Young Blacks at Greater Risk for STD’s Despite Having Safer Sex by Lorinda Bullock NNPA National Correspondent Originally posted 12/20/2006 WASHINGTON (NNPA) – A new study says even though Blacks ages 18-26 are practicing safer sex than their White counterparts, they still are “nearly 25 times more likely to be infected than White young people engaging in the same behavior.” The study, titled “Sexual and Drug Behavior Patterns and HIV/STD Racial Disparities: The Need for New Directions,” shows Black youth in this age group aren’t drinking, smoking or using drugs as much as Whites their age, but statistically they have a greater chance of having sex with someone who has an STD because the prevalence is so high in the Black community. “The interesting thing about the paper is that it’s saying for African-Americans, it’s not about your behavior. It’s about probably you’re partner’s behavior and whether your partner has a sexually transmitted infection,” said the study’s lead author Denise Hallfors. Hallfors, a senior research scientist at the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation in Chapel Hill, N.C., said her findings were based on the National Longitudinal Survey of Adolescents. Nearly 9,000 young people, Black and White, were surveyed in 1995 and data was collected again in 2001. In addition to asking the young people about their sexual behavior, Hallfors said they were also tested for STDs. Then, researchers classified the participants in 16 different behavior “clusters” ranging from what Hallfors said was, “everything from never had sex, never did any substances, to people who sell sex for money.” She said for young Blacks who tended to have the least risky behavior—fewest sexual partners and little or no drug or alcohol use—the chances of them catching an STD was eight to 10 times higher. “For African-Americans even in the lowest risk, most conventional group—instead of 3 percent for Whites, it was 20 percent that had some kind of HIV or STD,” Hallfors said. This news was especially disturbing to 22-year-old Howard University student Shari Logan. “Immediately I thought that the odds are always against us as a young, African-American. You’re trying to do what’s right and you’re saying, ‘Okay I’m not going to be stupid and have sex with everyone, I’m still just going to kind of play it safe and use a condom’ and yet you’re still—you’re chances are greater? So I thought wow, what can you do except maybe just complete abstinence?” Jennifer Kates, Vice President and Director of HIV Policy for the Kaiser Family Foundation, said Logan is right and that abstinence is the only 100 percent effective way to prevent STDs. “The Centers for Disease and Control, National Institutes of Health and most organizations recommend if you choose to have sex, use a condom correctly every time. So the message (of the study) is not a message that what you’re (Black youth) doing is not what other young people might be doing sexually, it’s that if you choose to have sex you have to have safer sex. The chances of a Black young person coming into contact with somebody who’s HIV positive when they have sex are higher,” Kates said. Hallfors said there were a number of reasons why it’s easier for a young Black person to come across a partner with an STD. “African-Americans have sex with other African-Americans for the most part, Whites have sex with Whites for the most part. So that combination of segregated sexual networks and then African-Americans there’s more of a crossing over between high risk groups and low risk groups and the combination of those two things tends to make for higher rates of STDs.” She also said a disproportionate number of African-American men who are incarcerated and going back and forth from the community to jail, does have an impact, as well as the male-to-female ratio among African-Americans. “There’s too few men for the number of women. And what that does is it encourages multiple partners for men—concurrent partners—and those kinds of things are very risky when it comes to sexually transmitted diseases,” Hallfors said. Jennifer Augustine is the director of the HIV/STI division for Advocates for Youth, a Washington-based organization that according to its Web site, “champions efforts to help young people make informed and responsible decisions about their reproductive and sexual health.” She said she’s encouraged by the fact that young, Black people as individuals are engaging in less risky sexual behavior, but they have to take it one step further. “They also (need to) go that next step of talking and communicating with their partner to asses what’s their past sexual history. Who have they engaged in sexual activity with? Have they always used a condom or other means of protection when having sex? Have they practiced unsafe sex?” She said having these kinds of discussions prior to sexual activity can also improve the sad statistics. “It really goes to show that while you can do things as an individual to protect your own behavior, you really need to know what is going on with your partner as well and kind of what’s going on in the community.” While Augustine applauds young Blacks for engaging in less risky behavior, Logan says it still doesn’t comfort her. “We’re still at risk,” she said. “It just makes me think gosh, how great is STDs and AIDS in our community that even when you’re not doing it you’ll still get infected? So it doesn’t make me feel that much better, it just makes me more aware of how sexually active we are as a whole.” Both Kates and Hallfors agree that there is a need for a massive campaign to get people in the Black community tested. Kates said the Kaiser Family Foundation has done a number of media campaigns with Black Entertainment Television over the years to reach out to this vulnerable group. Hallfors said providing universal and free testing to the people who need it most at the most accessible locations like local churches, beauty salons and barber shops, was among the list of recommendations to policymakers. She had another recommendation, this time to young, Black people: “If you’re an African-American, and if you’re at all sexually active, you should not think ‘Hey my behavior is very conventional, I go to church every Sunday, I don’t have lots of partners, I don’t do drugs or drink alcohol.’ That doesn’t mean you’re safe. Because if you’ve ever had sex with somebody… the rates are higher.” http://wilmingtonjournal.blackpressusa.com/news/Article/Article.asp?NewsID=11713 &sID=3 |

Again. I think we're inching ever so closely to having to resort to MANDATORY HIV/STD testing and some form of (hopefully HUMANE) quarantine systems. |

Scary is an understatement. Back in the olden days when I first became interested in men in a sexual way, I was so leery of everyone and everything - and there weren't even any diseases to speak of going around. If anyone ever caught a VD it was because they were fuckin errrrybody!!!! The very first man I ever had sex with was my husband and that was back in the 70's. If what was going on now with the AIDS and the STDs and the gangsters and all the other crazy shit - my Black ass would have stayed in the house and I wouldn't have met my husband at all. I'd be trying to stay a virgin. Or using my dildo. (Hmmm I wonder if you can lose your virginity to a dildo???) Anyway, I'm dead serious. Sex is nice but not worth DYING about. I'd be cummin with my hand-held shower head or something. Black women today need to be VERY careful. All of us! |

BB123, It's not very difficult to draft and institute mandatory testing and quarantine systems. The TUFF parts will be legislating and executing them. Is it a good idea to do these things? Perhaps. Provided we're willing to living in a country that's very different from the world we currently live in. But then, most everything that has happened in the wake of 911 has proven that perhaps we are. |

ABM, how exactly would folks w/STDs be "quarantined"? I think part of the message of this study is that even if folks knew of another person's status, they may still engage in sex with them because of such things as perceived lack of alternatives. What needs to happen is greater access to treatment, at earlier stages. Mandatory testing and other efforts will mean nothing if people cannot get treatments. |

Yvettep, Perhaps some more modern-day methods of how foks dealth with Black Plague and Leprosy in prior generations and centuries. I agree early-stage treatment is as vital to remedying this problem as testing/quarantining. But you treat something you don't know about and can't control. |

Another study showed that uncircumcised males and their partners are at higher risk for contracting HIV and AIDS and other STDs. I don't think that there is a correlation between this report and the study about the higher incidence of STDS in the black community but it should certainly be discouraging for sexually-active young people. If it ain't one thing, it's another. It's enough to make them work off their energy in reading a book, or something. Too bad young girls don't know about the benefits of a vibrator. I guess. The dilemma is that vibrators will raise their expectation when it comes to the real thing. Decisions, decisions. Always decisions! |

I really doubt a word of what the article says. I think there's a hidden message in it: NIGGERS, PLEASE STOP FUCKING. WE DON'T WANT YOU TO BREED. The mass media has been saying these things for decades, before any of us on here were even born. Befoe AIDS or herpes, there was syphillis in the twenties and thirties, and Southern cracker politicians used "facts" about the "Negro syphillis rate" to scare whites into rejecting integration and race-mixing. It's the same old shit, wrapped up in new clothing. Don't buy it. |

I agree, Shakespir. Studies can be manipulated to prove anything, especially when it comes to the subject of sex because people lie about their sex lives. Extrapolation of numbers is how Africans can get away with saying that black Americans have a higher rate of HIV than they do. In reality this is not an equitable comparison. |

ABM, I saw the above comment and was too dismayed to respond but your comment has inspired me to throw my 2 cents in. I make my living as a researcher, using both qualitative (e.g., open ended interviews) and quantitative (e.g., statistical models) methods. It is heart breaking to see how so many Black people are so quick to discount research based purely on superstition and distrust. Note that I am not saying that science has not been the cause of some egregious wrongs against our communities. I am not saying that some level of distrust is warranted. But I do wish folks who scream anti-science would better inform themselves about scientific methods and processes. (And I am NOT saying that you, Shakspir, or anyone else here has not done this. This is meant as a general observation, sparked by your comment.) We need to be vigilant against scientific abuses. But we also need to be able to analyze studies such as these on scientific as well as historical, ethical, and other merits. Tonya, thanks for posting this. I recall a while back you posted some other pieces from scholarly journal articles with similar reactions from some. Trust me: It is not easy to get the results of scientific studies published. They go through a rigorous process of peer review where every facet of your assumptions, sample selection, statistical analyses and results are picked apart by anonymous (most often) reviewers. No, that does not mean that scientific studies are beyond reproach. But the process--especially over time as studies like this inspire replications--is not as open to the ability to be able to "show anything" than some folks seem to assume. |

How can all of you who scream racism at the drop of a hat, not see in this particular study, the possibility of an ulterior motive grounded in racism. You can't have it both ways. If you scoff at the studies that demean the intellect of black school children why are you so accepting of any of these little papers that represent nothing more than a microcosm of what may or may not be true in the entire population. |

And good news for the women of America. Maybe. The latest study about the effects of estrogen therapy, which incidentally changes from study to study, now show that estrogen increases chances of getting breast cancer when previous studies showed it lowered the rates of it. Some studies show aspirin decreases the possibility of stroke but other ones contradict this, claiming aspirin can cause strokes. There's are always studies out there in the medical world, most of them funded by pharmaceutical companies looking to introduce a new drug on the market. Even physicists are now challenging Einstein theory of relativity because it doesn't jibe with a quantum physics study that claimes things can be 2 places at one time. When my kids were little me and my mommy friends used to laugh over the alternating benefits of bananas. One year the were good for babies, and the next year they weren't. Ol Cynique gotta live up to her name, folks, but I'd be the first to say that studies are here to stay. They are self-serving. |

CYnique, I never said that science is infallible. I just lament the instant anti-intellectualism of much of the critique of science. Part of what is built into the scientific method is the idea of falsification. Nothing can ever be "proven" to be "true." Hypotheses can be shown to have varying degrees of truth value compared to other, alternative hypotheses. I do not happen to be one who screams racism at the drop of a hat. And by definition, all any study can do is make inferences about a population based on a sampling of that population. And much scientific research is not funded by Big Pharma, but by places like the NIH and NSF--In other words, by yours and my tax dollars. Even more reason to get educated about scientific research instead of taking a stance of automatic distrust. But just my opinion, of course. One of my major research interests involves "lay theories"--also known as "folk knowledge." So I would be the last one to discount the wisdom of elders and personal experience! |

I have always had great respect for your opinion, Yvette, because you got mucho credentials in additon to being a person of great integrity. My attitude has something to do with my age. I've seen so many things debunked over the years, that I retain a healthy amount of skepticism. And so many times in the realm of my world, what I see is in complete oppposition to what is being concluded in a study, and contrary to popular belief, the world that I live in is not a fairy land, but is as much a snapshot of the world-at-large as the groups isolated by a study. Even so, I could be a victim of the "exception-to-the-rule-syndrome". And since this board thrives on debate, I always like to challenge what some people assume is carved in stone. And so it goes. |

Yvettep, I don't argue that one should flatly believe EVERYTHING someone who happens to have a PhD says. But I think it's intellectually LAZY and DISINGENUIOUS to WHOLLY discount something for which you're made NO valid, earnest effort to disprove simply because you disagree with or are dismayed by the conclusions or arguments that are being asserted. Whatever BrownBooty. Don't get out here and catch some shit you can't get rid of believing that taking a piss cures venereal diseases, because it doesn't. It might help in rinsing out the urinary tract in the penis of a man, but women don't piss from their vagina, so taking a piss won't cleanse anything there. The Mexicans have an old wives tale that if you douche with lemon juice in water it will prevent you from getting pregnant. And taking a piss CAN prevent STDs. Here's how: When your partner asks you to give him some skins, just say that you want to try something different tonight. Straddle him and PISS on him. Then roll over and go to sleep. Likely won't get any STDs this way. |

Thanks, MZUrine. That chimp sure does look like me. The only difference is that I am a lot darkerskint than the chimp and I also have a much bigger, flatter nose and bigger nostrils and more hair on my body. Apart from that, I look just like it. |

Yet again, a serious and important thread is sabotaged by Cuntique and Mizzury with their infantile pictures of chimps etc. Grow up you gray-haired, wrinkly-vagina-having ageing Negro bitches. You two are the true trolls of this board! |

Well, since Mz-Urine has an antibiotic-resistent strain of anal gonorrhea and oral and vaginal Syphillis - she sure is qualified to preeeeeeach about STDs. She's in a very good position to give a talk about how to GET STDs. Mz-Urine, a subway train done just disappeared up your snatch! The train driver done thought the inside of your snatch was the Holland Tunnel StinkyPoo - Don't start no shit, and there won't be no shit. In other words, if your stank ass can't stand the heat, then get the fuck out the mutherfuckin kitchen. Don't come with the pissy mouth bullshit about how C & me have sabotaged this thread. Just STFU!!!

Mzuri opened her mouth....and one of Cynique's decade-old turds came tumbling out. Interesting. So you two gals used to suck each other's turds out during sex. |

LMAO. I love observing Ickygeek melt down. It's so easy to push her buttons. All ya gotta do is remind her of what a sub-human varmint she is. (Looks like "you-know-who" needs her prozac perscription re-filled.) |

If you seriously think that posting pictures of cute chimps is "pushing my buttons" then you're possibly even more stupid than I thought. Begone, troll. |

Yes, but this is my favorite snap of you StinkyPoo. You look so lovable in this one. Chowing down on them greens. I wonder if they're collards.

Didn't you already post this cute little chimp pic? It does look like it is eating collards, just like so many African Americans, they love their collards! |
