Breaking News: Study: Being Black In America Increases Mental Health Risks For Caribbean Born Blacks January 5, 2007 12:55 p.m. EST Linda Young - All Headline News Staff Writer Boston, MA (AHN) - A new study on how prevalent psychiatric problems were among black individuals in the U.S. made a startling discovery. Black immigrants from Caribbean countries experience more mental health problems than usual the longer they stay here, researchers say. When comparing first-generation Caribbean Blacks to second-or third-generations, researchers found that third-generation Caribbean Blacks had markedly elevated rates of psychiatric disorders. Researchers wrote in their conclusion: "Mental health risks were associated with ethnic diversity within the U.S. Black population. Increased exposure to minority status in the United States was associated with higher risks for psychiatric disorders among Black Caribbean immigrants, which possibly reflects increased societal stress and downward social mobility associated with being Black in America." Six percent of the U.S. black population is foreign-born, with the majority of those individuals coming from the Caribbean. David R. Williams, was the lead author. He is a professor in the Department of Society, Human Development and Health at the Harvard School of Public Health. The study was published in the January issue of "American Journal of Public Health." Copyright © All Headline News - All rights reserved. Wow. So you mean those stout and intrepid foks of West Indian stock are eventually as ravaged by the scourge of racism as us lowly descendants of American Slavery? Who wouldah thunkit? |

Let's not fall into the divide and conquer bullshit. Mental illness is typically dismissed in the black community by all types of black people (African, Caribbean and American). We ignore the signs and chalk it up to stress until one day something fucked up happens. We have so much shit to drive us stark raving mad. The last thing we need is state which black people amongst are better or who's worse. |

"The last thing we need is state which black people amongst are better or who's worse." This is true. Unfortunately, all those non-American born Negroes still believe they are superior to black Americans. I still haven't figured that one out. Any takers....???

...1993 LIRR shooter, Colin Ferguson was, indeed Chris, a coconut (born in Kingston, Jamaica)... he killed whites, an asian and he wounded a black woman too. Wasn't the "guy" he claimed did all the shooting a "Mr. Cee" or "Mr. Q"?? ..this guy defended himself at trial and I believe he cross-examined himself... CO-CO-NUT! |

I don't know if it's on purpose but I think some of us are missing the point. Caribbean Born Blks were used for this study, yes, odds-on for good reason. But what the study suggests is the LONGER you and your ancestors spent in this country as a minority, particularly a black one, the likelier you are to be a victim of "increased societal stress and downward social mobility associated with being Black in America." So in essence this study isn't really about how crazy Caribbean Born Blacks might be. It's more of a verdict on US!, since we've been here the LONGEST. The immigrants were used possibly because they were the most practical folks to focus on for this sort of study. It may have been too hard to use descendants of American Slaves since they'd likely have to start way back when and they probably don't have the data for that. |

Unfortunately, all those non-American born Negroes still believe they are superior to black Americans. I still haven't figured that one out. Any takers....??? They became free Negroes while Black Americans were still enslaved and picking cotton and tobacco. France, Spain and Britain had abolished slave trade in their colonies long before America did likewise in her colonies. Due to the tropical climate of the Caribbean, Central and South America and the West Indies, they were able to hold on to more traditional African cuisine and customs. Several African dialects are the premise of most of the patois they speak. And because during the antebellum era they outnumbered Whites 5:1, the majority of West Indians (including Guyanese) have a smaller percentage of "the White man's" blood running through their veins, therefore most look more African than Black Americans do. And last but not least, they speak with accents. Accents, mind you, which are linguistically closest to British/Irish accents than to African or North American accents. So much for African pride. </sarcasm> Personally, I usually don't have a problem with them. But when I encounter one with a funky attitude against Black Americans, this Black American is quick to tell them what she thinks of them. I call them "warehoused niggers" because that's essentially what that part of the world served as during the antebellum period. The slave ships sailed to Africa from Europe or America or Canada, gathered hundreds even thousands of Africans, dropped off most of those who survived the journey in the West Indians, Caribbean, etc, and only brought what they needed at the moment, the pick of the litter, to American or Canadian ports - usually Charlotte, South Carolina (the biggest slave trade port in the world) or Boston, Maryland, Virginia, New York or Delaware; in Canada - Nova Scotia, Montreal and Toronto. They then auctioned them off and, as more orders came in for slaves, slave traders journeyed back to the Caribbean (etc) and picked up the necessary quantity of Africans they'd previously dropped off; the healthiest amongst the bunch, of course. This saved time and money as the trip from the 13 colonies or Canada to the West Indies (etc) was much, much shorter (and less expensive) than the trip from said locales and back to Africa. Hence the term "slave trade triangle." The slaves were referred to and treated as "cargo" - complete with bill of lading. Like I said - warehoused niggers. |

Thanks for the very informative history lesson, Urban_Scribe! In any case, everybody is searching for somebody to look down on, and maybe the West Indians are frustrated and feel alienated to the point of being mentally ill because black Americans refuse to humor them in their attempts to place themselves above us. |
