BLACK ATHLETE SPORTS NETWORK published on Feb 3, 2007 BREAKING NEWS: BLACK COACHES ASSOCIATION MAY SUE NCAA BLACK COACHES ASSOCIATION On the cusp of SuperBowl 41 inspired by the Success of Black Coaches in the NFL ( to a limited extent ) The Black Coaches Association is talking TOUGH about NCAA's lack of progress in the college ranks As reported in USAToday Friday we may be approaching an historic lawsuit utilizing the Civil Rights Act of 1964 "which prohibits intentional employment discrimination and practices that have the effect of discriminating on the basis of race, religion, sex or national origin." If true it's about time Racism in hiring in college athletic departments in general and for coaching positions specifically is Blatant and as unwavering as ever. Colleges that receive massive financial aide of all sorts from government federal, state and local and which run their sports programs as not-for-profit organization avoiding all taxes while collecting millions from sponsors, fans and alumni. To make the point among 119 NCAA Division I football teams there are 7 "minority" head coaches last season while among 32 NFL teams last season there were 7 Black head coaches. There are almost 4 times as many Division I teams and the same amount of Black coaches as in the NFL. And Division I is doing "better" (sic) than either Division II or Division III. Even though the 2 Bushes and Reagan have packed the Federal Courts with individuals who have contempt for basic rights and the protection of law the Courts are the ONLY way the issue is likely to be addressed. The NCAA and its Hypocrite President Myles Brand have made it abundantly clear they are going to do NOTHING. They scoff at the idea of instituting a rule like the Rooney Rule in the NFL which requires NFL team to at least interview "minority" candidates for coaching positions. Here is NCAA President Myles Brand's response to that idea "the NCAA shouldn't infringe on institutional autonomy." Basically the same answer the President of the Confederacy Jefferson Davis back in the 1860s would have said to a question about ending slavery in the South "we shouldn't infringe on institutional autonomy." Institutional autonomy ! Now if we even need to tell you The idea of the NCAA using a statement like "the NCAA shouldn't infringe on institutional autonomy " is a Joke. The NCAA rigidly controls virtually every other aspect of sports in NCAA colleges. It has voluminous rules and regulations and its own large enforcement gestapo that travels the country and knows no limits in investigating college students it contends have broken the "rules." Now finally in the face of the absolute intransigence of the NCAA and hundreds of colleges refusing to end discrimination in their athletic programs finally finally finally the Black Coaches Association is talking law suit. Here is what BCA executive director Floyd Keith said this week about the situation at the NCAA "If presidents and athletic directors aren't taking note of this, then we've got an even greater problem than we think we do." Not exactly a statement to make the NCAA quake in their expensive boots but better than nothing. And Keith did also utter the magic words LAW suit. There appears to be a faint groundswell developing for a Federal law suit and we are adding our voices to it here at BASN. If the Black Coaches Association can put together a high quality legal team there is some potential here despite the right wing college loving judiciary. Because the abuse of African Americans is so Blatant. So as you watch SuperBowl 41 with Tony Dungy and Lovi Smith facing each other across the Gridiron think about the Abysmal situation and Racism rampant in the NCAA unless something is done it will be 100 or more years if ever before 2 African American head coaches face off in college football's Championship Game think about it Sunday and every day |

How's about all those great collegiate basketball and football players enroll at HBCU and make the kinds of loot for them their making for ACC, SEC, Big Ten, Big Twelve, Big East, etc.? Oh, I forgot. That would mean nikkas would have to be capable of believing enuff in each other and themselves to TAKE their rightful share. My bad. |

no abm that's where your wrong, hbc don't have the old boy's network in their favor. you know just as well as i do reggie bush wasn't or isn't the only player who's family all of a sudden got a nice house, hgih paying job, cars, etc as soon as their kid goes to makeusmoney university. so if a poor young black male can go to ucla and get the hook up or go to grambling and get a uniform, then that kid is going to do what he's gotta do. not to mention even if hbc did have the money to do the underhanded stuff, that is when the ncaa would swoop down on them so hard, that other hbc's wouldn't even be on their schedule. |

Dobes, The "old boy's network" don't happen overnight, out the ether. It's the product of foks investing, risking, sacrificing, fighting, stealing and even in some cases dying over who will/won't be in power. Look. Either Black foks are going to make a grab at REAL power on this globe. Or we're going to have to continue to cowtow for scrapes at massah's rickety servant's dining table. |

yeah that may be true but it is almost unrealistic to expect a kid barely getting out of highschool to carry a whole race on his back. when most of the pros are in their late 20's half of them still don't consider the reach back theory. |

Dobes, Yeah. Especially when he's from a fractured family and community can can't/won't instill within him any sense of responsibility beyond that of himself, his future Jewish agent and his inevitable blond White wife. |

Dobes, Honestly, bruh. I think one of the veyr BEST things that could happen to African Americans would be for us to LOSE our dominance in sports and entertainment. |

perhaps, but then what would be our media outlet? with the exception of 3rd world countries, television is strong no matter what you do. blacks still aren't dominate in those venues either if you think about it. their are zero black owners in football, 2 in basketabll, none for baseball, and of course you no the dealio with hockey and nascar. when it comes to entertainemnt it's the same thing ... so technically blacks are just soldiers who come and go, but the generals stay the same. |

it goes with out saying, the lack of unity and selfishness amongst those whose have superior physical and creative ablity really need to work on the reach back theory. |

Dobes, Obviously, I agree Whites dominate us in the OWNERSHIP of sports. Of course, that's easier for them to do when they get to strategize about how to own/control sh*t while we pride ourselves in being able to stylishly run and jump around like overgrown children. |

abm lol, do you think that's the weakness in black sports and entertainment? being physically gifted isn't the problem. you have to agree that if it where up to owners to have a white athletes who could be as physically gifted that they would snatch them up in a heart beat. when the white athletes are phenomenal i know you notice how they can't talk enough about them, hell even when they are marginal like jason seahorn from the giants was, they over hype them, because they are always looking for the next great white hope. the black dollar has just as much power as the white dollar, but it's all about ownership. when the right black people have access to the black dollar then things would change. i think we should pride ourselves on entertainment and athletic based accomplishments, but to put so much of a focus on it is setting a bare minumim. |

Dobes, I'm not sure I wholly agree that White prefer to have all their jocks be White. I mean, I guess to some degree they still want they Great White Hope. But consider this, if being White was of primary import, Whiter pro sports like Tennis and Hockey would be much more popular than they are. Hell. The White Tennis and Golf have greatly BENEFITED from the infusion of color Tiger Woods, Serena and Venus Williams and Michelle Wie have provided. I think the savvy White owners of pro sports discovered that Blacks tend to add a flair and panache to their performances that great White jocks/entertainers seldom are capable of pulling off. And our colorful performances translate into DOLLARS. And to the issue of ownership: At some point, Black foks, no matter the endeavor, must develop the cajones to fight for more ownership/dominion of the talents and resources. And that's NOT just here in the US. Africa needs to learn that lesson even MORE so than African Americans. Because unlike Black foks here, Africans are in much more of a position to much more directly control their governments, schools, healtcare, etc. |
