I saw The Good Shepherd (Matt Damon, Angelina Jolie, John Tuturro, Robert DeNiro, etc.). Long but OUTSTANDING movie. DeNiro did a fine job directing the movie. Although there was very little violence and almost no blood, it was quite a thrilling movie. Definitely worth seeing again. The interesting thing is the movie included an BW/WM interracial relationship that was pivotal to the plot of the move. That stood out to me because ALL three of the movies DeNiro has directed (the other 2 being A Bronx Tale & The Score with Angela Bassett) have featured a BW/WM relationship . It's almost like DeNiro's extented and well-documented love for Black women is the source of his directorial muse. |

Kola Spoof would be praising him for casting dark skinned actresses with African features in his first two picturess oh and not forgot Sheryl Lee Ralph played his mistress in a movie he directed but Liya is light skinned but has the look Kola likes and I think Kola loves Angelina Jolie she said to you several times didnt she?

So you read Daily Variety too Lola? I think Kola was stupid for that since shes single DeNiro could have helped her get a better gig than writing for soaps. Hes gross but Kola could have worked him but no shes too busy being "No White Men Allowe" Queen of Sudan. Glad they clowned her in Variety. DeNiros better off without the drama that is Kola.

I just love your hatred of other Black women Enchanted. Especially those BW that you deem "loud mouth, troublemakers. Maybe, that is the reason why BW in general are in the predicament they are in. No unity. You remind me of those Klansmen in the old south that hated Black ppl who spoke up against inequality. But loved those Black ppl who "knew there place and stayed in it". I can imagine that Kola's biggest enemies are dark-skinned Black men and women. Black men in interracial relationships and White Supremacist. |

Good Sheperd was a good story, but there was too much of it. deniro overdid it, he needed to edit it down a bit. he underestimated his audience. ethiopians??... try ITALIAN... that female deniro cast to play the spy of the congo has a forehead bigger than Sade's... her big head and that white boy's pastey-ass skin... a match made in interracial heaven. |

Brownbeauty that is why I said you have to GO to Ethiopia and Somalia to see that they are mixed the natural people of those countries do not look like Liya and Iman. Ethipiopia, Eritrea, Djoubuti and Somalia are mixed with Italian and Persian going back thousands of years but they deny being mixed and that is why they call themselves "Ethnic". If you ever go to Ethiopia you will wonder why the people in the big capital city look so different from the rest of the country. |

Yeah Deniro is a serial Black Woman stalker. I heard he owns this restaurant in NY and the maitre d has orders to phone him if a fine Black woman walks in and he hustles to the spot. A woman at another discussion group I was at reported that he hurt one of her girlfriends real bad and was asking how he could be stopped. |

I notice a lot of WM celebrities get away with murder compared to the scandals put on BM celebrities but truth is famous WM are bigger whores than BM.

Tropical, Although Liya's character was central to the movie, beyond some grainy boudour scenes, there was very little attention pay towards her. And I endeavoring much to follow the plot of the film. So even if I had your ability to discern whether or not someone is African, I still might have missed that. |

So even if I had your ability to discern whether or not someone is African. *********************************************** That some people can not discern whether or not someone is African is what is so shocking to me. I'll never forget seeing Nigerian comedian Godfrey go up on stage and state "I'm African" and the audience laughed and acted shocked (like stop playing of course you're not African). Godfrey himself said something to the effect of 'what I'm not African because I'm not standing here naked.' What shocked me was how could ANYONE look at Godfrey and NOT see an African. I mean what else could he possibly be? That's why I posed my question to you. Since you don't have my ability to discern whether or not someone is African, what do you sometimes mistake Africans for? BTW, I'm also baffled by some people who act like Seal can't possibly be African and a few years ago a blurb on MTV's (or was it Rolling Stone) website even went as far as to describe him as "multiracial." I was like WHAT!!!???!!! |

If anything, it’s white people who look like East Africans (if they could be so lucky) not the other way around. Ethiopians are very proud people, proud of their culture, their history, their ancestors, their physical appearance. Can you say the same for your people? Why would they want to identify with your people? This whole idea of identifying with Arabs, please Ethiopians are very proud of being ETHIOPIAN! Sorry that you deem that "extremely racist." |

Tropical_Storm, You making something of nothing here. Perhaps I could discern whether or not someone is a native African were I to spend some time observing and talking to him-her. But, no, I can't tell whether or not one is African after only via observing some fairly limited, obscure and indirect references to them in movie. |

I have no idea what you're talking about with these "pure black" references. To me a "pure black" person is a descendant of slaves in the United States. "Pure black" has nothing to do with Ethiopians or any other Africans. I just love it when Blacks project their issues onto other people and love it even more when they become experts on Africa because they made a trip. I would NEVER mistake Liya for a "light sister." I always figured that Blacks could easily identify each other but I guess not. India Arie and Don Cheadle look like the Blacks that they are.

Are you insinuating that Africans dont call themselves "black"? because thats a dumb ass position. They indeed call themselves black and they more than us care about who is "pure" and who is "half mixed" or whatever. You are the one sounding silly by claiming that only we in America are "black people" and what I have most ofen heard Africans say is that there is no such thing as a light skin black. |

Are you insinuating that Africans dont call themselves "black"? because thats a dumb ass position. ************************************************* I'm not insinuating anything. Africans are NOT Black. Africans are Ethiopian, Nigerian, Kenyan, Yoruba, Igbo, Kikuyu, etc. Why the hell would anyone need to identify solely by the color of their skin when everyone else around them is the same color. Of course there is no such thing as a "light skin black." And yes, only your people are Black people. Your entire identity is tied to your skin color and history of slavery in the U.S. What else can you claim? Only among your people will you hear a mixed person list their lineage as German, Irish, Korean, Black, and Cherokee. Yes, only your people are Black! Love it and embrace it and stop trying to force that identity onto others who DON'T want it! |

Tropical Storm, I have heard this nonsense from other Black Americans, and I would like to know---where did you get this? Africans DEFINITELY and have ALWAYS referred to themselves as "Black people". In every corner of the continent WE DO call ourselves "Black" (especially when talking about Europeans and Half-Castes, which occurs DAILY). We have SONGS about being "black", we have stories about being "black", we have the TRADITION of the father setting his children out in the sun to get "blacker"----we have nations (SUDAN, EGYPT, ETHIOPIA, RWANDA, CHAD, TUNISIA) whose "name" literally means BLACK. In the late 1950's, early 1960's, when African nations were getting their independence---it was THEM, during the beginning of the Pan-African cultural movement that ENCOURAGED and INFLUENCED Black Americans to call themselves "BLACK" and to be proud of it. THAT IS A FACT...THAT BLACK AMERICAN HISTORIANS...other than Malcolm X and Ron Karenga...rarely bring up anymore. Many of the tribal names also mean= BLACK. We are THE black people...from which all others come. Why do SWEDISH call themselves "White?" when their entire nation is WHITE?

I have no idea which Africans you are talking about but when Nigerians are talking about each other they make reference to ethnic groups not "blackness." When Ghanaians are talking about each other, they too make reference to ethnic group NOT "blackness." If you want to call yourself "Black" more power to you but stop spreading misinformation. Your average Ashanti is not walking around Ghana thinking of himself as "Black." His identity is shaped in relation to those around him. It is his ethnicity that distinguishes him not his skin color. You also made the outrageous claim that most African men will not marry a woman that is NOT infibulated or circumcised so I hardly view you as an expert on all things African. While you're at it, why don't you and every other Black person here go ahead and define "Black." That term is so meaningless that I have no idea why any self-respecting African in America would adopt it. I'll start. The vast majority of the time when you ask a Black person to define the term "Black" they will respond with "Black people are mixed, Black means Black (notice they conveniently avoid defining Black), White and Indian." Funny thing is that when you ask these same people if they are 100% Black they will respond with "Oh NO, I am definitely not 100% Black, nobody in America is 100% Black." Basically these people know that "Black" doesn't mean mixed or "Black, White and Indian" but it hurts them too much to actually say what Black really means. It is only when you ask the question about them being 100% Black that the real answer to the definition of Black is revealed. My point is that if they understand that the definition of Black is African and do not see themselves as Africans then perhaps they should not call themselves Black. If they insist on calling themselves Black then they better define it and stop forcing that term onto EVERYBODY else.

FACT: The first full length motion picture ever made by an AFRICAN was entitled "BLACK GIRL" and was made in 1964. It was made by Ousmane Sembene in Senegal. Now why the hell was that, Tropical??????? ____________
As the trivia above proves....Africans consider and call themselves "BLACK PEOPLE" and they always have. JAMES BROWN'S RECORDING "SAY IT LOUD, I'M BLACK AND I'M PROUD" was an international #1 hit in 1968, but sold its MOST COPIES in the West Indies and in Africa. John Coltrane, James Brown and Miles Davis are much bigger stars in Africa than they could EVER be in Black America. I feel totally sorry for you if you really think that a bunch of WATERED-DOWN African-Americans are going to realistically live in the world and expect that ONLY THEY are referred to as "Black People" as if they're the only black people on earth...bullshit. I have also noticed that Blacks in Jamaica, Aruba, Belize and other MAJORITY BLACK countries call themselves "black people", "blacks". Any and everybody with God's Hair (nappy) and BLACK SKIN is "BLACK" and we are not like Dominicans....we call ourselves "BLACK". And for the record----in nations where INFIBULATION IS the norm, "MOST" men in those countries will not marry a woman who is not infibulated. THAT INFORMATION can be found on the internet and is FACTUAL. I didn't say "all", I said "MOST"---and again, that can be verified with an internet search. Genital Circumcision is NOT infibulation and both practices have been BANNED in several African countries--I believed it's banned in Senegal and Ghana, I'm not sure. But in countries like SUDAN and MOST North African countries where I come from---the WIVES are circumcised (often infibulated as well). ANY WOMAN WHO IS NOT IS CONSIDERED "low property".

Now why the hell was that, Tropical??????? ********************************************** Come on Kola, consider the political realities of that time period. No need to feel sorry for me. Call yourself whatever you want, just don’t force others to do the same. *********************************************** KOLA: And for the record----in nations where INFIBULATION IS the norm, "MOST" men in those countries will not marry a woman who is not infibulated. *********************************************** It’s fine when you put it that way but that is drastically different from stating “most African men.” *********************************************** KOLA: I have also noticed that Blacks in Jamaica, Aruba, Belize and other MAJORITY BLACK countries call themselves "black people", "blacks". ************************************************ What ethnicities do they have? ************************************************** KOLA: Any and everybody with God's Hair (nappy) and BLACK SKIN is "BLACK" and we are not like Dominicans....we call ourselves "BLACK". ************************************************* Kola you know very well that most Blacks simply claim ANY and EVERYBODY. No qualifiers! You know that most Blacks claim Nicole Richie because they want Black to mean mixed; “black, white and Indian.” The problem I have is that there are Africans in America using the term Black and defining the term Black in a way that is TOTALLY DIFFERENT from the way Blacks (Afro Americans, Negroes) use and define the term Black. I believe that to be one of the sources of many of the arguments that take place on this site regarding identity.

As the Black American continues to DIE OUT....Africans will continue to define what the term "BLack" means, as they should---being that they are the SOURCE and ORIGIN of all blackness. Black Americans HAVE NOT defined what "black" is....their Slave Master did. Not them. If you/they had defined it without white men's force, then they would have defined it as their ANCESTORS in Africa defined it---separate from Half-Castes. Which is more respectful of the HUMANITY of Black people. When the white race starts giving Cicely Tyson credit for her one drop of White Blood and calls her "Dark Skinned White"...that is when I will accept that JUST ANYBODY can be black. Nicole Richie is NOT BLACK. I think it's wonderful that Black Americans are being exposed to AFRICAN (their Ancestral) beliefs about color for a change. It's good so many Black Americans are being made to THINK ABOUT what "black" really is.

Off topic, but I am captivated by that woman's beauty. Senegalese women are really beautiful. Something I notice when I see clips from movies from the '70s is that they featured VERY beautiful women(with Afros) who looked like the actress pictured above. I don't think I EVER see women that look like that prominently featured in movies today. What happened? Those women were breathtaking! I am a child of the 80s so someone please school me about that era in movies. |

Those people, Tropical...are being BRED OUT, which is why you don't see them anymore. Which is why SOMEBODY other than Black Americans are going to have to RE-define what blackness is, so that BLACKS will want to STAY BLACK. And to me, that's the difference between the White Slave Master's definition of blackness and the African's definition of it.
