Hey can anyone suggest a modern African American poet for me? Preferably female... I have to read the poems to my class and I'd kinda like to find a poet who I can relate to

Dear Melody:

For good modern African American female poets this is the site for you.

Click on the URL below

http://authors.aalbc.com/poetsinfo.html

And surf around.

You are likely to come across poets websites and some anthologies you can check out to locate more poets.

A question about "a poet who I can relate to"--what are your tastes? What is your age group?
Do you read poets already? Who are your favorite poets? Are there any particular subjects you want to read about or avoid?

Not trying to pry, just trying to get a handle on your taste.

Well, I don't necessarily need something I can relate to, but I just want something that will move me. I've kind of been craving something touching, something with feeling, you know? I need something real. I don't read a lot of poetry right now, but it's hard to just find something. I've read some of Langston Hughes and some Countee Cullen, but I'm looking for something more contemporary.

Hi Melody Murray.
I am not African American. But please check out my website http://www.eclecticpoetry.co.uk and let me know what you think of my poems.

Thanks
amanda

Well Melody, you are still a little vague, but why don't you try these--Sonya Sanchez, Jayne Cortez, Nikki Giovanni, Ntozake Shange, Elizabeth Alexander, Thylias Moss, Ruth Garnett, Sapphire, Suheir Hammad, Tracy Morris, Stacy Ann Chinn

There is a fine CD with a sampling of many poets called OUR SOULS HAVE GROWN DEEP LIKE THE RIVERS. Give it a listen and see who you like on it.
