This is so hard core I had to post it. I certainly have an opinion that I will reserve at this time (it will be forth coming -trust me) but I would love to hear some feedback from the readers of this board especially the black females. PLEASE TELL ME IT AIN'T SO!!!!
Black Women and Blonde Hair
Where do I start?
The Black woman’s obsession with blonde hair has reached new and frightening proportions.Walk down the streets or just take a look in any Black fashion magazine and you’re bound to notice an array of Black women sportin what Blacktown calls “piss colored hair”.
Now ordinarily I would have no problem with this as I was a blonde once myself, but as I dig into the reasons why Sistah’s won’t let this trend go, I become upset and disgusted.
Make no mistake about it, Sistah’s are going blonde to imitate the white women they know Black men desire, but that is no excuse.If we are to call ourselves proud and strong Black women, then we must look like ourselves and act like ourselves.Imitating white women not only makes us look like fools, but keeps white supremacy going as we continue to show and teach our people that white is not only right but more desirable.
When I open a magazine today I am stunned at the lengths Sistah’s are going to to attain the look of white women and with absolutely no shame to their game.Long, straight, flowing down to their ass weaves are not the exception anymore but the norm.From Beyonce to Remy Ma to Mary J, blondest blonde is clearly the look of the day.
Now, I am sure many will scream that it is just a choice and Sistah’s can do as they please and going blonde doesn’t mean they wanna be white or look white.I on the other hand know better because I am not an outsider looking in and judging but rather a Black woman and thus I know why we do what we do.
Whether we will openly admit it or not, we are indeed attempting to emulate the look of white women because sadly we know that this is what our men like.They like long straight flowing hair and that is why we straighten ours.We also know light hair is more attention grabbing and desired amongst all men of all races and that too is why we lighten ours, as do most women, white women included.
However, the extremes we go to to attain this look only ends up screaming to the world how self hating we are.Mary, Beyonce and Remy are just a few of the Sistah’s who have gone extreme blonde and extreme long.And it doesn’t stop at hair color.Each of these ladies have been known to wear a contact or two in their day as well.Remy Ma… totally losing her goddam mind actually sported blue contacts, as did Lil Kim.What excatly is the world suppose to think when they see a Black woman with artificially straightened, fake blonde hair down to her ass with blue contacts?
I really don’t think we are grasping the enormity of what we are doing.I don’t think we really know how we look to the world, our men or our children.I think maybe, just maybe if the Black woman said “screw Black men” and instead did what she pleased with hair, then maybe they would have no choice but to accept it.
Maybe if we didn’t obsess over our hair so much in front of our your children, they wouldn’t either.Maybe if we loved our locks our sons and daughters would grow to love them as well.Maybe… just maybe, if we loved ourselves that would be the fashion trend of them all.

Well, obviously, she has a lot of time on her hands to stretch out her neck at EVERYBODY when she is in public.
I just don't have time for people or women like this. All of this hate regarding OTHER PEOPLE/WOMEN.
Women play with their hair and their make-up. This goes out, that comes in.
I don't care. Not everybody wears what everybody else is wearing either. It depends on where you live in America. It really does. Where I live I see all kinds of styles. From very short like Alec Wek, to everything Afro-centric. I see the round-the-way-girls, sporting blondes, reds, different colors, BRAIDS.
I don't care about these HOLLYWOOD fools! They're ALWAYS doing something to catch the eye and to sell a product.
I do like the more and more women take care of their feet and body now-a-days. That's all been pushed by today's stars and magazines as well. |

Yawn. Why do people who write aricles like this always act they as though they have just descended from a mountain top where after a year of meditating they have learned the true meaning of life? Who cares what they think about this subject that has been discussed ad nauseam. Why are white women having their lips enhanced? Why are all women having boob implants, and furiously working out to achieve firm bodies? Why are women of all races going blond and wearing hair extensions? Cuz they damn well please. And what is anymore outrageous than paying big bucks to spend hours having long strands of artifical hair braided into your short tresses or sporting synthetic ropes of dreadlocks when you are not a Rasta?? And don't forget have teeth bleached and vaneers added or getting laser eye surgery. People do what they do, not to please nay-sayers but to make a statement or gain attention or feel better about themselves. So whoever wrote this article, just go take a flyin leap. |

Apperently her message is spreading (and fast) because not only are MANY, men & women, starting to write about what Kola's been preaching, they're starting to sound like her too. IMO, a lot of women (perhaps not all) choose that color because they think that's what men find attractive.
I've had numerous stylists tell me I needed to bleach my hair. Not only would I not damage my hair like that, but I don't even find the color attractive. The most I would do in coloring my hair is maybe add some medium brown or red highlights. My hair is an extreme jet black, and lighter colors just wouldn't suit me. I'm all about LOOKING natural, even if unnatural things are done. (Hence my choice to texturize rather than straighten my own hair.) |

Many people "feel better about themselves" if they work out and shape up, or dye their hair blond "to get attention" or maybe even to "make a statement" to judgmental, self-righteous people who want to impose their standards on others. Really? I completely disagree. Back in the days (when I was lost) any time I wore my hair in a weave or long braids, the number of black men asking me for my phone number increased by at least double. The Ironic thing about it is, I look my best when I where my hair short like Halle Berry's. Long hair makes me look trashy. Really Short Hair makes me look waaaaay more professional and it frames my face better.
Now, if you're talking about a boyfriend or husband, then yes I agree. But for a single women looking to settle down, there's a HUGE amount of pressure to wear what men like even if it doesn't flatter her.

I think ppl in this room are afraid of stateing the obvious. We as African Americans have deep seated issues about the way that we look. This stems from when we were brought here as slaves. When we were brought here the Europeans told us that we were not beautiful, and we believed them. Heck, we had no choice! That was the Europeans way of justifying there ill-treatment of us. If we did not look like them then we were not human being. That resulted in black ppls self-esteem issues.
Black ppl got the notion that the more we looked like Europeans the better we would be treated. And in many ways that was true. So that is why you see black women wearing blonde weaves, putting in contacts, and claiming that there great so and so way white, Indian, Chinese, etc. That also is the reason why black men praise and worship women of other races. The issues that we as black ppl have with ourselves is sick. Shame on us for believing the white man's lies. |

No, serenasailor, Americans simply have the freedom and the money to experiment with their own PERSONS.
It really is not as deep as you're trying to make it. Hairstyles come and go. If you don't like to color your hair or to straighten it, so be it.
If you read up on Japanese society, the youth there are always changing their hair and their style.
At one point, the rage was going to the salon to "afrotize" your hair. That's right! Japanese youths were spending money to make their hair resemble afros. They were into Rap, country and rock music. Now, they are back to dressing up like geishas. The white face makeup, clothing, shoes and all.
Japanese parents call them "aliens" because they don't know what culture their youth will be representing next. |

Blonde just doesn't cut it, and it certainly isn't the benchmark. The (tennis) stars that they are, the Williams sisters are a prime example of that - out of place with those sad weaved blonde doos that wouldn't make anyone blush by any sense of the imagination.
If one isn't into black women, then they need only look at the latinas. Those dark haired hot latin honeys have a lot more in common with many topnotch sisters (regardless of their phenotype) than any white women will ever have. And...at least they've got a little more ass to show for it. Just a few more fries to go with that shake, please.
Of course, it's what's inside the head that really counts. There's no need shacking up with a drop dead gorgeous beauty when she's trying to poison your dumb ass by adding anti-freeze to your apple Martini.

I agree with your assessment of their weaves, brotha. But was it necessary to put down the Serena williams' of the world while propping up the fat & sweaty butted J-LO's? I'm sure there're better ways a smooth, savvy black man like you could've made that point.
BTW, Latina women have a vast deal more in common with white women than they do Sisters.. don't even act like that ain't true. Not even the "topnotched" Latinas are lucky enough to have much in common with us.

About this thread...
"WIGS" were created by the Ancient Egyptians, who were black Nilotic people from PUNT, Nubia and Cush.
They kept their heads shaved (both male and female) to protect them from sand mites and wore elaborate "braid" wigs. The Oromo people spread the use of these wigs as "cosmetic ornaments" to Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia and Tanzania, and within 100 years---they were all over Southern Europe (Greece), the middle east and the African continent.
WEST AFRICANS and the "Bantu" tribes of Southern Africa were the only people in Africa who never wore wigs.
Adornment Vs. Caricature
All races of humans have always worn "adornments"----African women have braided jewels in their hair, colored their hair, wore wigs, mud, sticks and animal fur in their hair for thousands of years.
But the AFRICAN STANDARD of beauty and femininity---even in EGYPT and Ethiopia----was always the SHAVED head of a female with jewels, shells and paint around that head.
This bald headed look symbolized "FERTILITY" and only the upper class elite women could afford to keep their heads shaven and decorated at all times.
At no time anywhere on the African continent was "long flowing hair" a standard of feminine beauty.
So we've always had "adornment"...BUT
The DIFFERENCE between adornment and caricature IS....adornment is only done for two reasons---
(1) to look like one's own people
(2) to please GOD.
TO former slaves and former colonized Africans.....WHITE PEOPLE are the "Gods" now.
Black Men worship the "images" that White men have fed to the world.
Black men have not created their own separate image-making media to insert their own images. They simply accept and use the white man's.
Black Men internalize and idolize these images, because they hold POWER, RESPECT, ADMIRATION, HUMANITY and are COVETED.
Whites are considered "more human" to black people...than blacks are. And the lighter black you are, the more human you become to blacks.

Kola, I think you greatly overrate the media as the source of our problems. Black girls would be much more "happy, cheerful and confident" if they grew up in stable, two parent homes, with loving fathers, and without physical, emotional and sexual abuse. Black men would have greater self-esteem if we were simply more successful as a people, and not perennial failures--the lowest group on the ecomomic/political totem pole. And frankly, I could care less aboue black men's self esteem as long as we were economically self-sufficient and able and willing to defend ourselves. |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you seem to be saying that white womens' happiness, cheerfulnees and confidence comes from their being celebrated in the media, and presumably, black womens' lack of those qualities stems in large part from their lack of affirmation in the media. While I do think that media affirmation is important, I think that perfecting the black family is a much much bigger priority.

Before I sign off on this volatile subject, I would simply reiterate that kola will not and cannot impact on my life in any way, but for her to utilize half-truths and persuasive rhetoric, to advance the worst case scenario of black American women is the height of arrogance. Kola's wholesale indictment of black women is nothing but an attempt to build a case for her self-serving cause and provide an outlet for her need to be aggrandized. There are millions of black woman all over America, of all ages and colors and stations in life who do not fit the profile that kola has cleverly contrived in order to create a need for her leadership. Her words are an insult to them and she speaks with an authority which she has not earned. And for her crew of clones to stand by and swallow this swill without question is even sadder. When they look in the mirror do they see the female kola boof described? Admittedly, things are not perfect in the black community, but all kola does is describe the problem and then resort to histrionics while offering ways to throw fat into the fire. Not surprising. This is a quixotic woman with a spotty romantic history, a woman who publicly moons over and throws herself at married "ABM", yearning for his return to the board. tsk-tsk. How does she have the nerve to scold others??

I'm glad you are starting to realize that the issue of colorism and all of its ramifications is not new. You and others act as though you discovered it! If I act blase about the subject, it's because I've been around long enough to observe that the more things change, the more they become the same. The misguided vanity of black women is currently being re-hashed by a new wave of people who see the obvious and think they've had a great revelation that compels them to warn others about the detrimental effects of black folks who embrace the standards of the dominate culture. This "awareness" comes in cycles and it re-surfaced waaay back when Madame C. J. Walker was accused by some of encouraging black women to straighten their kinky hair and lighten their skin, and the last spurt occurred during the 70s and the "black is beautiful" movement which fizzled out about 15 years later, when Jheri curls and perms came into vogue, while Ambi bleaching cream advertised itself a moisturing preparation. And you'll pardon me if I am not a zealot for a cause that, if you had your way, would exact revenge on certain people for the sin of having light skin by expelling them from the race. BTW, I've never thought of you as a sinful, wicked child. To me you are a conniving, self-absorbed woman. And who wouldn't be misled about your sentiments for ABM, considering how you remind us regularly that you cry over him and wish you hadn't "run" him away from the board. sob-sob. |

Some of these Nigerian flim-flams are so outrageously creative, that people have put up websites DEDICATED to them. They pretend to go along with the scam artist by stringing them along, all the while putting up each response and email on their websites. |

My grievance with her is that she cursed at me and attacked me the first day I came here! I said that I am a dark skinned black woman who has not experienced the woe is me crap she tries to peddle and she ripped into me. That is my grievance. But the AFRICAN STANDARD of beauty and femininity---even in EGYPT and Ethiopia----was always the SHAVED head of a female with jewels, shells and paint around that head.
This bald headed look symbolized "FERTILITY" and only the upper class elite women could afford to keep their heads shaven and decorated at all times.
At no time anywhere on the African continent was "long flowing hair" a standard of feminine beauty.
So we've always had "adornment"...BUT
The DIFFERENCE between adornment and caricature IS....adornment is only done for two reasons---
(1) to look like one's own people
(2) to please GOD.
TO former slaves and former colonized Africans.....WHITE PEOPLE are the "Gods" now.
Black Men worship the "images" that White men have fed to the world.
Black men have not created their own separate image-making media to insert their own images. They simply accept and use the white man's.
Black Men internalize and idolize these images, because they hold POWER, RESPECT, ADMIRATION, HUMANITY and are COVETED.
Whites are considered "more human" to black people...than blacks are. And the lighter black you are, the more human you become to blacks.
Black women, watching their whole race of men "bow down" to the White man's images---are constantly informed that it's their fault that black men are black in the first place---their womb is the thing "cursing" black men...and that they are INFERIOR, UNWORTHY, Less loved by GOD and UGLY.
The Black women, while holding their newborn children, believe these things so deeply...and Black men REINFORCE these beliefs....so that the children know from extremely young ages that they come from an inferior race that is "too dark" and ugly.
ALL WOMEN...all women on this planet...receive their ideals and notions regarding their LOOKS from #1--their fathers; #2--Uncles, Brothers and other MEN in their environment; #3--the MEDIA.
When a black man walks by a group of little dark black girls and doesn't acknowledge their presence, doesn't smile adoringly----those girls immediately receive the message that they are unworthy and unattractive.
Little girls place little value on what their MOTHER says about how they look.....unless MEN back up what the mother is saying.
WHITE WOMEN (not all, but at least 70%) are so "happy", "cheeful" and "confident"------because the entire society AFFIRMS their beauty and their humanity. THE MEDIA is their constant publicist. She doesn't stand up for herself, because she wants to be...whatever he WANTS her to be.
She's a fool, and because she's the ROOTS of the tree and is WEAK....the tree rots, producing bad fruit.

i almost cried when i read this post because about 90% of it is so true and really hits home.
while i feel that not all black women straighten their hair or add blonde colors to their hait because of self hatred (some do it jsut to change up the style) it's still important to celebrate our own standard way more than we do. I know i'mg etting sick of seeing black women with blonde weaves. Even if some of us are jsut doing it for style, it still sends the wrong message to little blakc girls and black boys and people in general. Even if you are doing it for style, it still gives the falst impresison that you want to be white(even if it's not true).
It allows black men and other races to ask this question "even black women don't see themselves as beautiful so why should we"
Even those of us who are wearing blonde hair and weaves just for the style (and not to look white) have to get rid of our own selfish sense of style and look at how this is effecting the community and affecting black children's self esteem. I get sick of seeing serena's ass with blonde hair all the dam time. It's ok to change up every once in a blue moon like for a few days or so but to sport blonde hair and straihgt hair and weaves all the time is nauseating.
and you're right...black women have always been a lot of talk.....we claim to be so strong but let the whole world use us until there's nothing left to be used anymore.
