This was written by the very controversial and master provocateur Stanley Crouch. I had to post it. Question: Do you agree..???
Why I use the word 'Negro'
By Stanley Crouch
Some people are particularly disturbed by my use of the word Negro as opposed to the latest fashionable label. I am not bothered by such people, but I am disturbed by the reliance on cosmetic identity that has become so important to black people over the last 35 or 40 years.
More than a few people were actually taken in by the obsession with naming that came out of the Nation of Islam, when Malcolm X, chief heckler for Elijah Muhammad, inspired many to begin responding to the word "Negro" as if it were the dirtiest of insults.
The argument was that "Negro" separated black people from their African identity. It did not acknowledge the greatness of Africa, wonderful Africa, that lost paradise where everything was perfect. It did not recognize that black people had not always been slaves - that they were, in fact, a separate nation descended from kings and queens.
Hmm. No one, of course, ever considered that if most of the millions of black Americans really were descended from kings and queens, one would have needed a lot more land than Africa provided to support all that royalty. Millions of kingdoms definitely present a challenge.
It was, at best, cult thinking. But it was also a way of getting people to think of themselves as perpetual victims who were oppressed at every turn. That seems to me the greatest impact of believing that the history connected to the name Negro was all second-class travail and injustice.
Some 40 years ago, Malcolm X said: "You're not an American, you're a victim of Americanism."
That's too crude and simpleminded. But the crude and simpleminded are not unusual when the subject is the Negro. While such statements might sound good on a podium, they miss a great and substantial truth.
Black Americans have had an enormous impact on American history. Almost every important effort to better the position of people in this nation has its roots in the Negro-American story. Consider the history of the labor movement, for one.
Being called something other than Negro will not better the state of the people who now walk around challenging others to call them African-Americans. They think that to be proud and effective, people with dark skins of a certain pedigree need to know they are connected to the grandeur of Africa, the fountain of civilization. Hogwash.
Clearly, knowing that they are Africans has done nothing special for Africans themselves, as we can see in the massacres in Rwanda during the 1990s, the many brutal African dictatorships and the abundance on the continent of backward ideas about women, slavery and a number of other things.
People can call themselves whatever they want. But the challenges facing this nation and its darker ethnic group will not be solved by anything other than deep thinking and hard work. Pride comes from accomplishment. Cosmetic nonsense will not get it.

I'm sorry: Stanley Crouch is a toadying asshole.
Every now and then, he picks up his little poison pen and starts making remarks carefully designed to piss off other blacks, and to make the neocons cheer. To which we can simply say that America--for the most part--has hardly done shit for us, unless your name is Michael Jordan, Bill Cosby, Condom-Sleeza, Colon-Bowels, or STANLEY CROUCH.
And of course, one would not dare raise one's voice about how Africa got to be the cesspool that it is today. Could it be the West that Crouch is so much in love with? And then there's Iraq....never heard Crouch raise his voice about that, either.
There's also that little snide comment he makes at the end about "deep thinking" and "hard work". Isn't that funny coming from Crouch? He wrote this little screed which in itself is NOT an example of deep thinking. And what's so screwed up about Crouch is that clearly, he knows better--he just wants to suck ass for whitey's nickels and dimes. That is the ONLY reason why he keeps on using the word NEGRO. Period. Full stop. |

Stanley Crouch is a polemicist. And in the black community that is a no-no because it demands that in the interest of not airing our dirty laundry, we have to put a sock in our mouths. Sometimes I agree with Crouch, and sometimes I don't. But to me, it builds character to have to listen to what you don't want to hear sometimes - especially if there's a grain of truth in it. |

Interesting perspective. I like that. I've never agreed with playing the race card and calling people names because I did not agree with their view point or perspective. Just debate the facts and leave the name calling to those who lack the articulation and literary skills to generate a compelling and strong debate.

Africa is NOT a cess pool...or anywhere near it.
The part that the American MEDIA shows you is a cess pool.
I still, maintain, along with posters Anunaki3600 and AfricanQueen that the people in Africa...continent-wise....are much better off than the black people outside Africa, including those in the United States.
Just as CRYSTAL can attest that you would be shocked to drive through South Central L.A. and discover that's nothing like the "gang movies" and "rap videos" constantly stinking up the airwaves (I personally couldn't believe how many BEAUTIFUL neighborhoods dominate S. Central and how it's no more dangerous there than it is in the Wilshire District)....the same is even more true about Africa.
Now SUDAN by itself, is another story.
That's the very worst place in Africa.

I love negros. Harriet Tubman was a negro. So was Malcolm X. Before a certain time in Black history, that was the operative term and what they referred to themselves as.

One day I overheard of my mother's friends utter the most insulting phrase when asked about going up to harlem at night:
"I love my people, but not at night."
Bullshit. How is harlem any worse than the rest of NYC at 11:00pm? I was there several times, AFTER hours, and it's no different than being in DC or Trenton at 11:00pm.You just gotta know what the hell you are doing.
But then that lazy housewife never goes anywhere anyway. With all the money her physician husband has they never use any of it to travel. They stay in their "5% black" gated community. So how does she know what Harlem's like at night?
I don't understand how my mother stays friends with her.-_-'

There`s nothing wron with the word negro, if you`re speaking spanish. When translated to english This word becomes "black", in Swahili it becomes "-eusi", Yoruba- "dudu".
Now, why are people so arrogant and lazy that they can`t use words in their proper linguistic contexts.
Growing up in Kenya I thought that the negro was a different people with straighter hair and lighter skin. You almost got me fooled there.
African Americans have been ignorant of themselves and their history for too long. Happy to exchange misery in Africa for slavery in the "new world". I hear some say "what`s in a name?" Answer- Not much.
But now the continental Africans are all over the place. Use us to learn more about yourselves,and don`t remain ignorant. It`s nice to see that some are evolving from Niggers to negros to blacks to Afro_americans to African Americans and with time I hope the word American will be excluded.
Take note- You have such a great impact on the world that when you call yourselves negroes, Many Europeans, eg Swedes translate this to "Neger", and I ain`t no neger, I´m a Kamba, an Ibo, etc
