Pop star Michael Jackson was spotted shopping in a Bahrain mall on Wednesday, hiding his face behind a veil and donning a black robe traditionally worn by women in the Gulf.

He was with three children, apparently his own, who also had their faces covered by dark scarves. An unidentified woman accompanied them.

The pop star, who seems to be settling in the Persian Gulf, was seen leaving Marina Mall in the Bahrain capital, holding a child by the hand. On the way out a back door, he shook hands with security guards.

The woman also dressed in the black robe called an abaya, jeans and a scarf that partially covered her face had the two other children. All three children were wrapped in black scarves and wore yellow shirts and sweatpants or khakis without robes.

Since his June acquittal on child molestation charges in California, Jackson has made several trips to Bahrain as a guest of Sheik Abdullah bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the son of Bahrain's king. He reportedly was negotiating a position as a consultant with a Bahrain-based company that plans to set up theme parks and music academies in the Middle East.

On the mall outing, Jackson wore an abaya, pants, a white shirt and men's shoes. His head and face were wrapped in a black veil and he also wore black gloves.

The veil, abaya and gloves were of a style typically worn by conservative Bahraini women.

The woman asked photographers to respect their privacy and told them they were scaring the children before they left in a white car with darkened windows.

AAJ Holdings Ltd., owned by Ahmed Abu Bakr Janahi, said it wants to hire the 47-year-old Jackson to give advice on setting up entertainment businesses. He reportedly is building a home in Bahrain, an island nation in the Persian Gulf linked to Saudi Arabia by a bridge.

In November, Jackson stirred controversy in the United Arab Emirates by entering the ladies room in a shopping mall. His publicist said Jackson, who arrived in Dubai as the guest of a champion rally driver, did not understand the Arabic sign on the door and left the bathroom when he realized his mistake.

But local newspapers reported that the performer was applying makeup in the woman's toilets in a Dubai mall. Jackson's host, Mohammed bin Sulayem, dismissed the story as rumor.

A very good disguise by Michael.

He already disguises himself when in the States.

I suspect he thinks that being completely covered up in an Abaya would fool the press and give him and his children some peace.

I think he thinks he's a girl. The abaya thing doesn't weird me out. I've seen those and it's hard to tell the diff between the women's and the men's style, IMO. Him being in a woman's bathroom applying makeup weirds me out.

My husband has been in Bahrain once (long flight layover) and he left the airport for a while to look around. He said it's quite nice, but he got stares.

If Michael Jackson really were in a WOMEN'S bathroom APPLYING makeup in an ISLAMIC nation, you would hear no more about him. This is SERIOUSLY illegal and dangerous.

I doubt that in a country with such medieval ways, Michael would cause himself, his kids or his HOSTS this kind of disgrace/trouble.

This is something HE WOULD NOT HAVE GOTTEN OUT OF.

People seriously need to read up on these Islamic nations where half the population (women) are invisible and WHY.

In some of those places, they push morality on everyone. In some other places, men, and especially rich men, get a lot more leeway than is given to other people. In Afghanistan, for instance, male homosexuality is rampant, but because they're men, it's overlooked. I wonder if this same principle would apply to MJ?

You got that right! I’ve been to Bahrain numerous times and never want to go back. Women in America have no idea how blessed they are to live here rather than living under the oppressive and crushing weight of Islamic fundamentalism. When I was in Saudi Arabia, I noticed you always saw men, rarely did you see women. When they were out, they could only go shop for food and basics and then back home. Dating, talking to strange woman or socializing with women (e.g. the mall, coffee shop, etc) does not exist! The women are covered from head to toe in black. You can only see their eyes and with some dress wear, a type of black fish net material covers their entire faces. It was very eerie

When I was in Bahrain, I do recall a young American serviceman who was caught in the car with a woman “who was not his wife” (you cannot be in the company of a woman you are not married to –it is against the law!). The woman was a Filipina as I recall. She was working as a maid or something like that (in fact, I’ve never been to a country were there were no Filipinas since they are outsourced around the world as indentured nannies and maids). They have various check points all over the country with armed police/military guards. They made the mistake of leaving the security and neutrality of a non-Islamic compound. When the guard stopped them, it was discovered that they were not married. Done deal. The woman was promptly kicked out of the country. The American military and Embassy had to get involved to not have the American serviceman expelled from the country.

I also recall one day a woman in Bahrain was arrested by the police and sent to jail. Her crime? She was somewhat weaving and the police stopped her and “smelled alcohol” on her breath. I have no idea where she got the alcohol but she was toast. And I also recall reading about a woman who was sentenced to be stoned to death in Saudi Arabia. Her crime? Adultery. This was around 1988 when this happened. I couldn’t wait to leave.

So no, Michael Jackson has to be very careful about what he is wearing. Trust me, when the word got out about what he did, the authorities in Bahrain had a talk with him.
