Black Leader Says Abortion Continues to Diminish African-Americans "Abortion has become the number one killer of black people in this country -- killing more African Americans that accidents, heart disease, stroke, crimes, HIV-AIDS and all other deaths combined," [Gardner] explained. by Steven Ertelt LifeNews.com Editor February 7, 2007 Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A leading pro-life advocate in the black community says abortion diminishes the worth and value of African-Americans in the same way slavery and a lack of civil rights did before. Day Gardner, president of the National Black Pro-Life Union, hopes Americans will learn more about this travesty during Black History Month. "Throughout the month of February, we take the time ... one month out of the year to remember the tragedies and celebrate the triumphs of African Americans in history," Gardner explained. "We celebrate the fact that we are a strong race that survived the many horrors and inhumane treatment when we were an enslaved people -- presumed by many to be less than human," she said in a statement provided to LifeNews.com. Gardner, a former Miss Delaware and the first black woman to be named a semifinalist in the Miss America pageant, said that black Americans made great strides in the 1960s and afterwards in achieving civil rights and establishing their ability to achieve the American dream. Since that time, African-American people have been able to rise to the highest ranks in the political and business worlds and achieve tremendous success. But Gardner worries that abortion is taking a heavy toll on her community. "In our quest for higher education, bigger houses, better jobs and flashier cars are we closing our eyes to the fact that more than a thousand of our children die each day by the horrible practice of abortion?" she asked. "These children are denied their most basic human right -- which is the right to life; a right which our ancestors so proudly worked for, marched for and many of them died for," Gardner added. Gardner said that 15 million of the 44 million unborn children killed via abortion since 1973 were black. "Abortion has become the number one killer of black people in this country -- killing more African Americans that accidents, heart disease, stroke, crimes, HIV-AIDS and all other deaths combined," she explained. Gardner says she's bothered that African-American leaders recognize racism in many places but fail to see how abortion has targeted the black community and how a disproportionate number of the abortions done in the United States are on black women and children. More than 37 percent of all abortions involve black Americans, she says. Gardner concludes, "We are the underground railroad of our time and it's up to us to make abortion a thing of our historical past. If we stand united against this horrific practice ... we shall overcome this, too." Copyright © 2003-2006 LifeNews.com. All rights reserved. It seems to me a very PERSUASIVE argument can be made that being denied the right to be BORN is the most egregious of all abrogations of one's Civil and Human Rights. |

I take everything this Pro-Life underground railroad spouts with a grain of salt especially when they resort to sophistry in stating their case. They are very manipulative in their language, personifying numbers and creating psuedo scenarios, all in an effort to advance an political\religious agenda that intrudes into the private lives of females, seeking to impose a moot belief that the rights of the unborn take precedence over the rights of the living. Black folks have more important things to worry about than whether or not black "women and girls" should be having more babies. And I'm sure DCFS would agree. |

The problem with the 15 million abortions that doesn't seem to be taken into consideration is that what is also missing are the offsprings that these missing people (the aborted ones) did not/will not produce. So we have countless millions of Black people who are nonexistent because countless millions of Black women found it "inconvenient" to bear a child (and I realize there are other reasons why women choose abortions but that seems to be the predominant one). The impact of all of this will never be known, but it's a contributing factor to why Blacks will continue to be the "minority" in the U.S.A.

Well it may have all balanced out if we take into consideration how it would be if all of the white abortions hadn't occurred. |

Anyone can make a seemingly convincing argument, pro or con, for abortion by blacks (or anyone else). It's an individual choice and decision. I'm very leery of government intrusion into personal decisions and lifestyles. The argument (the black pro-life advocates) is suspect and weak to me.

Okay, but this isn't about individual choice. This is about the negative impact that abortions have had upon the Black population in the U.S.A. as a whole. |

Now you know I have to ask this question, Mzuri. What negative impact does abortion have on the black community? Is it worse than the black-on-black crime perpetrated by the gangs comprised of young black kids from fatherless homes? And are we going to start lamenting the use of birth control pills and shots because they are preventing more black babies from being born? |

Well, Ms. Cynique, I have already stated my thoughts on the negative impact (and you already know what I think about it anyway so I don't know why you're asking the obvious) - we continue to be the minority. And although I am not a sociologist, my thinking is that if there were more of us (Black people), maybe perhaps we could be running things, and then that way we wouldn't have all the problems that are happening in the community now (lack of jobs, poverty, crime, etc.). Look at the Mexicans - as a whole they don't practice birth control or abortions (because they tend to be Roman Catholics and it goes against the church to practice BC) and they continue to proliferate at a rapid rate and that's why they are taking over and running things. Things that we could have been running already - if millions of us weren't unborn.

Well all the anti-abortionist white conservatives and Evangelicals will provide enough white people to maintain control; And Mexicans may increase their numbers but they will not wield much power. |

Chris: "One minute we are being overrun with OOW births...The next we are killing ourselves with abortions." There is a happy medium between those 2: Foks competently and consistently utilizing birth control AND then waiting until AFTER they marry to to birth/raise children. |

As many advocates have suggested, legalizing drugs and prostitution would de-criminalize them just as legalizing abortions did away with back alley butchers. The fact of the matter is is that abortion is legal and it became so because the Supreme Court ruled that women have the right to control their bodies without interference from self-styled moralists. |

"Negroes are insane." Hmmmmmmm.....yeah. That's sounds about right. "One minute we are being overrun with OOW births." Yep! And I don't think it will subside any time soon. OOW seems to be a trendy, fashionable, socially acceptable and innocuous cultural phenomena for American blacks. No biggee......black folks are just doing they thang! "next we are killing ourselves with abortions." Not hardly. Don't believe the hype. There is no shortage of Negroes. Where are you living Chris? Iceland? "ow it ain't happening in my town." Of course not! We know that. You live in St.Louis -right? Nawwwwww.....never happen there.

"The fact of the matter is is that abortion is legal and it became so because the Supreme Court ruled that women have the right to control their bodies without interference from self-styled moralists." I agree. But it really doesn't matter because there is a factious cabal of fierce moralists and rabid nanny-ologists who feel they know what is morally better for women to do. And they are organizing with ever increasing momentum to legally remove the right of a woman to make a decision about herself. Their shrill rhetoric and pro-life hysterical propaganda runs the gambit from racial genocide conspiracies to religious fanaticism. I once worked with a guy that was part of the pro-life religious far right. This guy was completely intolerant and openly hostile to any views or commentary that did not reflect his pro-life advocacy. He and his wife were members of that group that pickets abortion clinics and physically accosts and attempts to prevent women from entering the clinic. He was very proud and brazen about these tactics. There are plenty more out there exactly like him and they do not take kindly to women making personal decisions about their bodies. |

Ntfs, It's interesting how pro-lifers and pro-choicers villify each other so when the TRUTH of the matter is there are some painfully VALID arguments along BOTH sides of the issue of abortion. |

ABM: ""Then you would agree with me that Prostitution and Recreational Drug Use should - like the "individual choice" of Abortion - be LEGAL?" Ntfs: Yes." Yet. Isn't it interestingly contradictory how some forms of free choice is legal (Abortion & Recreational Alcohol Consumption) while others (Prostitution & Recreation Drug Consumption) are not. |
