Any thread a while back got me to thinking. Should we as African Americans feel solidarity with other non-whites? Should we allow them to use the Civil Rights struggles as a blueprint for their struggles? If so why? If not why? |

"Should we as African Americans feel solidarity with other non-whites? Should we allow them to use the Civil Rights struggles as a blueprint for their struggles? If so why? If not why?"---Because the world keeps changing and we had better change with it! Black Americans can not ever be like White people and think the world will never change. We have to accept change and make these people our friends. As Blacks have moved up in this country, they are not producing as many children as they once were. That means that we are fast approaching being a minority among minorities. There is strength in numbers. Never think that you don't have to extend a helping hand or a warm smile just because someone else is different from you. That person may one day be you or your children's supervisor. You may have once looked down at them in the past---but look at them now! Don't be left behind, Black folks! |

A minority among minorities? I hope more African people move here and change that. |

As long as the misdirected term "African-American" continues to be a useless misnomer, solidarity is pointless. Even more so, the fact that the majority of so-called black Americans are of mixed heritage and more, the argument for solidarity will become even harder to justify over time. Africa is not "America" (i.e., the U.S.), so get over the urge to further divide and socially implode. |

I don't think that the Civil Rights struggle is so much used as a blueprint as it's seen as an achievement/ pinnacle in the entirety of activism for equal rights. There's still a lot of progress to be made and a lot of changes to be had. Because, like the old thread said, minorities are still NOT equal with the majority. I mean, so long as I can sit here and say, "That racist event happened to this minority. Would it have happened if the minority were of the majority?" For example, take the 60+ year old poor Black man beaten by 4 white police officers in New Orleans. Would he have been beaten up if he were wealthy and white? I doubt it. And that's what I'm talking about. If you replace the Black man with another minority and New Orleans with another city, you have the same situation. So isn't it in the interest of all minorities to work together and form a giant front, one greater and more unified and stronger and more just than that of the majority, in order to fight for completely equal rights? So NO ONE has to argue that something happened because of their race? I mean, I understand the urgency and long-overdue need of true equality between Blacks and Whites. But I think the issue is applicable to several other minorities, even if not in the same degree, and I feel that when the racism issue is only applied between Blacks and Whites, it's like saying, "Racism is only to be addressed and truly destroyed between Blacks and Whites. Other races are not as important/ do not deserve the same privilege." That's like saying, "It's okay for those races to suffer injustice because they weren't here first and their struggle wasn't as hard." Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that exactly how the Whites considered the Blacks? That it was okay for Blacks to suffer injustice because they were nonentities, that they weren't entitled to the same rights? I dunno. I'm not saying all minorities should lose their sense of culture and individuality; however, I am saying that minorities should join together to challenge the majority and bring light to all of their injustices [with the continued oppression of Blacks on the forefront]. And I'm not saying other minorities should just jump on the Civil Rights bandwagon; they shouldn't just be "tacked on." I think each minority's culture differently affects each minority's fight against racism. Thus, the continuing fight for Equality should recognize that ideal- that each minority is individual but suffers from the same basic plight. The fight for Equality should also recognize the various levels of injustice each minority has had to suffer through racism as well as combine the injustices under the idea that all were committed through racism. More to come when more is posted. For now, I think that's about it. |

Nels: So Irish-Americans, Italian-Americans Jewish Americans (many of whom hold dual citizenship) and German Americans should shut up, eh? So we shouldn't have St. Patrick's Day, Columbus Day, or Strassenfest eh? Whoops? I forgot. They are white. It's okay for them, bad for us. |

Bad analology chrishayden. Why should all hyphenated white folks shut up when they ain't sayin nothin? Except maybe to call black folks African-American because it's better than "nigger." Calm down now, boy. Get it together. Work hard on your reply so you can pat yourself on the back for saying something clever(?) And be sure and make reference to my age. (I don't know where a young whippersnapper like Nels gets such ideas. Guess he's not as enlightened as the decrepit chrishayden.) BTW, unhappy kwaanza, blow-hard. |

Chris -- "Whoops? I forgot. They are white. It's okay for them, bad for us." Ireland, Italy, Israel and Germany are defined countries. Africa is not. Others are not searching for an identity, only "black" America is, or seems to be. When is the last time you heard someone promoting themselves as European-American, as in the "continent" itself? White vs. Black alone just doesn't cut it. "St. Patrick's Day, Columbus Day, or Strassenfest eh" Let's see what "black" America (oh-um) Africa(n)-America dreams up next.
