Sen. Obama criticizes filibuster tactic HOPE YEN Associated PressWASHINGTON - To more effectively oppose Supreme Court nominees in the future, Democrats need to convince the public "their values are at stake" rather than use stalling tactics to try to thwart the president, said a senator who opposes Samuel Alito's confirmation. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., predicted on Sunday that an effort to try to block a final vote on Alito would fail on Monday. That would clear the way for Senate approval Tuesday of the federal appeals court judge picked to succeed the retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. Democrats fear he would shift the court rightward on abortion rights, affirmative action, the death penalty and other issues. "We need to recognize, because Judge Alito will be confirmed, that, if we're going to oppose a nominee that we've got to persuade the American people that, in fact, their values are at stake," Obama said. "There is an over-reliance on the part of Democrats for procedural maneuvers," he told ABC's "This Week." Sens. John Kerry and Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts are urging fellow Democrats to support a filibuster, citing in part Alito's conservative record on abortion and deference to executive power. Alito's supporters must produce 60 votes to cut off a filibuster; an Associated Press tally shows at least 62. The AP tally also shows that at least 53 Republicans and three Democrats intend to vote to confirm Alito; that is well over the required majority. President Bush said Saturday in his weekly radio address that senators should have an up-or-down on a nominee "who understands that the role of a judge is to strictly interpret the law." Obama cast Alito as a judge "who is contrary to core American values, not just liberal values." But Obama joined some Democrats, including Minority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada and Charles Schumer of New York, in expressing his unhappiness with the filibuster bid. "There's one way to guarantee that the judges who are appointed to the Supreme Court are judges that reflect our values. And that's to win elections," Obama said. Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Del., said he, too, would support the filibuster attempt but agreed that it was not particularly wise. "I think a filibuster make sense when you have a prospect of actually succeeding," Biden said on CNN's "Late Edition." "I will vote one time to say to continue the debate. but the truth of the matter" is that Alito will be confirmed, he said. WHY DO DEMOCRATS FEEL THAT THEY MUST SUPPORT BUSH IN EVERYTHING WHEN THEY HAVE NO POWER. ISN'T THE REPUBLICAN PARTY POWERFUL ENOUGH WITHOUT GIVING "WEAK" REASONS FOR NOT ACTING LIKE THE "OPPOSITION" PARTY? WHY DO SOME OF THESE DEMOCRATS FEEL THAT "THEY MUST PUT THEMSELVES" OUT OF BUSINESS IN THIS COUNTRY?

I agree that utilizing the filibuster to thwart Alito's appointment would be both a tactic and strategic error that could hurt the Democratic now and for years to come. The filibuster should only be utilized to thwart unconstitutional and/or unlawful Congressional acts. And Alito's appointment, though distateful to Bush's opponents, is perfectly within the statutes and spirit of the Bush's rightful presidential powers. Thus, if there are sufficient Senate votes to confirm Alito's appointment, he should be installed into the Supreme Court. And agree that the best - and ONLY - way for the Democratic party to promote its vision of how and where the nation should be directed (assuming it actually possesses such) is to WIN ELECTIONS. Period and EXCLAMATION POINT. With the passing of every day, Obama's looking more and more PRESIDENTIAL. |

Obama got to do what his bosses say. The day they elect the first black president is the day you can get ready to get on the boats-- If they let us get TO the boats. Its going to be Oprah, anyway. |

What a lame attempt at humor, chrishayden. And an even lamer assessment of the situation. You really think that black people would be rounded up and shipped out of the country if one of their own was elected president. And you really think that Oprah could get elected president. Typical of how your erratic mind works. |

Could be. The Chicago River is the only river in the world that has been engineered to flow backwards in order to keep Lake Michigan's water safe for drinking. But lately Lake Michigan has become polluted with all manner of sea life; scavengers like Oprah, and new species like Obama. heh-heh. |

Obama's choice of a wife certainly doesn't coincide with the ranting of Kola and her crew. And most of Chicago's celebrities are not native born, but - they just may be drinking its water. bottled or otherwise. |

We are in danger of scrapping our checks and balances—not just for a few years (as was done during the Civil War), but for good. This is what an Alito win means for the rest of us.

We know of course, that supreme court justices can be impeached. There was a drive during the 1950s to impeach Supreme court justice Earl Warren. This avenue provides a ray of hope, should the supreme court exceed its authority enough to spur people to action. |

Bush is seeking to be the most powerful president of the United States ever. Hell, he will be THE POWER. And although most polls show that voters are not happy with Bush or Alito, the Dems have caved in as always. They have JUST put themselves out of business. With republicans controlling all three of the governmental branches, there will be no stopping him. The Supreme Court put Bush into power and they will KEEP him (or his Brother) in power. The Democrats do not even contest the voting machines that have thrown the last election to Bush. We are in trouble. We can talk about the 50's if we so choose, but that will be nothing compared to what is in store for NOW as a free people. If you can escape America, you'd better start packing very, very soon. |

Chris, I said Obama looks presidential. I didn't say he had a chance of being elected (although, I guess if there is a Black man who has a chance at such, it is he). |

Well. No go on a possible Alito filibuster. 72 senators voted against the potential of such. Even Democrats who have vowed to vote against an Alito confirmation sided against a filibuster. There is a such thing as a good and valiant defeat. Sometimes the message of an effort transcends the result of such. But filibustering Alito would NOT have provided that. |

abm what you said in the first place was dead on and you are right once again. i think that the republican party would try to push condolezza rice to run for president if hillary runs for it. in which case at may be the first time i would ever vote for a republican. you guys also forgot to mention jordan too! he's not from chi-town but that's where he reached his apex. |

'Vette, I think McCain is intimidated by Obama. Maybe he fears being overwhelmed by Baraka's presence and burgeoning power. Maybe he think he'd better muddy Baraka up some before foks begin to seriously consider backing what might a be formidable 2008 Obama For President candidacy. |

Wonder if Obama would consider accepting the vice-presidency on a ticket with Hillary. Would this be a disaster, or a dream team? And what if McCain would then decide to run against Hillary and Obama with Condi as his vice president. Wouldn't that be a trip? Certainly a dilemma for assassination advocates. |

Funny. But I think McCain and Clinton might benefit from what you propose. And Condi might benefit from a campaign with McCain. But I doubt she'd do it because I think behind close doors Bush & Co and McCain hate each other like allgetout. But if I'm Obama, I woudn't touch Hillary even with Bill's dyck (Btw: I'm being both figurative and literal, here.). |
