I'm writing an article on barbeques, I would like to know what "immediately" comes to mind ? Images ? Smells ? Sensations ? Memories ? Your drunk aunt or uncle or cousin Pooky ? Please reply with first name only or anonymous(if you want), but I definitely need >>>>>age, city and state. You can be as detailed, witty, funny as you want. No rules. you can email responses to me if you like too! jackiejoice@yahoo.com

Thanks !

...a back yard patio...lawn furniture and canvass chairs scattered about...the blare of R&B music alternating with smooth jazz selections emanating from a back porch speaker...mists of charcoal smoke drifting from a grill...the mouth-watering aroma of ribs being tended to by a chef sipping booze from a paper cup...bowls of potato salad and slaw chilling in the fridge...pots of spaghetti and baked beans simmering on the stove...an ice-cooler full of beer bottles and soft drinks cans...the raucous sound of male laughter...the squeal of frolicking kids...the titter of gossiping women...a lively bid-whist game in progress...a gathering of family and friends...full of fun...drunk with love...

Tonya:

I hate to come forward to rescue Cynique, but I must.

Almost every black outdoor cookout, dinner, fish fry, whatever I have been to here in St. Louis there is spaghetti, often with hotdogs in it. You know Black folks eat Post Toasties for breakfast, too even though we all pretend we just eat grits.

Cheap, and everybody likes it.

Where is it that you live?

Well, Tonya, you are obviously so provincial that you think the world ends and begins in your cruddy home town. Around Chicago, spaghetti is a staple at barbecues, along with the other dishes that I mentioned. Broaden your horizons and think past your nose, dum-dums.

I learned the actual cause of niggerritis at a barbeque: 1 part orange juice, 2 parts absolute, and a 120 parts some smoke they call the chronic....

All I can tell you, Jackie, is stay away from the niggerritis.

I'm from Philly, Chris.

This is the funniest one so far
Barbeques??? Food definitly the food. Barbeque chicken quarters (leg & thigh for me) and the potato salad is very (i stress) VERY important i don't like german potato salad or any potato salad with red potatos.
Music is extremely important ( because you have to do the electric slide a few hundred times).
And it has got to be hot with enough alcohol to go around at least 3 times.
My cousin use to always play the most vulgar music at our barbeques and my other cousin would dance like a stripper sticking her butt out to other pic nicers in the park.
Then my mother and one of my aunts would get into an argument because my mother would say someone did not feed their child enough.
that's it girl

In MS, cookouts mean chicken (fried, grilled, and baked), fried fish, baked beans, potato salad, grilled pork from various areas of the pig, grilled deer, ribs, macaroni, green beans, potato chips, cake, fresh fruit (mostly bananas, oranges, and apples).

There's a Jamaican "soul food" restaurant in my neighborhood. They don't sell curried goat, but they sell ox tails, and they are SOOOO GOOD!

It's Big Daddy's on Cascade. The cooks/owners are
Jamaican, but they make more black American
style soul food (which is why I used quotations).
I don't know how they cook them. My husband
usually orders them. I can't eat a whole serving
by myself because it's too heavy for me. They
have curried goat and curried chicken also, but
mostly sell macaroni, meatloaf, baked turkey wings, fried fish, etc.

A really good "Jamaican" Jamaican restaurant is
Kool Runnings on Memorial in Stone Mountain.
When I was pregnant, I would drive all the way
there EVERY day for their curried goat, which is
MUCH better than Big Daddy's. The do the
whole "escovitch fish" thing and other authentic
Jamaican foods.

I am with you, Doberman. Around where I'm from, "pop" is a soft drink. To us, soda is either seltzer water - as in Scotch and Soda, or it's a dry substance that comes in a yellow box with an Arm and Hammer logo on it.
