Shouldn't Thandie Newton play Lena Horne when she dies? Thandie looks like a very young Lena Horne to me. If not who should play her?? |

Does Thandie look White-enuff to portray Lena? I'm not sure. Maybe Angelina Jolie would be a more realistic choice. FTFO!!! |

Damn, Serenasailor, why would you come up with Thadie Newton, an English actress whose father is an African from Kenya and whose mother is white, to play an black American legend like Lena Horne? Thadie's like a female version of Barak. snicker. I don't even think she and Lena look alike. Janet Jackson entertained the idea of playing this role, but Lena balked after Janet had that wardrobe mishap at the super bowl. Beyonce could maybe play her if she went on the same crash diet she did to lose all that weight for Dream Girls. Lena was very svelte and come to think of it, Beyonce's singing voice is very reminiscent of Lena's. |

Wrong Cynique Thandie's mother is African from Zimbabwe and her father is White/British Officer. I think she would be a wonderful one to play Lena. |

I stand corrected about the specifics of Thadie's heritage, Serensailor, but she is still mixed and foreign-born and the epitome of what you are always bitching about. I still don't see her as Lena. She doesn't project a compelling presence like Lena. |

Just because Thadie and Lena are both gorgeous doesn't mean they look alike. Thadie has a baby face and a tentative persona. Lena's face is seductively contoured and as a singer, she had an electrifying presence. |

Lena Horne is not mixed, Serenasailor. Both of her parents were black and she came from a very prominent black family who could trace their roots way back, but they fell on hard times which is why Lena had to go into show biz at an early age in order to become the breadwinner. |

Lena Horne is a mixed woman. Just because Negrosoids like you want to claim everybody as "Black" doesn't mean I have too. Lena Horne is only Black because Negroes like you choose to live "up under" that stupid "One Drop Rule". And just like Thandie Newton, Lena Horne only dealt exclusively with White men. She also did not like being called "Black" just like Thandie Newton. So the similiarities are "uncanny". CHE-NA-NA!!! |

Toni Braxton, maybe? I don't know what Toni looks like today but I think they should go for an Upper class (looking) Black actress because Lena Horn was at least culturally Black and she represents Black history - not multiracial history or any other else. |

She also did not like being called "Black" I admit to not knowing a lot about Horne. But I recently saw the doc about Billy Strayhorn and the picture of her that emerged from that was definitely not one of a woman who denied her Blackness. |

Lena Horne's first marriage was to a black man; she also had a torrid affair with heavyweight champion Joe Louis as well as Duke Ellington and, as Yvette alluded to, considered Ellington's musical arranger Billy Strayhorn, who was black and gay, as her soul mate. And having been subjected to racial discrimination all during her career, she became active in the civils rights movment during the 50s joining with other black celebrities to support and march with Martin Luther King. A history of the Horne family written by Lena's daugther Gail, says that their family was very much a product of the black middle class caste system, but they never considered themselves anything other than "black." |

You sound like you are confusing Lena Horne with Eartha Kitt, Serenasailor. Eartha never embraced her blackness and always consorted with white men, and tried to pass herself off as "mixed" and always wanted to be thought of as a "raceless" entertainer. She also had a pugnacious little "cute" face like Thadie Newton. |

Toni Braxton is more in the vein of Lena as a singer, Tonya, but - well, she kinda looks like a turtle in the face. Lena's face has more classical lines. |

Lena Hornes first marriage was to an old white director(Sidney Lumet). He directed the "Wizard of Oz". They eloped. Not only that Lena Horne had all of her children by white men. Her last husband was to a Black man. |

You are confused, Serensailor. Lena's daugher Gail married Sidney Lumet. Lena's second husband was white Lenny Hayton who was her musical director. Her first marriage was to a black man named Louis Jordan Jones and he is who her 2 children Gail and Teddy were by. |

Wrong Tonya. There is no such thing as "Culturally Black". The only way you can be "Culturally Black" is if you are "Genetically Black". Black blood makes you "Black". And in all fairness "lets be real" Lena had just as much White/Indian blood in her as she did Black. |

You can only express an opinon on the issue of being "culturally black", Serenasilor because nobody has appointed you as, or voted you in to the position of the arbitrator who determines who is and who isn't black. You cannot speak for millions of slave descendants on this subject. |

Lena Horne is BEAUTIFUL....one of the most beautiful, feminine women I've ever seen. Something about her just exudes class and grace. I don't think Bey could pull it off. They don't look alike nor are they built the same. Thandi would be a better choice but she doesn't look like her either...but the magic of makeup in Hollyweird could surprise us. |

If it's all a matter of make-up then why not go with Janet Jackson? Anybody chosen for this role should at least be someone who is a singer and dancer. Thadie Newton ain't nobody but a milk-faced actress of average talent who's probably very unfamiliar with Lena Horne. |

I had the pleasure of meeting Lena Horne on the east side of Manhattan, while she was walking in the east 70's. She remains the most gracious, down-to-earth, approachable celebrity I've ever encountered. Not to mention that she's even more drop-dead gorgeous in person... |

I always had a problem with Lena's acquiline nose also, and her smile seemed kinda false but I wouldn't discount that she looked better in person. Minor points, I guess, since her main appeal was the sexy way she could put a song across. |

SS, interesting, never looked at it that way. I agree that she's not genetically Black. But it’s possible for people to take on a culture that isn't their own. In fact, I saw it done many times before, flawlessly. Which is exactly why I don't robotically equate cultural Blackness with being Black; it's so easy for people to adopt another culture. |

There is no such thing as race, so to call someone black means what exactly? If we are talking about color then few people are actually "black." Too, if we are talkin about blood, then again, few socalled African Americans are 'black.' Just because you can not see it doesn't mean that it aint there.... culture is something that is learned, it is not genetic, serenasailor. If that was the case, Africans would embrace socalled black Americans as Africans... |

Brownbeauty123: Good question, now I know why you started the other thread. I'm quite familiar with what you call the "real" world. There is the human race. But no, there is no black or white or yellow race. There is racism but no race. And finally, on my usage of 'black,' I use it because it is more or less assessible for the majority of you. In the "real" world, that is the imagined world, its less about 'truth' and more about being understood and getting what you need for basic survival. Ever seen the Matrix?

Sereanasailor, all you have to do is google Sidney Lumet to find out the facts. What follows is an excerpt from his biogrpahy: "Lumet is the former son-in-law of Lena Horne; was married to her daughter, the journalist and author Gail Lumet Buckley nee Gail Jones". I was not speculating about this because I KNOW Lumet was never married to Lena Horne. But since you are reluctant to take my word, I suggest you research it yourself. Lena Horne is almost 90 years old and was not married to Lumet. Her second husbandwas Lenny Heyton who was white. I repeat her first husband was black and the father her 2 children.
