Bryant Gumbel goes racist

Here's a riddle: So if it takes Rush Limbaugh a full week to be booted from ESPN for rather nebulous comments – at best – about black quarterbacks in the NFL, how many times can Bryant Gumbel incite direct racially based "playa hatin" before he gets a slap on the wrist?
Sorry, I now recognize that is a rhetorical question with no known answer. But doesn't it just rub somebody wrong somewhere that Gumbel can echo the thoughts of Hitler and someone barely notices, while fellow broadcasters say far less and receive merciless verbal beatings?
What did he say?
Well for starters he implied that Olympic athletes competing for the medals at the Winter Games shouldn't truly be considered great because not enough of them are black.
So try not to laugh when someone says these are the world's greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention.

But didn't the former Nazi supreme commander used to think of black athletes as superior as well? At least in physical prowess? Sure, he believed they were subhuman, but in reality, he feared a black man's athletic abilities.
Now Gumbel draws a comparison to athletes of other races and assumes, speculates and advances the argument that blacks are in fact superior athletes. Of course, its complete idiocy – but don't tell Emperor Gumbel.
Not that American blacks are drawn to winter sports necessarily, nor do they have to be, nor should they be. The wonderful thing about American culture is that we pretty much get to decide growing up if we would rather kick a soccer ball, throw a football, hit a baseball, or fly through the air on a snowboard – it's up to us. Tim Meadows' old skit on "Saturday Night Live" illustrated this well when he portrayed the lone black man in America who had to have his African-American hockey fix.
Of course, Gumbel's comment was a two-sided jab. And while he attempted to make humor about how much he personally – as a tolerant black man – has no tolerance for "whitey's games," the real backhand is the jab he took at conservatives. Gumbel again fell prey to a classic fallacy – about which liberal black elites are in harsh denial.
More blacks are associating with conservatives now than at any time in history since the end of the American Civil War. (At that time, blacks consistently voted Republican until the Democrats founded the KKK and intimidated them into a voting block used for the Democrats' purposes.)
Gumbel may not speak to average blacks very often from his ebony tower, as he looks down his nose upon the rest of the world. But I do. In New York City, my radio talk-show's audience is roughly 60 percent African American, with numbers of friends telling friends every day.
Gumbel may grumble about the percentage of blacks playing sports at the Winter Games, but what he should be concerned about is why seven out of 10 pregnancies in the black community occur in illegitimacy. And why a higher percentage of those end in abortion than all other ethnicities combined. Maybe Gumbel could explain the effect Planned Parenthood has had on the depletion of the African-American community through its strategic targeting of black neighborhoods. Maybe Gumbel could offer an explanation on why, in doing so, the black population in America is in actual decline. Maybe he could, but I doubt he will.
Of course, Gumbel is not alone. His accomplices in the media cover for him and every other liberal foible because it's not a mistake if a liberal does it. Meanwhile, if Rush Limbaugh makes an observation about black quarterbacks, he's verbally executed for it – in a community that supposedly opposes capital punishment.
And while we're at it, I wonder if Gumbel views the U.S. troops who fight for our freedoms with the same amount of disdain as he does the U.S. Olympic team? After all, both groups are fighting for the qualities and values Americans believe in.
Then again, we wouldn't want to tax Gumbel's paucity of thought on the matter.

This article is riddled with inaccuracies. For example:
blacks consistently voted Republican until the Democrats founded the KKK and intimidated them into a voting block used for the Democrats' purposes
(Anyone with even a cursory knowledge of black political history knows that there was no black Democratic voting bloc until LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act, causing racist white Dixiecrats to flee the Democratic party en masse, creating the modern GOP.)
I'm no Gumbel fan, but I'm happy he spoke up about the dearth of African Americans in the winter games. This article does not appear credible to me, at all. |

This story was posted at Drudge on 16 Feb and I made it a point to watch HBO Real Sports a couple of nights ago to hear his comments for myself. I saw the Olympic opening ceremonies and was wondering why there weren't many Black ppl participating in the winter Olympics. But that's another discussion. Shani Davis, a BLACK speed skater from Chicago is being chastised by the local media for being selfish because he plans to compete for an individual medal rather than contributing his skills to America's speedskating team, thus giving it a better chance for a medal. But, hey, how often is a black guy gonna get a chance to win a medal for ice skating in tights. Go for it, Shani! |

"Real Sports" is as fine a series about sports as there ever been. Actually, "Real" might be in its own right as good as any investigative show. And that's MOSTLY due to Brian Gumbel's journalistic credibility, skill and integrity.
Brian Gumbel - NOT Jane Pauley, Katie Couric or Matt Lauer - made NBC's The Today Show the nation's numero uno daytime news program.
Brian Gumbel is arguably the best TV interviewer...EVER.
And Gumbel has always been more worthy of kneegrow cred that he's been credited for.
I recall through much of the 80's he had an ongoing tiff with David Letterman. Letterman accused him of being arrogant. Gumbel basically said Fuhk him. I ain't going to shuffle and play being grateful to White men because of what I've EARNED the right to do. |

I agree ABM, he is very powerful and he has earned the right to make his commentary regarding the winter Olympics. I don't believe for one minute that he'll be fired from HBO. |

HBO - which, next to C-SPAN, has CONSISTENTLY been the most earnest/credible dayam thing on the tube - would be beyond STUPID to fire someone's of Gumbel's statue simply for doing what any good journalist does - tell the dayam truth.
Gumbel's been the primary media host of several Olympics. If there's ANYBODY who knows what a friggin' sham the Winter Olympics are, he does. |

My family and I were so happy that he won! I think it's terrible how his one teammate was treating him--like his teammate wouldn't have done the same if he had been in his position and knew he could possibly have an opporutnity to win an individual medal. Cynique, did you see him win? If so, did you see the interview afterwards? He definitely "stuck it" to the media!

Hey, Moonie. Shani certainly vindicated himself, didn't he! I saw a re-run of his victory and hope I can catch a repeat of his press conference. I haven't really been following the Olympics that closely but I was pulling for Shani. |

Nels, I tend to agree with your one-word description of Gumble, and his shoddy treatment of the black wife he left for a blonde, blue-eyed "ice princess" certainly taints his image. He also feuded for years with his own mother. |

for what it's worth i agree with gumbel to a point. we've proven ourselves to be exceptional atheletes so being absent in one realm of sport makes for an obvious assumption. on the other hand it would have been more accurate for gumbel to include other races. i mean when is the last time you saw an eskimo in the winter olympics? |

Thank You Chris, but Drudge has that very link on his website along with hundreds of others. Just like I don't rely on only CNN for my televised news, I'm not going to rely on a single online newspaper for my printed news - regardless of the vastness of their coverage.
I don't care if Matt Drudge is gay, I'm not dating the man, I just check his website along with millions of other daily visitors. I want all the news and current events - straight, no chaser.
