Do you suffer from Razor Bumps? I don't personally but, I heard alot of Black men can not shave with a regular razor. If so what do you do for them? Have you heard of Magic Shave? Let me know!!! |

No. But I wear a beard mostly now, anyway. I have had some friends who suffered from them so bad they had to use Magic Shave. The old kind used to stink to high heaven. I understand now they have some that don't. |

"Do you suffer from Razor Bumps? I don't personally but, I heard alot of Black men can not shave with a regular razor. If so what do you do for them? Have you heard of Magic Shave?" The curse of razor bumps, unfortunately, is very common for black men, especially young black men who have not developed a shaving system. I used Magic Shave all my life up until 1997 when I was in an accident in Thailand. I was in the hospital for about a week and had no access to MS. I panicked. I received a little toiletry kit that had a razor in it. One day, I just couldn't take the hair growing on my face any longer and I broke down, took the razor, used soap and water and shaved. I waited for the dreaded razor bumps. It didn't happen. I was pleasantly shocked. I have been shaving daily with triple edge blades and gel ever since. I never felt so free in my life after that incident. Using the MS was a curse. The cause of pseudofolliculitis barbae (razor bumps) is the hair emerging from the curved follicle, which grows almost parallel to the skin surface (instead of away from the skin), and then curves inward. The inward-curving hair punctures the skin, causing an inflammatory reaction, irritation, and bumps on the cheeks, chin, jawline, neck and sub-mental (the area under the chin). Infection from the hairs curling back into the skin can also cause dark marks on the face and neck area over time. I've seen many brothers who have had some very bad cases of PB. In fact, when I was in the military, it was common for blacks to get no shaving chits from medical for specified periods of time to address this problem. I have also seen instances where brothers were allowed to grow beards because of their medical aversion to shaving. But the PB is the curse of the black man. No doubt. It seems to affect mostly younger brothers, who as I said, have not developed an effective shaving system yet. I recommend the triple and new quadruple shaving blades (very expensive!), shaving gel, skin moisturizers and dermatological cream for infections.

magic shave smells like a fart! black dudes get shaving profiles in the army because half of the brothers can't shave without getting bumps, keloids, and calluses. i also seen a white dude use magic shave because he was buying those expensive ass mach3's ... and that experiment didn't turn out so well for him. i use expensive ass mach3's on everything from my neck up except for my eyebrows and eye lashes and don't get a single bump... because i am the shizzle and use gels only. |

I used to use Magic Shave But now I just wear a beard. Though it makes me look older, my wife likes it because she think it makes me look professorial and more distinguished. Dobes: They now have scented Magic Shave products that do NOT smell like somebody's cutting the cheese. As Ntfs said, razor bumps are the product of hair curling under the skin. The kinkier ones natural hair it, the more likely it will curl under the skin. Keep the edges of your razor as sharp as you can safely use them. Because doing that increases the chances of your being able to shave your beard while avoiding the pulling of your facial hair which can both irritate the skin and increase the chances of the hair curling under the skin. And to shave smoothly, you must use products and facial treatments that help keep the surface of your face as smooth and healthy as possible. Because that also increases the chances of your being able to shave sans irritating the skin in was that cause razor bumps. |

One of my men used Magic Shave and I don't think it's the Magic Shave that stank, it is the dissolved hair that gives off that slightly offensive smell. Anyway, I'm a shaver of my armpits and legs - at least twice a day because I can't stand my legs when they're not smooth - and I recently started using the Gillette triple blades - I love it!!! Four blades is a bit much and I definitely won't use twin blades again. These multi-blades aren't so expensive when you buy the disposables.

I've seen women , young ones with razor bumps kinda scary. I had razor bumps and the associated irrated skin. I use the Mach 3 blades, shaving cream, a pre shave gel and a boars hair brush. I also changed my shaving technique. Shaving with the grain first, lathering again and then shaving against the against the grain It took a while to reclaim my skin but I don't get bunps and my skin is smoooth after a shave. My biggest probem was spending 20 years shaving improperly, pressing too hard and trying to stretch the life of blades -- dull blades will kill you. I swear by the shaving brush too.

"Where the heck did you see some women with razor bumps - in prison???" You don't have to be in prison to see razor bumps on a woman. Although it's not common, I have seen a number of black women with razor bumps before. Most are over forty because of hormonal changes. But I have seen it.

"My biggest probem was spending 20 years shaving improperly, pressing too hard and trying to stretch the life of blades -- dull blades will kill you. I swear by the shaving brush too." So true! It's all about the blades and the method of direction of the blade when shaving the face. You need fresh sharp blades to do the job. I have noticed this also. After a while, your face has a slight irritation because of using dull blades. They don't get the job done. The new quad blades would be ideal if not for their prohibitive price. As I said, I use Edge gel and triple edge blades. I'd love to try those quads though.

"Granted I hope the anamousity between us is over! But COME ON!!" Not trying to pick a fight or hatin', just curious. That's all. If you recall, the possibility was brought up before and not by me! And if you have noticed, I'm not the only one that is now curious. As I said, the thought never crossed my mind until someone else (in fact, it was more than one person) brought the possibility up. You can lay all the speculation to rest for good right here. Ball in your court.......

Yvettep: In the past, when Thumper's Corner was more intellectually engaging, we used to have these discussions on gender identity and gender roles. I often questioned the veracity of accepted gender roles, as well as sided with many of the women on certain issues, and consequently, it was believed that I was a woman [as well as the belief, I suspect, that Yukio was a woman's name...when in fact it is a man's name]. Of course, this is my version; the other ol' heads, [I think I'm part of the second generation of posters...not the first generation] if they choose, can inform you of their own version.

Yvettep, For some reason, for a year or more Yukio either pretended to be or allowed the rest of us to think he was a woman. Then, out of the blue, he tried to (right cavalierly, actually) slide "Oh. I'm a guy. Yawl didn't know?" by us. Of course, I HAD to give him the business for it. Which, rare for him, he got royally PISSED about. Now, nikka will CLAIM he'd done nothing that warranted our assuming he was a girl and that we'd merely assumed such because of his politics (and the sound of his name). But ANYONE who'd observed our discourse over that time, ESPECIALLY my frequent flirting with him (*HURL* *GAG* *BARF*), would CLEARLY divine that we all thought he was a chick. Ask Kola what she thought about Yukio's shem antics. Yukio, ~I know all there is to know, about the Crying Game...~ |

Yvettep: Actually, ABM's version is a bit inaccurate. Cynique, in fact, asked my sex, after I said something that suggested that I wasn't a woman! LOL! This is why I said others should tell their version. Actually, that "nikka" ABM was more interested in flirtin with me and others than my comments [he of course was not the only one]...it demonstrated, as I argued then as well as before I was "outted," the tendency for men to avoid the ideas of women, that is the intellect, and to view them as objects of desire... And in fact, they did think I was a woman, and I never corrected them. For what? And they never asked! I did not, however, partake in any "shem antics"...what miffed ABM and others was that their own imaginations got the best of them...LOL! Unlike the present, my posts were completely stripped or bereft of any kind of personality...my posts were purely 'cerebral.' |

Abm: LOL! IF you say so, elder. I was complicit, I suspect, by my silence, but I didn't initiate anything! Yvettep: yeah, i think its fun to see how people attach their own notions of sexual roles, etc...on to statements, that is what we state in posts, etc... Here is one of the few cases, when I MAY have been participated in some "shem antics": Yukio: Ya'll need to get a room...lol! P: Only if you join us, Yukio. And please bring a warm bottle of merlot with you. V.Yeah, Yukio. Bring the Merlot and leave your pannies at home. LOL Ssssss just kidding, girl. Don't have a hissy fit. {P} wouldn't do noth'n to us. I'm just teasing him cause he's sexy. Yukio:Hmmmmmm....I prefer chardonnay... -------------------------------------------- Now, this was actually more funny to me I'm sure than the others...notice, by the way, while I was certainly complicitious, no doubt, by my silence, I "flirted" with neither V nor P...LOL! But I would certainly call this deception! And years later, I am only slightly sorry for that; I do think that if my posts were examined for that year or so, it would be clear that: a) I partook mainly in cerebral exchanges. b) that many of the men on this board were so more engaged by the assumption that a woman could be cerebral. c) some woman, while engaging in an intellectual exchange, are sidetracked by men who solicit their socalled "feminine wilds." d) that while some women complain about being treated as objects, they often embrace it and envelope in it... e) and finally generally, men [including myself of course]here are male chauvinist and women here embrace this, perhaps because WE, as a society, have all been socialized to do so. ----------------------------------------- But anyways, it was interesting to say the least....and I didn't start off with a 'plan,' but this thing became to take a life of its own, as have our own AALBC personalities...LOL! At the time, I was trying to take what I was reading seriously, and I basically learned that cultural socialization [what we have been taught to believe for forever] and the emotive [emotions, love, passion, hate, etc...] will almost, always trump fact, socalled truth, and intellect....
