IN HIS EYES (for Todd) I am sweet marrow wrapped in angel's flesh strength's elucidation of grace I am stillness in motion heaven and earth alloyed I am the only goddess and he comes undone when I dance I am alto now soprano then aria in rhythmic breaths lyric in silence soloist and symphony abreast I am the matchless voice and he lip syncs as I chant I am sapphire I speak watercolors in my lover's eyes I shine kathleen cross, © 2003

Ssmoothe and Sis Sarana, Thank you for warming my heart with your words of praise. That piece is so dear to me because it was inspired by (and is a tribute to) my best friend and soul mate who drowned in the ocean last October while trying to rescue a man caught in a riptide. In the seven years I knew him, the most important thing Todd Barr taught me is that "Love is not blind -- to the contrary -- it offers us a powerful lens through which we can view our loved ones more perfectly." Though I dance okay, and I can't sing a lick, his vision of me made me see myself differently. I would worship his belly over another man's six pack abs any day. Love can do that if we let it. I miss my honey. (He drowned in the ocean last October trying to rescue a friend caught in a riptide) Thank God for poetry and prayer (can i say that again?) Thank God for poetry and prayer -- it is through them our memories and spirits live.

Oops. Not a very observant editor. Didn't mean to beat y'all over the head with the facts about how he passed -- accidently left both mentions in. Wish I could fix it. Well, hey, I guess I just did |

Its cool, KC. By the way, I liked your poem, too. Its always refreshing to hear about someone attempting to save a life. Its also refreshing to 'hear' poetry from a new (to me) poet. Thank you. |

No lie, the left side of my heart just felt like it wanted to burst with tears, but the funny thing about that is before you went on to explain the specifics, the right side of my heart felt like it just wanted to burst with joy. I suppose that the existence of the two sides makes for what it all really means to me at this moment. That was beautiful, Kathleen. |
