Omarion

I have to vent, even if the topic is trite: WTF is up with dudes decked out like ladies? Yesterday, I ended up having to cuss out a little shit for throwing a snowball a little too close to my vicinity. Couldn't have been older than 16. This dude had on two large cubic zirconia earrings, highlighting his shaved eyebrows and greased lips.

Can we please get rid of this trend?

Agreed!

Now I am not saying I want men to stop their efforts for better hygiene but it is quite ridiculous for men to even contemplate the usage of lip gloss!

Men :
- Please continue to wash and brush your teeth
- Please continue to shave
- Please continue to get haircuts
- Please continue to keep your fingernails dirt free
------------------------------------------------------------------
- Please do not wear shiny lip gloss
- Please do not wear big diamond studded earrings (especially in both ears)
- Please do not arch your eyebrows so meticulous that it is borderline freakish
- Please do not wear colored contacts - its straight scary!

Manicures are accepted but long fingernails on men are not - unless you are a coke head!

Maybe the person black wisdom encountered was gay. Personally, I think there is something cool and sexy about a guy secure enough in his manhood to wear studs in both ears; medium-sized ones anyway. I also don't have a problem with men who groom their eyebrows. This is 2006 and the meterosexual male is here to stay. Anybody looking for something to scowl about, need look no further than bejeweled teeth grills.

Ewww....that's the WORST! the fake "diamonds" on teeth....ew!

Kaotic, that was a really good list. I especially like the "continue to get haircuts" part. If I wanted someone with hair past their shoulders, I'd date a GIRL!

Arching eyebrows? I'm glad I haven't seen that yet!

Luckily for me, the "metrosexual" guys aren't into me. YAAYYY!!!

I tend to get the macho, somewhat (but not overtly) chauvinist guys interested in me. Which I like.

My husband (and exes) are all guys who for some reason think eating 3 times a day and sleeping late are for women and children. Guys who SHOWER instead of BATHING. Guys who get out of wack if their hair grows past their EARS. Guys who don't even wear ONE EARRING.

That's a man!

Black Wisdom, this is simply a manifestation of capitalism. Women are already at the point wear they uberconsumers, now men are next.

Actually your young men are already roped in. Men are already wearing makeup....

Wisdom, unless something really dramatic happens (like being overrun by christian fanatics or radical Muslims, this trend will continue -- at least for the rest of our lives....

Honestly if these men behaved as men (raised their children, respected their women and contrbuted to society I could care less how they looked or dressed.

Yes!

U R 100% right about the teeth business.
What in the hell is this all about!
Gold teeth has been around for some time now but leave it to the crumb snatchers of today to tweak and mastermind another oral craze.

THEY CAN'T EVEN KEEP THE SPIT IN THEIR MOUTH!

In reference to the eyebrows...
- Uni-brows out
- Crazily arched eyebrows still freakish

Grooming eyebrows is not the same as arching them. Grooming doesn't change the shape of a guy's brows, it just makes the natural line neater, the way a razor cut makes a guy's hair line neater. I don't like long hair on men either and I hate long dread locks - but I bet you don't, Renata. All the macho, superficial acoutrements of manhood don't mean shit if a brotha ain't got a job and can't take care of business in bed. IMO.

Ms. Renata - What does a shower bath versus a soaking bath have to do with being manly? Every body who has skin needs to soak every once in a while. And men need to relax as well - soaking baths are a wonderful way to relax. If you show me a brother who never soaks, I'll show you a crusty brother.

Brothers, please soak your crusty asses, get the toe jam out (from between your toes and from underneath your toe nails), work that pumice stone, and scrub your cracks and crevices - please!!! Do all the things that your mama taught you and apply some lotion or oil to yourself, your skin needs moisturizing. And don't forget the deo.

That's a good point, Troy! I never thought of that!

My brother is one of those "metrosexuals" and I tell him all the time he looks like a BITCH. I remember staying at his home when I was younger. He and his girlfriend (at the time) had maybe 5 children between the two of them. Every weekend they would fight over who got to go to the salon that weekend (they couldn't afford to both go, with 5 kids, 2 in diapers).

It was good for a laugh at least.

I have no idea Mzuri, but my men have always insisted that men take showers, not baths.

Luckily, (I'm crazy for men with NATURALLY really good flawless skin), they never seemed to even need lotion. My husband has feet that you would SWEAR was lotioned and loofahed and everything. No corns, no callouses, etc. But he works standing on his feet for 12 hours a day, and he says that his feet sweating all day is what keeps them soft. I walk barefoot all day, and NEED pedicures. He uses lotion only once a week, but he has oily skin and really doesn't need lotion even then.

As for relaxing, I absolutely agree with that. But, like I said, the men I've known seem to think relaxing is for women and children, and working hard is for men.

Kaotic, amen, needs to be repeated, even:

- Please do not wear shiny lip gloss
- Please do not wear big diamond studded earrings (especially in both ears)
- Please do not arch your eyebrows so meticulous that it is borderline freakish
- Please do not wear colored contacts - its straight scary!

This should be taught in schools.

They shower every day and DON'T STINK. That's enough for me.

The men I date aren't typical of men in MS that I knew growing up. I have 10 uncles all under 60, and maybe 2 are still working at all. The others have WIVES who work, while they stay at home, or they're on some kind of aid. That's considered NORMAL in central MS, so I'm lucky to find men who like working. Men I tend to end up with are/were working towards owning their own businesses and will only get aid if they're on their deathbed. They don't have time to soak, like MS men.

Troy, this goes beyond capitalism to me. I'm not a devout follower of Francis Cress Welsing, but she did have a point about the deliberate feminization of black men. Feminine black men with girlish hair styles, glossed lips, and large earrings might be an attempt to seem less threatening to the dominant culture. I find this trend absolutely revolting.

Cynique, I don't think the metrosexual trend is good for us. I don't like any trend which tends to feminize black men. You have a point about the mouths full of platinum and diamonds, but for some reason I'd rather see that shit than see a full-grown man wearing fucking chandelier earrings and lip gloss, whether gay or straight (sexuality has nothing to do with my objections).

Renata - Look for the toe jam Girlfriend, it's there. So you're saying that you and your man don't take bubble baths together even? Girlfriend, back away from your computer right now - go scrub out your bath tub, and draw you a nice hot bubble bath for you and your man. Get you some candles going in there and you know the rest :-)

And yes, this post is highlighting a superficial manifestation of something which I think is a symptom of a larger issue: namely, the propensity of the dominant culture to view black men as threatening and the trends which erupt within our community in response to that. I might be totally wrong, but I don't think that it is an accident that hip-hop, deemed subversive and scary by others, is now an avenue by which young black men are taught that it is cool to look like ladies. I'm sorry, that disgusts me. We need to get rid of this trend, now. Bring back the men, dammit.

I can't name even one person who soaks for less than 2 hours at a time. Showers take only 30-40 minutes. I say if you clean it all, and you don't stink, and you don't have any skin scaling off, it's fine with me. He'll take baths sometimes, but 97% of the time, it's showers.

Black wisdom, that is sick. EVERY WEEKEND I had to hear it! "you went last week...I need a touchup...can't you do it yourself...it only takes 30.00 for me, yours cost 50.00...why don't you wear a wig sometimes..." EVERY WEEKEND! I laughed my ass off.

Mzuri, I can't take a bath with someone else. I just can't. A shower, yeah. A bath with someone else kinda grosses me out. I don't want to sit in someone else's bathwater. That may seem romantic, but I just can't do it. I let my own bath water out and re-run it after 40 minutes or so.

Oh, Black Wisdom....that's NORMAL in MS. If you're a working woman in MS, and get your hair done on the weekends, you will see more men in the salon than you will AT WORK. NO LIE! And they have it all done: relaxers, braids, sometimes they'll get some kind of wave (this was years ago, don't know if that's still fashionable for men), deep condition, hair color, highlights, THE WORKS!

Renata, I'm outing my gender, but I have enjoyed many a bath with my significant other. He, however, prefers the shower otherwise. I don't see anything wrong with a man bathing, however, particularly if he's done something physical and you have to hook him up with the epsom salt. That's fine. It's the makeup- and jewelry-wearing, precious-looking man-ladies that I have a problem with.

as for jewelry, the malls here in Atlanta seem to have more men's jewelry than women's jewelry.....in black neighborhoods. White and mixed neighborhoods seem to have more women's jewelry in the malls.

Interesting.

Well Renata - You are unromantic and your man must not be as clean as you claim - LOL!

Anyway, I take a minimum of two baths a day - either soaking or shower bath - and every two-three days I take me a good long soak (either watching TV or listening to music) and when I get tired of that I let the water out, turn on the shower and wash my hair, etc. There are times I'm in the bath for three damn hours. I love it and I praise the Lord that I can do what I want with my time.

I don't mind men taking baths, myself, and I really think men need to relax. But again, men I attract tend to think of some things as "men things" and some as "women things". Baths are ok sometimes, but showering is preferred....no bubbles EVER...relaxing is for women, children, and old men....men get haircuts, women just let it grow...jewelry are for WOMEN not men (no man I've dated has ever liked jewelry for himself, but don't mind me buying it)....women eat 3 meals a day and snacks, men eat twice, mostly meat.....

I have NO IDEA how I attract these Macho types. I'm just glad I don't get those MS types of guys.

Cynique:
I guess being a Prince fan for 25 years kinda desensitized me to androgenous people. Maybe this is the trend of the future. Not only will the races become interchangeable but also the sexes. heh-heh.

Wisdom:
I see Prince as more an anomaly than anything else. The man's a genius and his attendant weirdness is off the charts. His huge presence in the black community didn't spur a trend of men wearing lace and ruffled blouses. He is a class unto himself.

As for this "races will become interchangeable" thesis, fat chance. Blacks have survived numerous attempts to kill/breed us out of existence. Didn't work before, won't work now or in the future. Sorry Cynique, we're pretty much impossible to get rid of at this point. Resign yourself.

So BlackWisdom's a "woman" but she's not Kola Boof. Huhm. How interesting indeed.

Why do you care? This is your second comment to me of this effect. If you had the least bit of computer savvy, you could probably ferret out my complete identity in an instant. Sorry Inspector Gadget, you're a fucking idiot. Go sit down somewhere while the grown folks talk.

LOL....Mzuri....we're both QUITE unromantic! I like being alone and we even sleep at different times. I sleep nights, he sleeps mornings. He showers at night, I take baths in the morning. He likes to be a man and his "hobby" is just to pay the bills and watch sports. I like taking care of him and the house, cooking, reading, and shopping.

We're SUCH OPPOSITES (on a lot of things), that we're the perfect MATCH!

I love it.

The next time you guys are out in the malls, check out the difference in jewelry depending on what neighborhood you're in. I want to know if this trend is nationwide.

That's something I wish I could have done before I married, Mzuri. I've never lived alone. I was such a Mama's girl that she wouldn't let me move out until I was 20, then I got a roommate, then got married. I'm 31, and have never lived alone. I'm an independent girl at heart, but never had a chance to be REALLY independent.

I don't like sock puppets. I apologized to ZB, because I was wrong. I guess you'll have to take my word on not being a sock puppet, 'cause you don't really have a choice given your limited computer skills, do you? Either way, it doesn't really matter. Either you think what I say is true, or not. But I have an infamously bad temper, online and off, and tend to viciously strike out at people who have attacked me.

That's what I was saying Mzuri. The nerve of this arrogant hack. I bet my last pot of gold it's Kola Boof desperately seeking more attention.

Fuck off, unless you want to talk about the feminization of our men. Or we can fight, and I can cuss you out. Any one of those options is good for me.

This weekend, I went to a mall (which I won't name because I don't really want to out the brother), and a guy gave me a "mini-makeover" (basically just lips and eye makeup). He had braids to mid-back and colored contacts.

He said he has a gf and a daughter.....but for whatever reason, I kinda doubted it. I could be wrong. He also said my son is cute, and if I let his hair grow out, he'll be happy to come over and cornrow it for me......IS HE CRAZY?!

Girl, BW, I hardly care if you're a man or woman. I come here to discuss issues and I answer posts depending on what was said and go by that, not who the person is or is supposed to be.

For all I know, you may be a gay unemployed Chinese man from Puerto Rico....but I'll just answer your posts. What you're saying about the feminization of black men is TRUE, whoever the hell you are and regardless of whether you're male or female.

Black Wisdom - Don't threaten me please. You know absolutely nothing about my computer skills. FYI - I've been working with computers for over 25 years and I currently earn a very lucrative income thru the net. How do you think I can sit on this board all friggen day? So save your lame insults for somebody else. I am not the one.

No one is attacking you. You registered as a man but you're really a woman, yet you accuse other ppl of being an "internet sock puppet?" What's up with that?

Thank you Cynique. Notice the vulgar language towards people who merely question. And why is it that this board has every militant back to Africa squab, but I don't run across these jokers in real life? The law of averages says that there's something stinky here. Namely a pair of huge crusty African feet.

Must be true, Inspector Gadget, your investigative skills astound. I love internet detectives who haven't the first clue. Now do you have anything to contribute to the topic, or no? Fake name, genius. Most people of sound mind assume that a good 50% of names posted to a message board are fake. But you know what? Why don't you consider me a sock puppet of Kola Boof. There, feel better? Now respond substantively to my post, asshole. This is my thread.

I am NOT Black_Wisdom. I would not be talking to Mzuri, whom I love, like that if I was.

And I am not PrettyBabyGirl.

No matter what I do, I am accused of being almost every NEW poster that comes here. So I have just given up.

But please don't blame me for what others say and do.

I have no reason to post as anyone else at this point.

MOST of my old "alter egos" were because (a) I had been BANNED from the board and had to sneak in ......or (b) To play tidli-winks with ABM.

I no longer have those concerns.

Good grief. WHO CARES!!!! You must be a newbie to message boards in general. I'm sorry for you if you are not famous yet posting under your real identity. I would not advice doing such. But it is clear that you have zero substantive to offer to this discussion, which is about ideas, not identities. Trust me, we will never know each other, so let it go. Post on topic, please.

She cannot conceal the Kola Boof essence that is the glue that holds all of these crazy characters together. Kola Boof is a mentally disturbed woman who when she gets off her meds uses these boards as an outlet for her multiple personality tendences. If it wasn't so pitiful, it would be funny.

Black_Wisdom,

You've basically been advancing all my opinions...so I'm not about to get into it with you.

I've been here 4 years, and I love most of the people here....because I can feel them inside myself.

We're a DEEP group here, many of us email away from the boards, network our careers, are famous authors or agents, and even those of us who are "enemies"----are still likely to Bar-b-Q together and have admiration for one another.

I disgree 100% with Cynique...but I also consider her family. I despise her ideals, she makes me SO mad.....but if we lived on the same block, I would fight anyone who tried to harm a hair on her head.

It's just a "village" thing. Hard to explain.

Fair enough, Kola. I have a much different philosophy when it comes to interacting with others on a message board. To me, boards, blogs, and forums are places where ideas rule, not people. Ideas must stand on their own. Words and intellect must carry the weight. That is comforting to me, as it reaffirms my value apart from personal charm or looks. But different strokes for different folks, and if you guys have set up a family here, I can respect that and avoid posting in the future.

Well Ms. Internet Sock Puppet - Obviously you care since you accused someone else of having another persona just this morning, and made the statement that "I don't like internet sock puppets...." How can you say you don't like something when you are one your own self? Hypocrite!

And since you're so clueless let me enlighten you - THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF LOVE!!! For instance you can love your car and you can love your children and you can love fried chicken but they are not the same types of love. Get it? Kola can say that she loves someone on a discussion board because she has established a rapport with them, which is something that probably won't be happening for you here - because you are an INTERNET SOCK PUPPET!!!

Mzuri, a sock puppet is a message board account created for the express purpose of manufacturing support or agreement for an existing commenter. In other words, an existing commenter creates a new account which is used to express agreement with the user's other comments.

Learn and grow. Next time, you'll actually know what you're talking about.

You should keep posting.

You make a helluva lot of sense. Even about your views on POSTING on the internet. You're right.

The only thing is that after YEARS go by....you can't help but really know the posters inside/out...your own philosophy bears that, as you know the MIND of your manions.

Please stay and keep engaging everyone. We need smart, honest people like you.

Internet Sock Puppet started a rant about "WTF is up with dudes decked out like ladies?"

And Internet Sock Puppet subsequently wrote "Words and intellect must carry the weight. That is comforting to me, as it reaffirms my value apart from personal charm or looks."

Okay so Internet Sock Puppet - do ppl's looks matter to you or don't they. You must be a newbie because you are contradicting your own self on a thread that you started. Why don't you make up your mind?

"Ms.

And don't forget the deo."

I disagree with this I'm a female and haven't soaked since i was like 10 and now i'm 21 and i'm not crusty and don't ahve hygene problems...I never heard of it being mandatory that people soak every once in a while in order to avoid hygene problems

"Renata: "But, like I said, the men I've known seem to think relaxing is for women and children, and working hard is for men."

And THAT's one of the main reasons why Black men die before everybody else."

ABMN, i disagree wiht this....black women tend to be ore likely to die from diseases and maybe it may have something to do with gender standards where it's not seen as manly for women to do heavy labor. If you look at stats black men are healthier than black women. People who do what we label manly labor tend to be healthy.

Okay so Internet Sock Puppet - do ppl's looks matter to you or don't they. You must be a newbie because you are contradicting your own self on a thread that you started. Why don't you make up your mind?

Ohmigoodness. See, this is why you can't get pissed with me when I call this imbecilic. Are you truly not able to distinguish between communications on a message board and interactions/relationships you have off-line?

What is wrong with you?

Well Internet Sock Puppet - Thanks for the clarification because all this time I thought that an internet sock puppet was just a fake assed person that created a phoney posting account by using the fictitious name/identity of someone of the opposite sex, pretending to be the opposite sex for the purpose of misleading and deceiving others, accusing others of being an internet sock puppet and then outing themselves as a liar. I didn't realize that an internet sock puppet had to have an ulterior motive. BTW, what's yours?

So this morning when you accused ZB of really being Kola, you thought that Kola needed to create an internet sock puppet so that it would seem that others supported her views?

Wow, you're even "more stupider" than I thought. :-(

black_wisdom, i personally see what's being labeled "feminization" as progress just like i see more women working and participating in sports as progress. It's good to see gender lines becoming more and more blurred. I think the gender lines of the past opressed both groups (men and women) in a way but especially women.

Also, the idea that men wearing 2 earrings in their ear is feminine is nothing more than a culture thing. In some cultures men wear make up and before colonialism hit africa men actually wore 2 earrings in their ear

That's a point, there Misty: the fact that pre-colonial Africans did wear large amounts of jewelry. But I think that you have to add the fear and loathing of black men in this society into your analysis of this trend. Is it mere coincidence that there have been several media-driven efforts to convince black men that they are more attractive when they adopt feminine characteristics? Perhaps my theory is all bullshit and this has more to do with Africans throughout the diaspora naturally gravitating towards ostentatious displays. I dunno.

Alright Internet Sock Puppet. I asked you some very simple and relevant questions. But you seem to be letting your anger ruin your train of thought. I'll give it one more try:

You registered as a man and now you're "outing" that you are really a woman. What's up with that? I got the anonymity part, what's the rest of it?

Are you metrosexual? Transgendered? Or just indecisive?

This morning when you accused ZB of really being Kola, did you think that Kola needed to create an internet sock puppet so that it would seem that others supported her views?

Do ppl's looks matter to you or don't they?

If you could respond without insulting me, that would be great. Thanks.

Yup. So that nutjobs like you, eager to use limited skills to ascertain my offline identity, would be thrown off track. Get over it.

Are you metrosexual? Transgendered? Or just indecisive?

All of the above. Feel better?

This morning when you accused ZB of really being Kola, did you think that Kola needed to create an internet sock puppet so that it would seem that others supported her views?

I was wrong.

Do ppl's looks matter to you or don't they?

What the hell? This thread has nothing to do with attractiveness; this is about whether a trend which has our men looking like ladies is harmful to our community. Do you have anything to add?

If you could respond without insulting me, that would be great. Thanks.

Why should I? You are a halfwit who, along with others, ruined my thread with this "off-line identity" troll. Kiss my ass.

Men who look like Prince may be quite entertaining, but he's a little girly for me.

I too love Prince but he's an entertainer who lives in a purple palace. I prefer military type guys who look like they eat rocks, no piercings, between 180 and 230 lbs, I prefer them to be bald headed, packin a powerful punch and they must take bubble baths every once in a while :-)

Ms. Misty, I didn't say anything about soaking being mandatory. Some people live their whole entire lives without ever washing or brushing their teeth. Obviously we are not those. I enjoy taking long hot showers but really, we need to soak every once in a while. Number one, it helps to remove old built up skin from under our nails and elsewhere - and it just promotes well-being because it gives us a chance to relax and reflect in a way that we just cannot do in a shower bath. But if you don't want to that's up to you, to each his own.

I am an Army brat - Dad was in the military. And I was employed by the Dept of the Army during my working years. And so I absolutely loooove and adoooore soldiers. Those are the best guys in the world, they are respectful, courteous, considerate, physically fit, self-disciplined and they have a job! I had the opportunity to see them in all aspects of their daily working lives - marching in parades, ordering their soldiers around, providing soldier care, working at their desks and just taking care of everyday matters. And of all the different types of men in the Army, I was always attracted to one who looked "hard" like his dog just died or something. Because they always turned out to be the sweetest ones. And when it's Miller time, those guys like to relax and be spoiled. Our soldiers are some hard-working ppl - they are soldiers 24 hours a day :-)

I have no problem with a man taking care of himself--as I find it very attractive for a man to lotion his skin, wear cologne, have clean, trimmed finger AND toe nails, and have a nicely groomed goatee and tight hair-cut. However, there is a huge difference between a man who takes care of himself and a man who wants to put gloss on his lips, wear ladies earrings, put clear gloss on his nails, and appear to be overly feminine--as if he *could* be gay. I don't dig it--at all!!!!

It's quite obvious that there is a huge pull by major beauty and fashion companies to increase their profits by including men in their new lines. I think we are seeing the result of this.

Both Misty and Moonsigns have made decent points, but there is a curious confluence of events which has me doubting that the new "men as ladies" trend is innocuous: hip hop, once considered a threatening and subversive art form, now features men bragging about spa treatments and jewelry. WTF? At the same time, hip hop has become almost completely commercial and is now created so that it can be palatable to the dominant culture. Is it mere coincidence that this larger marketing effort is accompanied by the wide-scale bitchification of black men?

Look at Kanye West's "Diamonds are Forever" track. He ambitiously takes on the subject of the international diamond trade and its attendant exploitation of people of color. How much more powerful and subversive would this message have been if it had not been delivered by someone who loves to wear form-fitting clothing and calls himself an avid devotee of high fashion? And if this were all about capital, is there as much of a similar trend in the white community? Where are the white men wearing dangling earrings?

BW,

Unfortunately, I don't think Kanye's "message" would have even made it mainstream if he hadn't "dressed-up" a bit--if he hadn't pulled out the "high-fashion". Reason being, capitalism runs shyt here. Period. American's are far removed from the grim reality that many non-Americans live on a day-to-day basis. We feel guilty for a second--then pray in the next that we aren't "living there".

As far as the "wide-scale bitchification of black men"--you've made some interesting and valid points!

BW:
"And if this were all about capital, is there as much of a similiar trend in the white community? Where are the white men wearing dangling earrings?"

Moonsigns:
The white men wearing dangling earrings are, in fact, out there. However, I don't think the white owned media exploits them as much because, in general, I think Americans (regardless of color), have very stereotypical perspectives of what is "white" and "black"--whites are "individuals" and blacks are "all the same". A white man wearing "dangling earrings" isn't a representative of the entire white community, however, a black man doing the same, is. I'm not condoning, just sharing my opinion from my life expereince(s). On the flip side of this, I question why any man would want to be so feminine (that is a whole other discussion), however, in America, both, if they choose, should not be burdened with the weight of "speaking for" all those who share their "color".

On a whole, I totally believe the white media knows what they are doing, that is why I find your comments interesting (and valid). However, I think both whites and blacks have a responsbility to remedy the situation--and I think it will have to begin with blacks putting their foot down. Otherwise, the explotation will only continue.

Unfortunately, I don't think Kanye's "message" would have even made it mainstream if he hadn't "dressed-up" a bit--if he hadn't pulled out the "high-fashion".

And that's the point, right there, though, Moonsigns. Subversive lyrics watered down and made more palatable with feminine imaging. The whole point of the imaging is to make a more feminine Kanye seem less threatening to a larger culture which has HUGE issues with notions of the masculinity of black men. That this imaging is now translating into the day-to-day choices of non-famous black men bothers the fuck out of me.

And I've never bought that whole "it's capitalism" stuff. Capitalism is nothing more than a means of ordering an economy for optimal productivity. The problem is not necessarily that the entertainment industry desires to capture larger markets and sell; the problem is what has to be done to black people so that we can be packaged to be acceptable to the dominant culture. For black men, we are seeing that they have to signal their unthreatening status, whether by negating the diseased ideas of black manhood with lipstick and jewelry, or choosing white spouses to signal their belief in the superiority of whites and submission to the value systems of others.

American's are far removed from the grim reality that many non-Americans live on a day-to-day basis.

There's some truth to that.

We feel guilty for a second--then pray in the next that we aren't "living there".

Might be true, also. But there are many in this country who are doing so hot either. Read "Development as Freedom" with the stats which show that black men in ghetto environments have a standard of living and life expectancy either equal to, or worse, than the standard of living and life expectancy of men in the poorest developing nations.

Black_Wisdom, "Moonsigns" will never totally get your point, because she's a white woman in denial about the reasons her black husband chose her.

Which, frankly---I don't blame her. The truth is too painful, and since women like her marry black men to have a place amongst blacks where their superiority is confirmed...it would be devastating to see herself as "smudged". NO--she must be the "pearl". Savior and Special Angel, sacrificing herself to the negro canvas....which, behold--she DOES see is beautiful! Bless her for that.

And like most whites, she hangs on to the belief that blacks are just people reacting and behaving without regard to any racial stimulus. CLASS, according to her, is more important than race and color, which she tends to trivialize.

BUT....

The feminization of Black men is NOT foisted upon our culture by White men. This is something that black men are choosing, just as they choose a White woman to go with their Brooks Brothers suit. It's all about "STATUS"----status being the dictator of all fashions.

Black men's insecurity and their legendary selfishness are the biggest drivers of their inner power.

Definitely not ALL Black men...but the great deal of them.

But Kola, aren't black men merely reacting, rather than driving this whole feminization thing? Are they not responding to a society which demands that they must signal their non-threat? Insecurity maybe, but I'm not on board with the "legendary selfishness" theory.

Oh please.

You don't know a thing about African men and their history if you don't know about the "legendary selfishness" (MYSELF before the tribe, before my wife and family) of Black men.

Where do you think the whole PIMP mentality comes from?

Women with Plates in their mouths?
The tradition that MEN must be served food before women and children?

Kanye West announcing that he's addicted to porn, but doesn't see a problem with it---sexing up Pamela Anderson to the humiliation of his supposed black girlfriend and then blaming it on porn.

Flooding our community with Media Images that serve black male lust....but denigrate and destroy the black community itself.

You don't call that shit selfish?

I get so sick and tired of Black Americans deluding themselves that the White Man is SATAN...and Black People are just innocent bystanders.

Shit, we African people SOLD our own children into slavery.

And now YOUR people are selling your very souls.

Why is everything the White man's fault when we all KNOW the history and KNOW that we're selling out?

Right now--in West Africa, where prostitution is LEGAL---they take their darkest skinned daughters and sign them up as Prostitutes to pay for the college educations of their sons in Europe---sons who then marry white women.

In Kenya, Black Men force their daughters to put ads in the paper seeking "European Husbandry"---which COSTS the white husbands, but they get a submissive black slave whose ignorant, uneducated and can be worked like a pig.

Shit, my Arab father purchased my mother for marriage.

Wake up from your delusions.

You can't have a slave without the slave's desire to be a slave---on some level.

And Black Men, going back to Africa, have ALWAYS offered up their wives and children as "Sacrifices" when outsiders dangled a shiny object in his face.

Legendary selfishness is REAL.

BW,

I agree that capitalism is "a means of ordering an economy for optimal productivity", however, I think that is too simple of a definiton for this place in time. It has evolved into a culture of individuals who are obsessed with gross excess of everything and anything--from food, to sex, to fashion.

BW:
"aren't black men merely reacting, rather than driving this whole feminization thing?"

Moonsigns:
I think there are two sides to this. I can understand how black men (in general) could be perceived as simply "reacting", however, black men can't act as if they aren't aware. If Kanye is aware of the issues in other countries, he certainly should be aware of the one-sided, white owned media in America. On the flip side, I understand how Kanye could be viewed as an "artisit" who expresses his individuality through his music. Is he, as well as other black celebs, enjoying "high-fashion" like many non-blacks have done for years? Should he (and other black male celebs) be held to a different standard than non-blacks that are of the same social-status--If so, why? If not, why?

You don't know a thing about African men and their history if you don't know about the "legendary selfishness" (MYSELF before the tribe, before my wife and family) of Black men.

Like the ones who took beatings and bullets during the civil rights movement?

There's much truth to the remainder of your comment, but no balance.

And there's much DENIAL to your tunnel vision.

Black men are a product, FIRST...of African cultures.

Inately sexist cultures that promote Men's "selfishness" (me,me,me)...and trains females to coddle, pamper and infantilize men--through the women's own "servant mentalities".

There is a lot wrong with us....separate from the evils of White men.

And the black man's selfishness is one of those things.

Otherwise--you wouldn't have 70% of black children in fatherless homes.

"Let the women hold up the community!"

You wouldn't have "the majority" of black mothers breaking their backs to provide for these children...while "the majority" of the fathers are busy obtaining car rims, gold necklaces, designer clothes and beauty parlor treatments---and bragging about the 10 bitches they got--and especially saving up to AFFORD to take the Whitest bitch in their stable to her favorite restaurant.

Selfishness. Let the women carry the load.

We can't heal ourselves if we can't see that WE are responsible for much of our own condition and our reactions to the larger role.

That is why Africa is so weak now. Infantilism among blacks.

Michael Jackson wants to be a White woman and have white children.

Prince wants to be feminine and lied for years that his mother was a white woman.

Now you have these new black men who want to be more groomed and cherried-out than PET POODLES.

It's all part of their selfishness.

Me, me, me.

Notice that men like ABM and my children's father and Troy Johnson aren't like that.

But they would never KEEP IN CHECK the men who are, so the cycle blooms and dominates.

Notice how black women run to Defend a black man the moment anyone questions him.

But let a black woman be attacked---she's completely on her own.

Selfishness.

On one hand, I feel like I can't even argue with that because it's true. It's like, I can't even rebut it. But I am still struck with the impression that your truth lacks balance. It's not clear to me how one can separate the reality of living within a society which denies black personhood with the attendant actions of black men.

For example, when hip hop was in its infancy, it did not feature pimps, sluts, clothes whores and other such nonsense. It was (1) a statement of pure rage; and (2) a vehicle by which we expressed the best of our oral storytelling tradition. It is not coincidental to me that as hip hop was transformed into something more palatable to the mainstream, the pathologies began showing up in spades: bitchification of men; wholescale slander against black women; and as other commenters noted, stark, blatant colorism.

There's a fine line here: yes, black men must stand up and be responsible for the salvation of our community; we will not survive otherwise. However, we cannot negate the profound and mostly negative influence that the dominant culture has had on the psyche of black men. We do not have to sacrifice the acknowledgement of one truth for the other.

DAYUM GIRL!

I pointed out to my mother this past week that the majority of women in this country are pushed out of the family home at around 18 or 19 (they're GROWN, they need to take care of themselves!), while men are allowed to live at home until their 40+ (who's going to cook and clean for him? He ain't married!). She agrees with me.

Kola, I would send your book to her, but she would have a heart attack! She's one of the most prudish people I've ever known. More of a prude than I am, and that's saying something!

Yeah, but how often do you hear the other truth: "it's the white man's fault?" Contrast that with us taking responsibility for our own actions.

I'm an African, so it goes much deeper for me.

The history goes further back.

I'm not telling you to negate one truth for the other.

I'm telling you to be aware that after you get rid of The White Man and White Supremacy---you are still left the imperfect evil of African humans themselves.

In other words, many of our ills could be solved if we stopped blaming any and everything on White Men/People. Much of our suffering, historically, started first with a powerful black man trying to do good for himself (and only himself)...at the expense of the village.

It's 1,000 years later and we still have not learned that lesson.

WE DENY IT.

Look at the dictatorships in Africa the last 30 years. They keep Africa from rising, because we refuse to acknowledge that we are the beginning of both GOOD and EVIL.

In my latest book, I have a chapter "GOD IS A BLACK MAN".

My secret is that I worship Black men. I want to be their slave and devoted servant.

But I can't trust them anymore.

The recent mistreatment, abandonment and defilement of Black women in favor of the White Man's mother has made me lose respect for our men....and I am more loyal to my womb and to black children.

I have many black men that I love--my father, children's father, colleagues, etc.

But so what.

I believe that black women have to consciously begin to create a new black man.

The majority of the ones I see today...OUTSIDE MY CIRCLE....are the same old Village Sellers, selling out the people.

I had no idea that Prince wasn't bi-racial as he makes it seem he is. In the video for "When Doves Cry" (I guess it was footage from Purple Rain), the woman playing his mother was white.

But that's going on all over MS, probably in other places as well. The only difference is that they usually say their FATHER is white....because he isn't around as proof that he's black anyways.

Kola is a deranged nutjob and pro-Israel Jew-shill who secretly wishes she were white. Then she would not whine so much.

And P. Lewis is a transparent slob with NO NUTS who wishes I was White, so that he could finally be attracted to an African woman.

Like most colorstruck niggerstock, he can't take the truth, and lives in a perpetual state of denial.

Prince, for all of his genius, is the definition of a coon.
