And the nominees are... Performance By An Actor In A Leading Role: Terrance Howard - "Hustle and Flow" Original Song: "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp" - Hustle and Flow And this should be one interesting song performance if the Academy sticks to their traditional presentation of song nominations.

I don't think Howard will win for Best Actor. I place my bets on Philip Seymour Hoffman winning the Actor Oscar for Capote. Hoffman's already racked up Golden Globe, SAG and practically every other major acting award. Hoffman's a good actor. And Hoffman's Jewish. Capote was a wondrous writer. Capote was a favorite of both the Gliterati and the Literati. And Capote was gay. Hollywood is REALLY Jewish and REALLY gay. NUFF SAID!!! Howard might win Original Song award though, if for no other reason but to give Howard and the producer/director of Hustle & Flow some Oscar love. |

I agree, ABM. I believe Hoffman will take the Oscar. But I think the nomination is all the love Hustle & Flow are going to get for Original Song. |

Personally, I wish there had been opportunity to expand Taraj P. Henson's character. I thought she did an outstanding job and had there been MORE of her performance it surely would have been Oscar-worthy. |

Sorry, Babe. H&F was a starmaking vehicle for Howard. Nowayinhell would he stand suffering even the REMOTE possibility of being upstaged by Henson. |

Didn't Eminem win an Oscar for the rap song "Lose Yourself" featured in his movie 8-Mile?? Once Billboard Magazine created a special chart for Rap, it "officially" became a legitimate music genre. And once Chris Rock was recruited to emcee the Oscars, hip hop was moreoreless sanctioned by the maiinstream. The sound track for the movie, "O Brother Where Art Thou?" which featured country and bluegrass music was also a surprise Oscar winner in 2002, I think. |

Cynique, "Lose Yourself" was not laced with profanity. It's message was actually quite INSPIRATION, while that of "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp" is, well...trick(y). Eminem is White. And Howard is not. So while I think "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp" has a chance to win, I'm not sure how much "Lose Yourself" winning the Oscar helps its cause. |

I didn't say that the song from H&F was going to win but I do think "Lose Yourself" set a precedent. And the fact that Howard is not white didn't keep with him and this song from being nominated for an Oscar. |

Who is this? That "authentic" Tonya whose recessive white blood manifested itself in a flat butt??? Talk about the prototype for the long breeds! |

Serenasailor, I think so. And that might explain why "Hustle & Flow" has received such attention and acclaim. |

Either that, or it was just a good inspiring story about an underdog pursuing a dream, a sure-fire theme that transcends color. |

Serenasailor wrote: "I heard it was a white guy who wrote that story(Hustle & Flow). Is that ture?" This is true. His name is Craig Brewer. He is a DJay and a the street-wise pimp from Tennessee. And yes, HE IS WHITE. His gritty portrayal of a pimp turned wannabe rapper in “Hustle & Flow”, was somewhat of a redemption for him. Brewer grew up poor and struggling in the South and living in the fast lane of the harsh reality of street life. From what I have read, he is also a writer and director having made a movie in 2000 called “The Poor and Hungry” (I haven’t seen it). The success of the movie got him an agent, which eventually got him to producers Stephanie Allain and John Singleton. They both took an interest in his screen play for "Hustle & Flow". An from all accounts, John Singleton financed the movie (smart move!). Nobody else in Hollywood would touch it. Fortunately, it has become a highly recognized and critically acclaimed movie (won the 2005 Sundance Film Festival Audience Award and earned star Terrence Howard a Golden Globe nomination for best actor). I thought it was very entertaining and well acted. Although Stanley Crouch dismissed it as another modern day “Coon Minstrel”. I remember reading his review before seeing the movie but I decided to see it anyway despite his blistering assessment. The brother was wrong.

Cynique: "Either that, or it was just a good inspiring story about an underdog pursuing a dream, a sure-fire theme that transcends color." You mean like Fitty Cents' autobiographical film "Get Rich or Die Trying"? |
