A class move-- For those of you who say that it was what he would give her anyway, I point to all the other high profile divorces where the man dirties up the ex wife in public --Trump, Giuliani, Burt Reynolds, etc. If you got to end it, just do it and walk away clean. |

Well, all MJ has to do is put out a new Nike shoe which will replace the money he gives Juanita. |

Right on MIKE!!! Good for him (and I'm not surprised, I hear he has a good heart). He's a HUGE Cicely Tyson fan, too. I mean a "Collector" of her films, t.v. appearances.

Chris, He probably more than likely gave her half of what she and her attorneys know about and can find (Can anyway spell Swiss & Cayman Island bank accounts?). But I agree that that is a fairly classy gesture, nonetheless. |

I love MJ. Also loved that couple (even after I found out about his other shenanigans) so I'm sad to see them split. If nothing else, he is a good business man and likely has wisely adapted the saying "It's cheeper to keep her" to "It's betta to settle." |

Some BLACK MEN----because of the children----give the mother everything without a fight. HATE TO INSERT MY LIFE, but honestly... ...my children's father (A BLACK BLACK MAN) was never even ASKED to take care of his sons---he just does by instinct. The first question out of his mouth is ALWAYS in regards to his children. ALWAYS. Please, I'm not bragging---but I would be on SECTION 8 if he hadn't GIVEN ME his full ranch until the youngest reaches 18. He provides everything they need. When he was poor (when we first met, he didn't own his electrical business)...and he was the same back then with 10 cents as he is now with 10,000 dollars. Never asked him for a LOAF OF A BREAD---he just automatically takes care of us.
I see some of that in Michael Jordan. It's really not about Juanita, you know. |

And I wrote IN DETAIL in my autobiography about what a superior father and provider ________ is, as well as the Black American man who ADOPTED/RAISED me, so "male-bashing" isn't the only thing I do. ABM

I've noticed... The men who are MOST HURT because they didn't have a father are often the ones who kill themselves to take care of their children. My dad...my kid's dad...and ABM are just 3 I know of, so this whole 70% phenom right now may BACKLASH into a different behavior from the offspring of it.

Kola, I never could nor ever will understand how and why a man can refuse to care for his children. Yes. It's probably easy for a defeated man to want to cut and run. But HELL on him if he does that. |

Kola, And I'll go one step further to say I can't see how a man can love his children and not love their mother. That doesn't mean the parents can and should be together. But I can't see how you can look into the eyes of your child and not wish for and want the very best for the person from whom that blessing was born. |

Moonsigns, I agree Juanita got what she deserved. But blease with emotional/mental toll female victimization bvllshyt, already. If it was so gotdayam bad being Michael Jordan, she could have easily LEFT his a$$ over a decade ago. Becoming Mrs. Michael Jordan was the equivalent of winning a great prize. Well, such prizes can be EXPENSIVE. |

I really agree with ABM. Nobody has to PAY ME to be in a marriage (and because I lived with my man longer than 8 years, in Cali we're LEGALLY considered a marriage anytime I want to step into a court)--when you enter into one you take it for better or worse, and NOWADAYS when women like her have "law degrees"---you have options beyond being a doormat. I really don't believe in "alimony" completely, I think there should be a lot of regulations on it, though I do believe that there are real cases/situations where it's due. But I don't have anything "legally" from my kid's father---when we split, I told him to do what he wanted for his own satisfaction, because I damned sure was going to take care of my kids, regardless---and because I chose the right man in the first place, he's been a TOTAL provider. But I don't think Juanita Jordan earned anything. And unless it was HER who built up his business companies (I hear it was his mother and father, not her), then she really is being OVER-PAID after the divorce. And don't get me wrong--I like Juanita.

Kola, Well. I have a different take on this in that I believe what's earned and acquired in a marriage is indeed marital property, regardless of who actually had the job. And a marriage is a partnership in which both parties equitably share. Mike and Juanita were married for SEVENTEEN years. These days for a celebrity like Jordan that's dayamnear an eternity. And it's very difficult to know the degree to which Mike would have succeeded with Juanita. Maybe she did indeed provide for him a homelife that made it easy for him to become as great as he became. |

Yeah, we do disagree. I think those laws are "antiquated"...especially as women are no longer dependent on men to the degree we once were.

In fact, it's really unfair nowadays that a woman (let's say Pricilla Harmon) earning $300,000 a year on her own can go into a marriage with a man (Jergen Sloane) making $5 million and then 6 years later demand HALF of everything he has just because they had a romantic relationship. BULLSHIT! $300,000 is PLENTY of goddamned money for Pricilla to live off, and I'm against "child support"----but why should she get his millions just because she married him?

I'm not in the least against Michael Jordan giving her what he's giving----I think it's wonderful. But I don't agree that she's ENTITLED to it. No. This is where I do agree that "marriage" is very similar to prostitution---it's just a long term contract. And if that's the case, then I'm glad that I have even less reason to be ashamed of my Mistress/Kept Woman stage.

athletes shouldn't get married until they are done with their careers. half of them get divorced because over time they really never got to know their wives because they where always gone, when they retire and have to be around each other it doesn't work. i would have hooked her up, but not given her half ... he was very successful waaaaaaay before her met her. but i guess i'd rather it be her than robyn givens. and kola you'd think most guys who grew up w/o their father's around would deem it necessary to step up, but that's just not the case most of the time and that's a huge problem with the black families. |

As much as I don't understand men these days, I sure as HELL don't understand women. Women want to be equal to men, yet have all the benefits of chivalry, dependence. You can't have it both ways. |

Kola, I don't necessarily think there should be an EQUAL split of everything both parties own. I think there should be an equitable (or fair) split of what was accumulated DURING the marriage. And if you're NOT willing to share what's earned during marriage you should either execute a prenup or avoid marrying. A think a SUBSTANTIAL part of the reason for all the divorcing is many people really NOT want to share all (the good & bad) of what occurs in a marriage. |

"I don't necessarily think there should be an EQUAL split of everything both parties own. I think there should be an equitable (or fair) split of what........you should either execute a prenup or avoid marrying." So true! I've always felt that 1/2 is bullshit. I understand a woman (or man) getting a fair settlement and I understand the "spirit" of the intent. I have no problems with that. I feel a woman (or man) should receive a fair and reasonable settlement for what was created during the course of the marriage. But this 1/2 is, like I said, bullshit...IMO.

I think women have to take advantage of certain laws that are in place for their financial protection. Men are aware of these laws. If Mike didn't want to give up "half", he should have had her sign a pre-nup. Otherwise, his fault. I believe that most women have the innate ability to nurture. And, most women, especially if children are involved, will do their best to provide a secure, warm and caring environment for her entire family. Just as it is a 'labor of love', it is also a lot of work! And, in my opinion, most men wouldn't experience the financial/career success they do without a supportive homelife/wife. Therefore, if a split occurs, the wife is entitled to receive the money she has helped her husband earn.

I do believe there are times when both parties should equally share. For example, if the source of their wealth was created during the course of the marriage and/or if both were actively involved in creating and perpetuating their wealth, I think an equal split may be warranted. My biggest concern about spliting the wealth would be does the split impair the SOURCE of or either parties interest in and/or control of said wealth. For example, I'd be AGAINST Mike being FORCE to sell off interests in a very lucrative business just to effect their divorce settlement. |

Abm: "For example, I'd be AGAINST Mike being FORCE to sell off interests in a very lucrative business just to effect their divorce settlement." Moonsigns: I think in a situation like this it depends on the couple in question. If the wife (in question) is intelligent enough, she'd have the right to receive half the profit of this "lucrative" investment written into the divorce settlement. If it is a promising financial move, a wife needs to make sure she reaps the benefits --especially if she had encouraged her spouse to (initially) pursue the opportunity. It's only fair (and right).

Moonsigns, Indeed. They should share profits. Or, ESPECIALLY if the wife has NOT been actively involved in the founding, direction and management of the investment, the husband should be allowed to buy out the wife via paying her the (independently determined) fairmarket value of whatever interest in the business the divorce settlement dictates she is entitled to receive. |
