I just read the biography of Strom Thurmonds daughter. I believe her name was Essie May Williams I'm not to good with names. But it was a really good book. Have you guys read any good books lately. If so what? |

Read the book a while ago. Yes, her name was Essie Mae Washington-Williams (which I'm surprised you don’t remember since you said you read the book) grew up in a racially segregated world in the 1920s, until one day she found out that her mother was actually her Aunt and her mother's sister Carrie Butler her real mother (imagine the shock!)!
Another shock came in 1938 when she discovered that her father was not black man but white. Not only was he white but he came from a rich and powerful white Southern family and he had been secretly supporting his once black mistress and their daughter. Something that would have cost a black man his life for the same exact thing.
Strom Thurmond was a man known for his strong racist ideals (although Trent Lott and white conservatives conveniently ignore this), based on what he wrongly thought was best for black and white people. And his idea for a perfect America did not include race mixing! Something southern white men of his generation were known for as long as it did not include the indiscretions of white men with poor black women. However he did not practice what he preached and his daughter Essie was living proof of his double standards.
I did note that this book could have been an angry and bitter book by a woman who had lived in the shadows for all of her 70 plus years. She knew she was in fact Strom Thurmond's first born child but she was never able to publicly stand at her father's side because of who he was and what he stood for.

She wasn't angry because she is in DENIAL.
She stated that her mother wasn't raped by Strom, and infact states that her mother and her father WERE IN LOVE.
Her mother was a young teen-aged girl working as a domestic for Strom's family. Strom, I believe, was already in his twenties.
Even her OWN children and grandchildren say that she is FOOLING herself.
That's why you see no bitterness.
The old lady thinks that her's is a LOVE STORY.

Yep! And Trent Lott will still continue as the unchallenged representative of that state in congress until another Republican closet pointed headed sheet wearer will replace him. |
