I had already read a book about the Nichols Organization ("Queens Reigns Supreme") so this program on BET didn't have any surprises for me--
"New Jack City" was not fantasy--it was real and reporting on events that had already happened--massive and sophisticated drug organizations that whacked even law enforcement officers, took over whole sections of the city led by men in their 20's flaunting wealth only flaunted by powerful white folks.
The shame of it all.
I had moved in my thinking from being outraged to being saddened--saddened at the waste of black youth and destruction of a black middle class neighborhood.
And it ain't over yet. Youngsters will see the tale and only the middle part and not the tragic ending--I remember a local drug lord (in St. Louis a drug lord is on the small scale except for the killing department--they don't make that paper but they drop them bodies)whose favorite movie was "Scarface".
"Didn't he see the end?" I asked.
The people who knew him only shrugged in reply. He didn't get killed but is locked away forever. |

I saw the show about Tookie and the drug dealer in California but I missed last week's show. I really like the series but I wish BET would do something positive - a business show featuring successful entrepreneurs or something. |

I think they already do something with the Black Enterprise people--
But you have to be kidding. This is BET that has on all the bootyshaking videos. Why the hell would they suddenly try to do something respectable?
Young people ain't interested in that. They dig crime and killing and scandal just like adults are. Watch your evening news. All the killings and rapes up front--all the real news buried at the end. |
