I want to share my latest poem, titled Interlude". It was written about a painting by St. Louis artist Solomon Thurman that has the same name. Solomon (whose cousin was Emmitt Till) has just finished a cycle of paintings involving scenes of the past rural south--blacks in the cotton fields, in church, at home--Interlude is a large rendering of a black man and black womans' mouths, drawing close in a kiss--the background is cotton plants in bloom. Interlude 21st Century Solomon BlacknWise Knew Inspiration That bright Sunrise of the Mind Spied on blank canvas of imagination Cross Space and Time Two souls kissing Meditated With brush and oilpaints illuminated Interlude Brown African lips kissed Hot green fields cool and blissful Black American tongues touched White cash crop unplucked Two captive hearts run as one Free like snow melt In Black belt sun Paddyrollers in vain seek these runagates Ancestors mine--yours Born and bought for cotton rows Bred to hew draw and carry Marry shovels picks and hoes In that stolen moment past Did they know Solomon Thurman BlacknWise Their 21st Century child Would see Inspiration The Mind's Sunrise Their souls kissin cross Time and Space Meditate Kiss the blank canvas of his imagination With fiery oilpaints Brush with Truth Illuminate Their Interlude |
