...What would you love to see in movie and television programming for and about children of color? Come on all you parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles, teachers, others who care about our kids: What is your opinion about the stuff that is out there and available? What are your pet peeves about Black characters in mainstream children's films? What have you liked? What would you like to see? In the past I have ranted here and on my blog about the dearth of Black characters and stories--and especially about my beef with the whole Disney Princess franchise. Well, I guess before I write about this again, I want to be able to offer strategies for moving forward instead of just complaining. Soooo, whaddyall think? |

When given the chance, do Black writers/film makers opt to produce Black cartoons? Are you aware that there are any number of Blacks giving voice to a lot of the cartoons that are out there? When Black film makers are given the chance, it's always about the booty. I do enjoy the Proud Family and Little Bill. There has been a Black Cinderella by Disney. There has been a story about a White child's beautiful black doll come to life. Overall, I just thank whoever that cartoons are so much better than they ever were. Even I was bored at that goofy shit they used to put out when I was a child. You have to throw out a few examples of what you are talking about.

Just asking what you do and don't like about children's programming. Here is an example of something I have written about in the past: http://blog.lib.umn.edu/perry032/impossible/31days_kidz_.html I love Little Bill; Love some episodes of Proud Family and loathe others. There are African Americans in the industry who do just children's stuff, and I do give props to non-kiddie stars (e.g., Eddie, Ice Cube) who in their later years produce and star in films that are more family friendly. THe Disney Princess franchise I ABSOLUTELY HATE. I have probably mentioned before on this board, but I cannot see how in 2006 we still have not gotten an African or African American princess from Walt's Company. (The Brandy vehicle I do not count: THat was a one time thing and is not part of the Princess Franchise. Walk into any Disney store if you want to see which princesses are part of the franchise.) The closest we get is an animated lioness--Nola, who my kids can't distinguish from Simba. Of course, it isn't up to Disney to produce images of our children for our children. It's up to us. Hence my question: Just what is it folks would like to see? What are you tired of seeing? Etc. |

'Vette, I like Disney's Let's Go Raven. But Disney has a long/sordid history of NOT paying foks. So considering how OFTEN the show is aired, I hope Raven Simone and the other Black cast/crew get their fairshare of the cut from that show. I doubt it, though. And didn't singer Ashanti recently star in a muppet movie of some sort? Let's hope TV1 and some of the other new/upcoming Black-owned/controlled broadcasters (and I DON'T include BET in that mix) will give Black producers, actors and directors the chances Disney and other White owned/controlled media are much less like to. |

I had forgotten about that, ABM--And I did not know this about Disney. What specifically did you like about that program? I did not see the muppet movie, but I do remember it now that you mention it. |

I think Raven is funny in ways that I'm comfortable with my daughters enjoying. She's almost reminds me of a young, Black Lucille Ball. The ONLY foks who really get rich associating with Disney are its major stockholders and the members of its Executive Suite. Disney basically manages its talent via the philosophy of "It's a privilege for your stankin' a$$ to be affiliated with Mickey, BEEEYATCH!!!" |
