existing in peace. To compare an NBA player's entourage with this bloody nightmare makes you sound scared, small, and simple.
But we're all aware you are anything but simple. You know there are far more fights in hockey and football than basketball with nowhere near the hysteria. You know there are more brawls at NASCAR events than at Madison Square Garden. You must realize that there is zero proof the friends and family of NBA players are any more violent than anyone else. But you bleat redundantly for "a new civil rights movement" to drive them out.
You actually write, "This must be the way Rosa Parks felt on that bus. She was just tired of eating white racist (spit). I'm tired of eating black racist (spit)."
Wow. You, Jason Whitlock. The new Rosa Parks. I suppose it is Black History Month, the one time we hear a great deal about Ms. Parks and her contribution to building a better world. I don't quite recall her droning on about strip clubs and lap dances the way you do (maybe I just missed it). I don't remember her reveling in the excess that seems to define your personal life. I'm not positive but I don't think she ever referred to herself as "Big Sexy". I do know she cared more about fighting for the less fortunate than cozying up to power. Maybe she was just "bojangling."
Jason: it's time for you and your sports writing brethren, all hot and bothered over All Star Weekend, to take a long overdue reality check. You rail against the violence of NBA "posses" yet turn your back to the fact that this is one of the most violent nations on earth. This is a country that imprisons 2 million of its citizens. This is a nation that spends 1.7 billion dollars a day on the military. This is the country that started an unnecessary war in Iraq that's killed hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and more than 3,000 troops. Surely a fan of Rosa Parks like yourself is familiar with the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who said, "I knew that I could never again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed in the ghettos without having first spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today -- my own government."
As you heroically churn out columns in between trips to the local gentleman's club, a very real world beats with injustice. Black unemployment is three times that of whites. Unemployment today for young Black men aged sixteen to nineteen tops out at more than 30 percent, double that of young whites. And the latest Bush budget will mean all of this will get worse.
By devoting your column to the amplification of the worst racial stereotypes, you actually divert attention from the real issues Black America faces. In this post-Katrina world, it should be all too clear that the problem is institutionalized racism and poverty, not a kid in baggy jeans.
And I'm sorry Jason, but one last comment on comparing yourself to Rosa Parks. Rosa stood up to the Klan, the Southern Police, and three centuries of violence and hate. Rosa risked her life. You are making bank by "bojangling" for bigots.
There is certainly a new civil rights movement to be built. But it won't be based on the sanctimonious spew you're selling. Instead, it will need to involve the very people you shower with scorn.

Another diversionary "rebuttal". Another attempt to defuse one problem by citing other ones while attempting to discredit the critic of the original problem. Obviously there are different points of view about the damage and danger of the white shirt brigade and Jason is entitled to lament it just as much David is entitled to rationalize it with the same ol cliched argument. Guess if some black folks had their way, they would establish an 11th Commandment: "One black shouldst not publicly criticize other blacks unless of course you are a black who publicly criticizes another black who says something you'd rather not hear about." |

I thought that name sounded white and that this was a well-meaning white liberal full of guilt, a sports groupie who hangs with the brothas, trying to keep it real. And in the year 2007, it is not importune to liken the white shirt brigade of renegades who are responsbile for so much demoralizing destruction in the black community to the Klan of almost 100 years ago. If he thinks Tupac and Biggie weren't lynched then he needs to go back to his blog and think again. |

Who the hell is in denial about America being one of the most violent nations on earth? It's so juvenile to think that this makes it OK for blacks or any other group in this country to engage in "intra-mural" violence, especially since it's self-destructive and counterproductive. Okay but who made you the moral guardians of low-class Black ppl Ntfs and Cynique. Just because you have a college degree you think you can sit around and "shake your finger" at Black ppl. But when you White counterparts commit some kind of crime you stragely remain silent.
Have you ever heard the saying "Live and let Live". God like the Bible says: Who here is above reproach?
You know that attitude is the eiptome of what I hate about the Black middle class. Take for instance Bill Cosby. He blasted "Low-class" Black ppl for sexual immorality. However, the very next week he is accused by not one, or two but three white women for drugging and raping them. He blast Black ppl for the parenting skills or lack thereof. However, he wasn't the best father in the world either. And he and his son Ennis couldn't stand eachother in fact they hadn't spoke in years before his death. He encouraged Black ppl about not wanting descent educations. However, he barely finished High School himself.
That seems to be the Black middle class excuse. No matter how immoral they are it is excusable because they have a college degree, make a certain amount of money, or drive a nice car. And they look the other way when their white counterparts/friend commit any kind of lewds acts because Hey their White!!
But if a low-class get a little loud in a public place then OH HELL NO!!! How dare they embarrass me in front of the WHITE Folks!!!

I'm somewhat ambivalent about what I think of Whitlock's views regarding the NBA All Star Game.
Although I might agree with him that there's been a precipitous DROP in the level of decorum amongst African Americans I'd also argue that what he describe is NOT unique to Black youth (e.g., the ascendancy of the very WHITE Girl Gone Wild phenomenon). And I'm not sure if what occurs in "What happens in Vegas STAYS in Vegas" is endemic of how all young Black foks are inclined to behave.
However, I have read many Jason Whitlock's columns over the years and I have seen him make many appearances on ESPN programming. And I've actually found him to be quite willing to confront the White supremacy as it manifest in sports.
Whitlock was amongst the most vocal sport writers to declare that the press should cut the sh*t regarding whether or not Barry Bonds used steriods to break homerun records and has argued that all of the team owners, sports media and fans WILLINGLY turned a blind eye to all the apparent power and performance enhancing doping that has occurred over the last 20 years.
In fact, I think Whitlock has been so contrary to and confrontational toward some of his White peers, he's been shunned from participating in certain media gigs. He was dumped from appearing on ESPN's immensely popular The Sports Reporters because he got into an onair beef with WHITE Mike Lupica and Mitch Albom about Bonds.
So I must say I'm quite suprise by what he's being accused of "Bojangling". |

I don't have a college degree and I am not judgmental about people "ballin" and having a good time, no matter what "class" they belong to. I do have a problem with people fighin and shootin each other up and I really have a problem with dim bulbs like you and chrishayden who think that if you ignore black-on-black violence, that'll it will go away - just vanish into whiteness. |

My daughter was in Vegas at the events and she couldnt believe it when I told her..then sent her the article to read for herself. She said she had fun all weekend and didnt see any fighting shooting or bad behavior.

My daughter and a group of her friends were there in Las Vegas, too, Li-Li! And she said she didn't see any violence either but they weren't hangin out with the ballers because they didn't want to get caught up in anything. Anyhow, Jason apparently had his reasons for writing what he did. One thing my daughter did comment on was how all the black girls had weaves and alllll the black guys had white girls! So let chris & Co defend this lifestyle. Who cares? |

I do NOT have a problem with a Black women doning different hair styles, even those that require perms and weaves. It's there ALWAYS, OBSESSIVELY and EXPENSIVELY effecting these styles that's the issue.
When you sometimes straighten/perm/weave, you're just styling. But when you ALWAYS straighten/perm/weave, you've surrendered to the notion that there's a facet of non-Black beauty that is superior to those of your own.
And Black men are almost as much to blame for the Black women obsessively perming/weaving as sistas themselves are. We men who REQUIRE our women to ALWAYS don straighten hair ARE indeed exhibiting an indirect form of self-hated. Only we're too self-ignorant to know it.
Wonder what most of us brothas would think and feel if sistas preferred that we all permed/weaved our hair so it looked like that of Brad Pitt and John Stamos. |
