I'm all for not taking a person on face value, for questioning an individual's credibility and disputing their ideologys. And most certainly, I enjoy a good word fight most especially when one is truly a challenge to the other and both are capable of bringing their strong suits to the ring. In fact, I've been know to engage in such activities myself, but can you say OVERKILL? These continuous threads about the same boring subject so reek of promotional overload and a really BAD marketing ploy. It has gone from being BARELY humorous to just plain tired. So why don't we turn the tide AND the attention and discuss something different. Anyone have an opinion about Supreme court nominee Samuel Alito and the confirmation hearings? Or perhaps, the latest book you may have read, since this is the AALBC. Why don't I start. Just completed Gayl Jones' book Eva's Man and am midway through her novel, The Healing. An absolutely brilliant author! I was amazed that I'd never heard of her before now, most especially since its told that she was a black woman of many emotional quirks. I was also interested in learning that her work was criticized by the AA community for being too stereotypical. With respect to Alito, we're stuck with him, no matter what a good show they try to put on. | ||

Hey Tonya, I started with Eva's Man first. I found it to be a quick read (finished it in one night). Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe White Rat was her collection of short stories? Either way, I have really enjoyed her writing. Haven't been able to get my hands on Corrigadora which was her first release but I'm told the writing is exceptional and really put her on the literary map. Sadly, the breadth of her talent was overshadowed by her personal problems and her mental instability. She would be mid-50's today and its said that she's reclusive, won't interview, and has spent time in and out of a mental institution after the death of her husband during a police standoff. No one has a clue if she's continued to write or not. | ||

I started reading "The Year of Magical Thinking" by Joan Didion because it had received such rave reviews, but half-way through it I got tired of the author's descent into denial about the death of her husband. Lately I've become so impatient with authors! Now, I'm getting ready to tackle the latest biography of Sam Cooke, the soul singer whose roots were in the Chicago gospel scene and I'm hoping the author will capture the era as well as the essence of Cooke. As for Alito, I was amazed at the way he introduced his family when he first took the stand. He sounded like he was doing a stand-up comedy rountine. In fact, he seems rather detached from the whole procedure, and a tad arrogant. He also seems a little tenative in regard to the abortion issue, and he'd better fall in line with the right-to-life crowd before they turn on him. | ||

Interesting suggestion by Ms. Babygirl. I have no problems with it. I must admit that I have found a seemingly “ongoing personal war” of words and insults vacillating back and fourth between about four different individuals who post on this board to be tedious at times. I have no problems with a dynamic, healthy and heated debate but much of it is no more than personal attacks and insults rather than staying on point about a particular political or socio-cultural issue. I have also found this toxic un-natural obsession with “skin color” (light vs. darker) to be extremely un-nerving and depressing. I’m not suggesting there are no issues with some blacks about this hyper sensitive and debilitating subject, but there seems to be certain individuals who cannot pass up the opportunity to rant or denigrate someone in regard to the color of their skin(as if they had a personal choice with their skin color). The language used is typically racist, silly and very divisive. The seemingly uncontrollable obsession of this subject says more about the individual than the subject itself. I’m not sure what is driving this unnatural preoccupation with skin color but it certainly is not healthy nor productive in any sense. Yes, Samuel Alito will be confirmed. The Republicans have the congressional numbers to confirm him and drive the final nails in the coffin for control of the three major bodies of American government (White House, Congress and the Supreme Court). They now have the political might to forge ahead with their conservative political agendas since they will control the national administrative, policy and judicial making entities. The scales of the Supreme Court will be solidly tipped to the right and the impact of their rulings will affect America for decades to come. The over turning of Roe vs. Wade will be their first "ultimate trophy kill" since conservatives have been working tirelessly and diligently for years to undermine a woman’s right to choose. The next target will be affirmative action policies and programs. Next to abortion, this is the other non-compromising hate item of the conservatives hit list. Bar none! I also picked up the Peter Guralnick biography (Dream Boogie) of Sam Cooke. I also had to spring for the new CD release “Sam Cooke Live at The Harlem Square Club” to listen to while reading the bio. But I have to finish the Laurence Leamer book, “The Kennedy Men” (fascinating read), along with Chris Albertsons definitive biography of Bessie Smith first. God, I love that book! I bought the first addition in 1976 (still have it) and purchased the updated version last year. | ||
