Oprah's essay contest excludes homeschoolers Host taken to task for requiring 'state accredited' education Posted: February 2, 2006 1:00 a.m. Eastern © 2006 WorldNetDaily.com Oprah Winfrey The nation's leading advocate group for homeschooling has taken Oprah Winfrey to task for excluding homeschooled high-school students from an essay contest she is sponsoring. "Contest open to all legal residents of the U.S. who are currently enrolled full-time (and in good standing) in a public or state-accredited private or parochial school, grades 9-12," states the fine print on a page explaining the contest on Winfrey's website. Despite the restriction, a letter from Winfrey announcing the contest, which will judge essays on the book "Night," says it is open "to high school students across America." Michael Smith, president of the Homeschool Legal Defense Association, or HSLDA, wrote an open letter to Winfrey protesting the policy. "We contacted your show to see if homeschoolers could be included and were rebuffed," wrote Smith. "While we do not believe that your show willfully excluded homeschoolers, the fact that homeschoolers were excluded in the first place is troubling." Ian Slatter, a spokesman for HSLDA, told WND he spoke to an Oprah representative about the policy. "We asked whether or not they could make an amendment to the rules to allow homeschoolers to participate, and they were not willing to do that," Slatter said. According to Slatter, the Oprah organization would not commit to allowing homeschooled students to participate in future contests. "All the research shows that homeschooled students score well above the national average on standardized tests," wrote Smith in his letter. "I'm confident that you would have received many excellent 1,000-word essays from homeschooled students answering the question 'Why is the book "Night" by Elie Wiesel relevant today?'" The deadline for essays to be submitted is Monday. Fifty finalists will participate in a taping of Winfrey's show in late February. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Related special offers: "The Little Book of Big Reasons to Homeschool" "The Homeschooling Revolution" Copyright 1997-2005 All Rights Reserved. Oprah and her staff need to put on their thinking caps. Homeschooling programs ARE accredited. Aren't there about two million children being homeschooled these days? They ought to reconsider and extend the deadline. |

Anybody who reads and knows about schooling knows THAT! What the hell are they doing over there at Harpo Productions? Maybe it's time for Oprah to take a LOOOOONG vacation. |

Doberman - It's just you. Oprah wears tons of makeup, including fake eyelashes. Does she HAVE to do anything? Who knows. The prize for this particular contest is a trip to Chicago for 50 students and their guardian. But you never know, Oprah might give them all a house or something. |

But then again so many other black celebrities have had nose jobs. Vivica Foxx(Starting to look like Michael Jackson) Patti Labelle(I thought she looked better before it). Tyra Banks(Her nose job makes her face look uneven). Halle Berry( Don't mess with perfection)!

Where did you get your info about Tyra and Viveca??? Oprah has not had a nose job or has Halle. The both still have snub noses. Yes, Patti Labelle admits to having had one. |

I heard Halle had one (don't know how true it is), but Oprah swears up & down that she never had ANY cosmetic surgeries done, in fact, she seems to be against them, the major ones at least. |

Cynique, I live here in L.A, and my sister is a nurse for plastic surgeons. I have actually met doctors who have worked on these ppl. And Tonya honey let me tell you that all the major celebrities "speak out" against Plastic Surgery. That does not mean a damn thing! |

I have heard Halle say that she needed a nose job but if she got one why does she still have a snub nose. The same with Oprah. Their noses do not look any better. |

First of all anybody can see Oprah's nose job. Her nose looks much different than when she was just starting out in her career. Halle, does not have a "snub nose". In fact she was in a magazine a couple of months ago and they said she had one of the straightest noses in the industry. Many black ppl now are getting nose jobs that are not exactly "European" but are just thinning them out a bit. |

Sorry, Orpah's wide-nostrilled nose still looks the same to me. I'll have to check on Halle's nose the next time I get a close-up view of her but I really can't imagine her having one of the straightest noses in the industry. |

I just finished watching the late night re-reun of Oprah's interview with Dave Chappelle, and you are right, Serenasailor. Oprah's nose does look like it's been "sculptured". Her show was on hiatus all summer long, just playing reruns, and that's probably when she had it done. |

Well, babe, since a person's medical history is not a matter of public record, I can only speculate about what seems apparent to my eyes. |

You know what? I said to myself recently that Oprah's nose does look like it's been clipped; but since she's been so adamant in her claims that she's never had surgery, I thought I was being silly for even thinking such a thing.... I guess Oprah has me under her spell, huh?: everything that comes out of her mouth is the god honest truth? And I'm not even a fan, lol. Mmm. |

Tonya, Oprah makes EVERYONE with whom she associates (e.g., friends, employees, contractors, partners, etc.) sign a LIFETIME agreement promising never to speak/write about her. So we may never know for certain whether she's gone under the knife. |

Oprah still has her wide jigaboo nose... The kind of makeup you use and how it is applied can make your nose look bigger or smaller or whatever. I think makeup has just gotten better and that's all. Havn't yall noticed how everyone looks great now. At one time you actually had to be beautiful to be considered beautiful... Now makeup does the work for them. I think Halle had a nose job... I just think that she had hers done when she wasn't really known like that. Look at her in Boomerang, and then now... You'll see the difference. I think that it's apparent that Vivica chopped off her Jigaboo nose, and puffed up those lips, and got her breasts done while she was at it. Anyone can tell she had a lot of uneccessary work done to herself. As far as Patti goes... She's already admitted to hacking off her nose.... and I don't blame her because that was one heck of a monstrosity sittin on her face....
