i was just wondering why hate crimes are more punishable than regular killings....arent they doing the same thing? not starting this topic to get into a big debate about it but i was just wondering what the people here think of that and if anyone can come up with a just reason as to why this is.

For the same reason that premeditated murder is considered worse than killing someone on the spur of the moment. The person had hate and malice in their heart in advance of committing their crime and they planned and plotted to do harm. And instead of trying to resolve the issue within themselves or seeking some sort of counseling, they went out and inflicted violence against a random person, because of their ethnicity, religious beliefs, etc. And again, that's different than knowing a person, or someone having done something to you that justifies some sort of revenge. Hate crimes target completely innocent people who fit the hater's established profile. Anyway, hate crimes are a federal offense and you can read more about them online. Try the FBI website.

Hate crimes are not more punishable than regular killings. How can you get more than a death sentence (which you can in many states for Capital Murder?) |

From wikipedia In the 1990s, legislators in many U.S. states penalized hate crimes much harsher than previously. Few of these statutes make it more likely for a murderer to be given the death penalty when his crime is a hate crime. While some claim that these hate crimes laws exist because women and certain minorities have been victims and require special protection, other supporters of hate crime legislation say that hate crime laws exist because crimes motivated by hate deserve harsher punishments. California Penal Code section 422.6 offers a wider interpretation of hate crime, defining it as "No person, whether or not acting under color of law, shall by force or threat of force, willfully injure, intimidate, interfere with, oppress, or threaten any other person in the free exercise or enjoyment of any right or privilege secured to him or her by the Constitution or laws of this state or by the Constitution or laws of the United States because of the other person's race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, disability indicates that many states have hate crime laws Also from Wikipedia Hate crimes do more than threaten the safety and welfare of all citizens. They inflict on victims incalculable physical and emotional damage and tear at the very fabric of free society. Crimes motivated by invidious hatred toward particular groups not only harm individual victims but send a powerful message of intolerance and discrimination to all members of the group to which the victim belongs. Hate crimes can and do intimidate and disrupt entire communities and vitiate the civility that is essential to healthy democratic processes. In a democratic society, citizens cannot be required to approve of the beliefs and practices of others, but must never commit criminal acts on account of them. Current law does not adequately recognize the harm to public order and individual safety that hate crimes cause. Therefore, our laws must be strengthened to provide clear recognition of the gravity of hate crimes and the compelling importance of preventing their recurrence. Accordingly, the legislature finds and declares that hate crimes should be prosecuted and punished with appropriate severity." [1] Indicates that such crimes are not merely crimes against persons but are committed to intimidate and put fear into whole groups I would thus guess that hate crime laws are enacted because legislators are trying to make this a society of equals rather than one in which certain groups are free to terrorize others |

It is becoming increasingly apparent that ol LoLo graduated from the same school of journalism that Prettybabygirl did; The University of Lies and Deception whose chancellor is Kola Boof. LMAO. This trollola who supposedly works for the NY Times never seems to have anything to do but frequent this board and provide another voice for the "journalist" who created them. And all of the protests about Cynique being obsessed with kolanut will just roll off my back because the real obsession here is kola boof's compulsion to saturate this board with her alter egos, something that provides an outlet for her her prolific creativity and helps to fill her empty hours. She's a world-class hood-winker. I salute her. LMAO. |

It's like when you murder a cop, you are not just killing a man but are destroying a symbol of law and order. Crimes committed against individuials for no other reason than a hate for their ethnicity is offensive to a democracy. These are the principles of a civilized society even if they are abused by the powers that be. Without structure and restraint there is anarchy. |

Misty, I think Chris' wikipedia article provides much of the justification for hate crime legislation. And I would add that this country has a history of racially-motivated mob action, retaliation and vigilantism. So one hate crime can incite 2, 5, 10 or more related crimes. That's also why extra efforts are made to thwart hate crimes. |
