I don't really post here regularly but when I do I am always engrossed in what I read. I love debate and I have frequented quite a few african-american based websites in the past year.
I am a British born, mainly west indian desecnted person and I am very curious as to how african-americans view the caribbeans who come to the USA. When I used to post on a caribbean/latin website we had quite a few african-americans who seemed a bit, ahem, angry at caribbeans. I am not clued up on the reasons why and I have never got this impression on Thumper's.
I would like to know how some of you guys view Caribbeans (this could also include Puerto Rico and Cuba if you wish).
I have always liked certain aspects of african-american culture and when it comes to things like the civil rights movement, african-americans and caribbeans have great ties.
However, I am interested about the relationship on a 'grass roots' level. Feel free to vent lol 
Whenever I used to watch american television where caribbeans were depicted I always got the impression that you guys either thought we were;

I agree with Jackie that I learned to judge a person by the content of their character. I had a WONDERFUL friend living in Indiana who was from Trinidad who I miss as when I moved back to Ohio I lost touch with her. She made the BEST Curry chicken I have EVER eaten in my LIFE.

I was raised to judge people by color FIRST especially if the color was white. Though now that I've older I realize that white people aren't a bit more devilish than Blacks, Hispanics and all others. Anyway, as far as Caribbean Blacks are concerned, it never occurred to me that I should make a distinction. No matter where Blacks are on this planet, I think of us all as Brothers & Sisters, as one. |

latina_wi: hmmmm...as many people here know, i am african american, BUT I am from nyc, particularly Harlem and the S. Bronx. And, in my family and childhood and adult friendships people of the Spanish Caribbean, particularly Puerto Rico[really Nuyoricans] predominate, so I am biased...LOL! Thus, my experiences w/'Caribbeans' is all to the good--they comprise my friends and family!
My education at Medgar Evers College introduced me to folk of the British Caribbean in educational way. Although I had friends [from basketball] who were of Jamaican ancestry from childhood and adolescence(sp), at MEC I was introd. to 'W.Indian ' culture and the hereogeneity among them, particularly the conflicts between the large and small islands, and the oft hate directed at Haitians, for example...all of this I learned, watched, and experienced while at MEC...so here again, I got another education, mainly intellectual, cultural, and through love [thats another story].
So i'm quite biased, and my experiences are not typical, in fact. I know alot of NYers who have different experiences...and God has given me these experiences for a reason, I'm sure. I too have had similar experiences with Africans too, excluding the LOve part...but I'm workin on that...LOL! Hola!
Now, this doesn't mean that I havent encounted conflict among 'african americans' and 'caribbeans,' but I understand why there is beef, and while I don't like it, i understand and that helps be deal with it. My opinions, then, are influenced by my childhood in Spanish Harlem, Bklyn, and, of course, the S. Bronx, my family, the present, and alot of reading; I there fore have a competent appreciation of the very complicated history of people of Africa and people of African descent in the Americas.
so there is my short answer...LOL

Best way to judge people! But in a society like America where many have been treated in extremes due to their differeing races it doesn't happen.
