recently one of the detroit radio stations asked it's listeners what names do they consider to be normally connected with bitchy or very premiscuous people, guess what they where. then they followed that up and asked would you name your kid a "normal" name or do you think that things have changed enough to give your child an ethnic or urban name. i don't have kids but if i did i guess i'd name it after me unless it was a girl of course, but i doubt i'd name her anything that ends with an "a". |

Shaneequa? LaQuisha? And, yes, I think unsual ethnic names still send up red flags to corporate America. |

You would name your son "Doberman"? LOL And I am sure the name "Cynique" wouldn't raise any questions. "Rolleyes" |

Well, obviously "Cynique" and "Dobernam" are screen names, not our real ones. And I'm still mystified as to why you would give yourself a woman's name - even if you do like tennis. |

Don't worry about that. I happen to be a huge fan of Venus and Serena Williams. I have great respect for the way they play. And I knew Doberman was a screenname it was a joke. |

"Shaneequa? LaQuisha? And, yes, I think unsual ethnic names still send up red flags to corporate America." Yeah ANOTHER reason why Black foks need to start and support more of their own enterprises. Because NO ONE should be denied opportunities SIMPLY because racist White foks don't like their names. |

i agree abm, and start good enterprises instead of the same old cosmetic based things that they do (at least in detroit area). by the way the names ; stacy, tonya, britney, angel, and kevin where considered by the listeners to have been the biggest ho's and assholes in association to there names. and i would say that about 70% of the callers also stated that they wouldn't give their child an uncommon name, because they felt it would prevent them from getting employment. |

TONYA??? LOL That's the second time that name has come up in a post today. A character named Tonya was getting it on with the narrator in that excerpt from a book written by Nick Chiles that was posted by Brian Eggeston. Oooh, Tonya. Have you been keeping secrets from us???? |

Second lesson to be learned here: do not emulate ditzy actresses currently into motherhood as a fad, all eager to sport their "bumps" and hang a ridiculous name on their offpsring. Apple, anyone? |

Yeah ANOTHER reason why Black foks need to start and support more of their own enterprises. Because NO ONE should be denied opportunities SIMPLY because racist White foks don't like their names. Deserves to be repeated. Again and again. Best comment on this thread. Do people think that the issue is the name? Funny! There are people, black and white, who don't fucking like black people, don't want us to work for or with them, and would rather see us all just drop off of the face of the earth. Black "Jane" might get the callback interview with the employer who threw out "Laqueesha"s resume, but neither of them are going to get the damn job. The name is not the issue; attaching negative qualities to people identifiable as black by either name or appearance is. |

I'm with you, BW. Anyone who doesn't hire a qualified individual because of a name isn't really rejecting the "name", but the person holding it. It's interesting that "Laqueesha" may be disliked because of her name, while "Hrithik" or "Deepak" is accepted as an ethnic name. |

I dated a guy once name KUJULUVA Choudhury. And I can promise you his resume would be chosen over even something as simple a LaTasha Smith.

By the way, Renata--- I LOVE your name. Both the board one and your real name. Very classy and "distinctive". I really want to borrow your real name for a character in my next novel.

Bangladeshi. Choudhury is a name that can belong to either a Muslim or Hindu family. Bangladeshi guys have a thing for me....but then again, they are (mostly) shorter than the average American. I think short guys just have a thing for me. 31, and have only dated ONE guy over 5'6". What was I talking about before? Sorry...... |
