...all mothers and fathers! My babies turn 6 next week. Yesterday one said to me: "Mommy when I grow up, I want to be just like you." Every once in a while one of my friends or relations who does not (yet) have children will ask me questions about what it is like to be a mother, why do I do it since I have so little time for myself, how can I manage to be wife/mother/student, etc etc. Well, there is just no explaining. You have to first be a mother and have your daughter say something like that to you to know what it means to be a mother. There was a time when I thought I'd never have kids. Didn't think I'd have time. Had too many plans to save the world. Now I know that the most important thing any woman (and man) can do for the world, is to nurture the children in it. So, next week will be my daughters' birthday. But, it will be my Birth Day as well. It was then that I became truly me: Someone someone else wants to grow up to be. So, in honor of my Birth Day, I salute all you other moms and dads out there! |

I'm so glad for your presence and these very important reminders from you that we don't often think about......what with all the killing and knifing around here. Thanks, Kola. Actually, I'm a bull (Taurus!) but I feel much more drawn to my daughters' birthday as my own. Just what my husband needs-three women getting all excited and asking him "whatchu getting me for my birthday" at the same time! P.S. I have given up hope that you sisters (and some brothers) will stop playing with knives LOL I just have to accept that many folks enjoy on-line forums for a certain type of exchange... |

I'm a HOUSE MOM, Yvette. I don't leave and work outside in the city like you all. And I only have two little boys as companions, basically---so this board really does become a kind of VOID where I just VENT inbetween stirring batter the right amount of strokes and soaking the rhizomes for my secret pie crust ingredient. If people only knew how boring and isolated I really am. They would begin to understand the outlandish imagination. I'm a Black ashy BETTY CROCKER who writes books and talks shit from a lush, green prairie. Sorry.

I don't work outside either, but I'm thinking of going back to work this summer....just so I can afford things I really want my son to get: friendship with other children (he has NO playmates, his youngest cousin is 13), music lessons, a "field trip" every Saturday to the mall and/or zoo and aquarium, extra money for any extracurricular activities he may want, etc. Yvette, you must really be doing a good job for your daughters to think like that. That means that with all you're doing, they still know they're the most important things in your life. My biggest fear is that my son will resent me for "abandoning" him if I go back to work. Then again, he'll understand when he turns 15 and wants 200.00 shoes (which he won't get anyways). |

Yvette - That's very sweet and you are to be commended for being such a wonderful Mom. Renata - Stay home and sell stuff on eBay. Like everybody else. |

Thanks, Renata and Mzuri. My biggest revalation, tho, was figuring out that my goal should be to be a "good enough" Mom. Anything else is not possible and doomed for failure and frustration. Re: work-home--I made some choices regarding putting off my education (and career) to stay home with my girls when they were young. Once they were older, I made the choice to go through my program at a slower rate so I could, for example, be the one to take them to school in the A.M. and pick them up in the afternoon. I only wish all women (and men, too, actually) who wanted to explore this as an option could do so. And BTW, Mzuri, not everyone has stuff worth selling on eBay--or is any good as an "ashy Betty Crocker" for that matter! LOL |

I've been doing eBay for years. And a couple of years ago I took an early retirement from a well-paying federal government job so that I could do it full-time. It's really not that complicated and getting stuff is easy once you know how. I don't sell stuff that's sitting around my house, I operate a mail order business. Except my stuff isn't shipped thru the mail, but by 18-wheeler. It's not for everyone, but if you've got half a brain, anyone can do it. |
