Sharpton Considers Running for President Jan 9, 8:01 AM (ET) By The Associated Press (AP) Rev. Al Sharpton speaks during the National Association of Black Journalists Convention in Indianapolis in this August file photo. Sharpton said Monday he is seriously considering a run for president. (AP Photo/Darron Cummings) NEW YORK (AP) - Civil rights activist Al Sharpton said Monday he is seriously considering a run for president. "I don't hear any reason not to," Sharpton, 52, said in an interview during an urban affairs conference sponsored by another civil rights leader, the Rev. Jesse Jackson. "If we're talking about the urban agenda, can you tell me anybody else in the field who's representing that right now?" Sharpton asked. "We clearly have a reason to run, and whether we do it or not we'll see over the next couple of months." Sharpton mounted a long-shot bid for the White House in 2004, in which his wit and fiery denunciation of President Bush often enlivened Democratic primary debates. He dropped out of the race after losing several state primaries and endorsed the eventual nominee, Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry. Despite widespread interest in the likely candidacy of another influential black Democrat, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, Sharpton said he's heard little substantive discussion of issues that might influence his decision about running. "Right now we're hearing a lot of media razzle dazzle," Sharpton said. "I'm not hearing a lot of meat, or a lot of content. I think when the meat hits the fire, we'll find out if it's just fat or if there's some real meat there." Sharpton said the candidate who impressed him most so far was former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, who has made poverty the central issue of his campaign. Sharpton ran for the Senate from New York in 1988, 1992 and 1994, and ran for New York City mayor in 1997. http://apnews.myway.com/article/20070109/D8MHP4E82.html

"Sharpton said the candidate who impressed him most so far was former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, who has made poverty the central issue of his campaign." Totally agree. I'm hoping Edwards will continue to impress us. And hopefully America is ready to receive what Al Sharpton has to offer to the debate. They weren't the last time. My fingers are crossed for this time around, if he in fact decides to run. |

Al is totally unqualified for the office of President--might make a good Mayor of NYC or even Governor, though |

Chris, Don't you think Sharpton should get elected to a (frickin') local school council BEFORE he's made mayor of NY State or City? |

Nobody thinks Sharpton is seriously running for president - not even him. But he CAN influence the national debate if America is ready to hear him this time.

The office of president needs to be abolished in America. The country should be run by a consensus of congress. Only ultra-ambitious, power hungry people ever seek this office, and who needs them do things like insisting on a surge tactic in fighting the war in Iraq. Hillary Clinton probably bribed Al Sharpton to throw his hat into the ring because he is actually a viable alternative to the urbane, Harvard-educated, bi-racial Barak Obama and Sharpton's candidacy would split the black vote. |

Tonya, Sharpton has never (ot me, at least) appear to be lacking an audience. Some, of course, have jeered as much those who've cheered. But then, hey. That sort goes with the territory. But I will say that Sharpton's surviving that Tawana Brawley fiasco is a real testament to his fortitude. |

Abm, Yeah, but he wasn't taken seriously... nor was his cause. In fact, he served as a comedian the last time, you remember; and a large part of his audience was there for that purpose only. I'm hoping it progresses a lot differently this time around, more effectively, to generate the type of pressure needed to keep the other candidates grounded. And trust me I would never question Sharpton’s fortitude, talent, smarts, none of that. The American public is what places me in doubt of him becoming President and his ability to revolutionize the debate. |

Tonya, I agree Sharpton's presence in the Democratic primary will help to keep things grounded in certain issues that most Americans - even many BLACK ones - would just rather sweep into some dark, dank corner under the flag. |

Finally you admit it "unenchanted". Now run along and monitor your king's conversation to make sure he doesn't dare commit the unforgivable sin of defending a white woman again, thereby causing your alter ego to magically materialize. WHOOOOOOOOOOOO. LMAO. |
