My father lives in Atlanta now. Actually, my whole family is from Atlanta. Is Atlanta a good city to live for black people? If not, what are the best cities in the U.S? |

It was. I lived there 6 years. Now it seems like all the cities that people escaped from to go there. My friends still love it though. It's so overpriced now that financially, I'd say nah, it's not so hot. |

I love it here. It's safe enough in my area that I can walk a mile after dark with no problem. Of course, I live in a predominantly middle aged homeowner area. They ain't causing no trouble. Pricewise, compared to smaller towns, it's expensive. But it's cheap compared to other large cities. My uncle lived in downtown Chicago in a one bedroom apt. SEVENTEEN years ago that was more expensive than the 2 bedroom I live in now. However, if you live in Midtown, Buckhead, Virginia Highlands, Downtown, they kind of rival the prices of larger cities. It's VERY easy to get around on the train. New laws state that all bars in the city of Atlanta must close by 2 am, so the parties are moving to other areas, like Decatur, Gwinnett County, which is cool for most Atlantans, except those in Buckhead and Midtown where all the bars/clubs are located. African shops are owned by Africans or Black Americans who've lived in Africa, so you don't have to go and get bootleg crap from people who don't know a kente from a daishiki. No one cares how nappy your hair is. If you've never had a relaxer, you can actually find shops that specialize in locs/Afros/braids, etc. If you work somewhere professional, women don't have to worry about their hair looking "too ethnic for corporate America". I love it here. |

It depends on your personal tastes. ATL has been OVER saturated for years if you ask me. Everybody and their step mothers moved there. But the cultural activities, night life, etc. is pretty good for the south. The school system is questionable LOL. As far as homes, get a place outside of the perimeter. Orlando is a good city for young upwardly mobile Blacks--but it lacks culture. I hear Houston is pretty good too. Michael T. Owens http://www.michaeltowens.com |
