I suspect what follows might run countercurrent to the opinions of many who witnessed Terry McMillan and her gay ex's recent appearance on Oprah.
Jonathan did NOT come off as being the evil manipulator that foks might have presumed him to be. He actually appear to a sympathetic, if not a credible, figure. Yes. I believe he at least suspected he was bisexual LONG before they married. And he should have told her. But that in of itself doesn't make him an evil person. That just mostly means he's a weak human being...kinda like the rest of us.
Jonathan seems a more likeable person than Terry. Terry seems like she's a mercurical hand/mouthful for ANY man, especially some confused mofo, undereducated 23 years her junior.
Jonathan looks gayer than a motherfvhker. That boy so sweet my eyes got sugah Diabetes just looking at his d*$%lovin' a$$. To believe otherwise, Terry must have been dumb, blind or BOTH.
And even Terry admitted that she had some suspicions about him prior to his admitting such to him and the termination of their marriage JEE! I wonder if those suspicions partly stem from her having caught him with a stash of gay porn years BEFORE they had even married.
Oprah and Terry sort of harped on Jonathan wanting to score a lucrative divorce settlement. (Funny how when women get rich they view such matters very similarly to those of rich guys *SHRUGS*)
Dude wanting money don't mean shyt. Who-the-hell DON'T grab for cash during a divorce? And they conveniently left out the part about Jonathan having received legal direction from an associate of TERRY's attorney PRIOR to his having signed their prenup.
They sort of glossed over her repeatedly threatening dude. Yes. They played some of her angry taped phone calls to them. But they bleeped out the profane highlights. I think, as Jonathan asserted, Terry did do her share gaybashing.
And the (Black female) psychologist who appear on on the show made two very SALIENT points that Terri did NOT appreciate:
@ Jonathan was TWENTY years old (again, 23 years YOUNGER than Terry) when they met thus might have still been developing some sense of himself, including his sexuality.
@ Terry needs to own up to how her own character might have contributed to how she got mixed up with Jonathan.
This was FIRST/FOREMOST a marketing ploy to hock Oprah/Terry's book-2-movie deal. I hope for Jonathan's sake he was at least smart enuff to get some money from them pimping him out liked that. Otherwise, Jonathan may discover the biggest dyck he'll ever get dealt to him will be from a couple chicks. |

OK, I actually just read what you wrote. And I can't really fight you on it.
Terry's already won, of course, because Jonathan gave up on his legal fight.
I'm surely, however, that he was PAID for the big OPRAH showdown and that he's going to get rich off the book that Terry is now doing about their divorce. I hear he's "consultant" on that.
Watching the show---I really liked Jonathan and I felt that it was very sad that he and Terry can't be "kick'n it" buddies---because they have enormous chemistry. That was very apparent.

I agree there does appear to be genuine love between Terry and Jonathan. So you can't help but root for their being able to get passed the whole "Sorry, but I'm gay." thing dude laid down on her.
Hey. Maybe someday soon they can double date.
And I imagine both of them reaping the benefits of some Oprah-powered backing for her book won't hurt their reconciliation. |

I actually thought there was a little reverse sexism going on here. Personally I think Jonathan deserved some kind of a financial settlement for services rendered and for putting up with a looney tune like Terry. If the situation had been reversed, there wouldn't have been any great outcry about a woman seeking some form of monetary compensation from a man she had been devoted to before realizing she was gay. And Orprah needs to learn how to shut up when a professional is rendering a opinon. The poor psychcologist could hardly get a word in edgewise, thanks to Oprah's constantly injecting her personal opinions. |

I think if Jonathan were female and Terry male, Jonathan would be billed as this helpless young woman who'd been manipulated into doing something she didn't really want to do. And THAT would have resulted in her getting a much better divorce settlement than I hear Jonathan received.
Funny. I was watching something on the tub just last night that said they did a study that proved Oprah interrupted her guests more than any other talkshow host.
But, hey, you can't do NOTHING with a sistah who's got a BILLION bucks.

When I left my Bigma had just died. And that was (is) hard. Then a lot of crazy shyt went down between my mother, her sister and brother that has been just as tough to deal with. Still haven't been resolved and, alas, may never be.
But Destined, the girls and I are doing well. And, hey, life goes on.

I'm sorry but he is just a kid... Terry can seriously do better, lol. I saw a bit of the show too.. He seemed so innocent to me, but what a huge impact he's made in his life coming out to the entire world like that. |

Sure, it's debatable, whether he's a manipulator but he's a liar, thief and cheater -- by his own omissions. Don't feel sorry one bit for him. Doesn't matter if Terry was 2 or 20 years older. Whether she had $2000 or $2 million in her bank account. Whether she met him Jamaica, NY or Jamaica of the Caribbean Islands. Or whether she was dumb, blind or both. All of that had/has no bearing on his actions. She trusted a liar, and she certainly wasn't the first and won't be the last.
And, sure, they both need to accept their own responsibility and actions in their relationship -- and not just one of them.
But the fact remains: he signed a prenup, if he didn't want to use legal representation, that she offered, he could have gotten his own. If he wants money, then get a job and go to work like the rest of us. He brings nothing into the marriage, didn't seemed to do anything to help her create millions earned during the marriage, and then he thinks he should get some of what she's worth or have earned, upon divorce, even after admitting to lying and cheating on her and stealing from her. Can imagine the comments and reactions, if the genders were reversed.
He got exactly what he deserved. |

He did bring something into the marriage. He brought the youth and virility that kept ol randy Terry happy in bed, and if that makes him somebody who wants to be paid for being a sex toy, then so be it. His reputation is already tarnished, so why try to mend it. He should sue her for a financial settlement and take the money and run. The fact that Terry had a pre-nup that apparently provided nothing for him, proves that she didn't trust him from the beginning and she figured the only way to keep him was to make him totally dependent on her. She got what she deserved. Any time a middle-aged woman marries a 20-year old boy, she's putting herself at risk. |

I agree with Cynique.
If I had been "Jonathan"--whether I was wrong or right, I would have gotten some kind of settlement.
Young 20 year old women do it ALL THE TIME.
Plenty of wives turn out to be lesbians and they still get settlements, don't they?
He is a nice guy and an easy person to bend, and lucky for Terry, she was able to get out of this mess amicably.
But another person would have concocted all kinds of lies on her, set her up and stayed with their lawyers---year in and year out---until they got a big settlement. WOMEN do it to their older hubbys ALL THE TIME.

"Anon"--I love my library. But I admit to having a book-buying fetish. Some women love shopping for clothes and shoes. I love shopping for books and music. (And inexpensive household items...but that's a different issue.) Plus, I like to support authors' work financially whenever possible.
I haven't read TMc's latest. You best bet Ima get that sucker at my local library. (BUt if I like it, I'll probably still buy a copy--if not for myself, for someone else as a gift...)
