Also, notice how in these threads you guys praise light-skinned women. But degrade a beautiful dark-skinned woman like Mary J. And no matter how plain, unattractive, or ugly a light-skinned woman is you assholes will deem her beautiful but will find any flaw in the most beautiful dark-skinned women.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, "Beauty is sooooo subjective."
I don't think MJB is dark-skinned. When we're talking dark-skinned, for me, Naomi Campbell, and others of her complexion, Brian McKnight, Jermaine Dupri, Missy Elliot, Taye Diggs - they all come to mind in terms of who I would consider dark-skinned. But not MJB. She has a medium-brown skin tone, but not a dark brown, and I happen to think she IS attractive, but the blonde hair doesn't do her justice. |

After reading the interview about how she views herself as looking like a camel, I must agree. But the thought wouldn't have ever crossed my mind if she hadn't put it out there. I don't typically think of people's faces as looking like animals. |

Where you been Urban-Scribe? Glad you've dropped in, especially since you saved me the trouble of responding to Serenasailor inasmuch as you said pretty much what I was thinking. 
Mzuri, animals have always been one of the things that come to my mind when look at in a person's face and I always thought Mary looked more like as turtle. LOL. But I love Mary J. for being able to make fun of herself. I've always found self-deprecation an endearing trait, because it usually bespeaks of a person whose modesty is unwarranted. |

Mary J didn't leave herself open no more than anybody else did. Halle Berry openly calls herself ugly. And Beyonce has said many a times about the physical aspects on her body she would like to change. However, I hear very few Black Americans call these women out on anything.
Yes Cynique there are alot of things I disagree about her image. However, Beyonce wears Blonde hair as well. Yet, nobody talks about how ugly and stupid it looks on her(which it does). |

I guess you call yourself "nobody", serenasailor, because every chance you get you are dragging Beyonce over the coals, all of which makes me think you have a secret crush on her. Actually, body-wise Bey is a good image for BW. But her overall image sucks. The skin bleaching, the fake blonde wigs. |

WHatever else you say about her, Mary J has achieved the ultimate feat in the entertainment business: staying power. This last album was the first one of hers that I ever bought--I thought she really matured as a person and a vocalist and it really showed on that album. If this is indicative of what she is further capable of, then she probably has another 5 or 6 albums in her.
WHen BK and some of these other women have been around as long, then I might be impressed. |

Mary J's biggest asset is her soul, not her body or her hair. The life she has led is reflected in her singing, be it heart-rending or gut-wrenching or a celebration of life. She draws on something deep inside of her when she sings and because she keeps it real, her music stirs the emotions. Beyonce is one-dimensional because she hasn't had a lot of trials and tribulations. She performs a song. Mary J. experiences it. |
