It has been my general experience that poets are very protective of their work. They will go out of their way to emphasize or warn of copyright protection. They also prefer not to post on boards such as this because they are afraid of someone stealing their poem. My opinion is this: poets should post, boast, and toast as much as possible. Anywhere, all the time, and as much as possible. The whole world should hear them, read them. You can steal a poem but you can't steal the style. Not many of us will ever get rich off of our poems so many will end up with a lock box of treasures than never reach a heart or an ear. So why not put it out there. It might touch somebody. What are your thoughts?? | ||

I agree. What better reward than to have your work read? I've always regarded poets as a special breed; to steal someone else's work is like stealing their soul. No true poet would do this. | ||

Haiku, I feel you on this. I have had people take my poems and use them with out me knowing it. I have even had them edit some of work to fit who they were... This is so sad. It is like taking "Phenominal Woman" or "Ego Trippin" and changing them. Then you want to call your work original??? When people do stuff like this, my response is that my style can't duplicated. My work comes from my soul, so what ever you do, you can "cop that" but you can't "copy that". You dig? | ||

Rondall: I agree (and some of my work has been posted here). Quite often our work appears in print free, we read it free (and at times audio and videotapes are made of it) other times we may even pay to do it (by paying admission to an open mic). Nobody is getting rich off poetry--a shame, but maybe if we can get it out there and strike a spark we might see some rewards. I am reminded of old blues musicians who stated that, early in their careers they might get a fish sandwich for playing all night. I am reminded of many fine gospel singers who never got any money for singing. If we hide our light under a bushel what good will it do us? | ||

Chris, The benefits from the apparent rise in popularity of spoken word and other similar written/spoken art (e.g., "Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry") has not trickled down to you local, lesser known poets? |
