I was reading that article and I was wondering are Carribean Blacks that distinguishable from Black Americans? I've never been to the Carribean so I was wondering. PLEASE!! This is not a debate about "SKIN COLOR". I was just wondering!! When I say Carribean I mean Haitians, Bohamians, Jamaicans ETC?? |

Not to me. The facial structure is different. Caribbean Blacks tend to have higher foreheads and cheeckbones, more slanted eyes, their lips tend to be full but with narrow mouths, whereas American Blacks' lips tend to be full with wide mouths. |

Interesting!!! I thought most Jamicans were a very dark, African featured ppl. Now I know that most Haitians are very dark ppl. That because they are descendants of the Congo. |

Serena, they look EXACTLY like dark-skinned African Americans and, like some AA's, some of them resemble the ancestors that so many of us CLAIM to love.

Yup. So is Farrkhan. The skin tones, eye colors, hair textures, etc of West Indians are as diverse as those of Amer. Blacks. The thing I find that distinguishes the two groups of Blacks most is overall facial structure. That of West Indians tends to be more chiseled. I believe Powell is of Jamaican extraction. Farrakhan is Trinbagonian (Trinidad and Tobago); before joining the NOI he was a Calypso singer. Not sure about Belafonte. |

Well, they all look black to me. In fact, they look like the black folks I grew up with and went to school with in the Midwest. I'm not sure if you can completely generalize about this kind of thing. Too many variables.

before the slaves were brought to america, the slave ships stopped in the west indies. it was called the middle passage. the jamaicans and black americans are identical. the other west indian islands are inhabited by a part of our nation aswell. west indians and black americans are the SAME people. although it goes a bit deeper than this. the people of jamaica and the black americans are the same. there are slight physical differences in the appearence of some of the people of the west indies and the people of jamaica and the united states because our nation is like a "speckeled bird". our people can look many different ways. |

well being that the "black americans" and "west indian black" are the same NATION, how is it that the west indian blacks are "much better as a whole"? better in what way, are they better? and my great-great grandfather was a west indian man, born in the bahamas. i will say that in some cases west indian blacks have a "higher sense of self than" some black americans. but this is ONLY because the west indian blacks were less "cut-off" from their past than most of the american blacks were. but there is really no difference between the "black americans" and the "west indian blacks". if you really want to "go there", the black americans are the people who BUILT and layed the foundation for america. there are NO black people on the planet earth that are "better" than the black americans (although, its my belief that the jamaicans are the same people as the black americans). |

Farrakhan is Jamaican. Garcielle Beauveais is, and Wyclef Jean are Haitians. Colin Powell is Jamaican I think as well(I'm not sure). I think Trinidadians are the best looking of the group. |

Garcelle looks like your typical Haitian woman. Minus the really dark colored skinned. I think she was one of the most beautiful women in the industry. |

WOW at the stereotypes. You show one fukking pic and you think that's how all the people from the country look? The Caribbean is a mosaic of people, lots of genetic diversity. Let me let you in on a little secret: THEY DON'T ALL LOOK ALIKE!!! So if I show a pic of Dennis Rodman, that's how black American men would look?? Get the fukk outta here! |

"WOW at the stereotypes. You show one fukking pic and you think that's how all the people from the country look? The Caribbean is a mosaic of people, lots of............. that's how black American men would look?? Get the fukk outta here!" My sentiments exactly. But remember, these people are renown anthropologists and ethnologists with impressive academic credibility and extensive research back grounds. They believe they are qualified to present irrefutable physical evidence that all blacks can be easily geographically categorized, identified, divided and grouped according to their personal observations and beliefs. So don't hate...!!!!

Serenasailor, you're right. Most of the Haitian females I know and have seen throughout my life are drop-dead gorgeous and they do resemble Garcelle Beauvais, except they're almost always a few shades darker - milk chocolate - you’re absolutely right, and they usually have thinner noses.... ....(B*tches don’t hate - congratulate, lol! ) |

Yeah I agree with Fortified, us West Indians, just like you african americans are very diverse looking. There are differences in looks because certain african american and caribbeans descend from different african groups/tribe. In Baltimore you may even see the slight difference between the african americans who are born and bred there as they usually descend from the gullah, they are one of the purest group of africans outside africa! Believe it or not I can tell the difference between a Bajan and a St.Lucian (when pushed) also. I know loads of Trinis who look Tatyana Ali (incidentally, she is half Trini). However, Tonya I agree with you about the look of Haitians (though I know one white haitian and a few mixed ones), generally a very dark looking people, but Bahamians are usually very fair because they have a strong European influence. I think it may almost be majority white now (51% or summat silly). Also, my Mum is half Jamaican and I have been there loads and I have never really seen a Jamaican like the group you have shown there, rare time I have were the exceptions. The very dark Jamaicans usually have a more smooth and extremely dark colour - wish I could give you an example. Colin Powell is a Jamaican as is that Belfantonie (lol, cannot spell) actor guy who was very involved in civil rights. Malcolm X had a Grenadian mother. I cannot make a blanket statement on what all caribbean people look like because we are so varting. Even within my own family we vary! |
