Folks, we need to discuss this. I was stunned to learn this particular mindset is still prevalent. Where did we go wrong as a race? What can we do to reverse this thinking among our children (and adults alike)? It's hard core...very hard core. I'd like to see responses to something that was done more 50 years ago yet still exists. Why...????? http://www.komoradio.com/home/video/5001856.html?video=pop&t=a |

One thing we're doing wrong here in this forum is that we keep posting and discussing the same topics over and over again. Colorism. Hair Texture. Beyonce. How many times are we going to discuss "A Girl Like Me"

its not just colorism. a "brown" would have been an hispanic doll, and since we, humans, are so dumb, we still believe that a}there is a such thing as race b} that hispanic is a racial identity and c} blackness is bad and connotes criminality. The law that ruled this last were not based on color, it was based on the assumption that race was a biological difference, and based on these assumed differences we could account for the social status of different "races." |

These children LEARN this behavior from the media, from their own parents and other children...primarily from BLACK people. There is a correlation between the choices these children make and the choices we BLACK adults make. When we post and discuss issues on colorism, hair texture, beyonce, we are expressing our own unresolved anxieties about the very same issues. Do we think that because we have tits, balls, and berries we are exempt of feeling these raw feelings of self-hatred? Many of us ADULTS have not reconciled the COLOR TRAUMA experienced as children, and we pass this SICKNESS on to our babies. It starts with ourselves the teachers, and NOT these children. OK. So say, going forward, we post and discuss issues dealing with black children choosing white dolls, instead of Babyface, Eddie Murphy, Michael Jordan, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Whoopi Goldberg, etc. preferring THIER white "dolls" (mates) over BLACK, then what? Obviously 50 years of TALK has not gotten us very far as a race. Again, it starts with the ADULTS, not the children. |

Since the perennial problem of color has its roots in slavery, we have to ask ourselves if we would be better off if we had stayed in Africa. Slave descendents are still "strangers in a strange land", still seeking acceptance and, unfortunately, the color closest to that of the ex-slave masters is one yard stick by which acceptance is measured. Solutions offered in regard to resolving this problem are easier said than done. |

"but its not about the color white...its about the assumption that the white race is good, right, superior,etc..." that's the first step in finding a solution, but to a child and children in adult bodies it IS about the color white... the connotations of such take a backseat for those of us who are not actively conscious of the phenomenon. for the analyst, what you've deduced is obviously the case. Why don't we/ won't we descend our analytical pedestals and share the "good news?" And if we are, in fact, doing this, how effective are we or do we want to be?

The only way black society will "get over" the color line is by collectively admitting that all people who (voluntarily or involuntarily) identify as black are not black. And that's in the proven scientific, not arbtrary ODR sense of the term. |

"We" do not need to get over nothing. There is no "We"--save when some Negro sees something and thinks it is something all the other Negroes ought to do-- You live in a majority white society which has decided that the standards of beauty, intelligence, etc, shall be white. That ain't changing. What you need to do is not wait for everybody to "get over it" or whatever because from what I see, lots of Negroes never will. Physician, heal thyself! |

Chris -- ""We" do not need to get over nothing." Father Time has a unique way of convincing the un-convincible. But then again, no one ever said that "Negroes" were (that) smart. |
