San Francisco Police Arrest More Blacks Than In Other Cities

SAN FRANCISCO -- (AP) - San Francisco police arrest African Americans far more than officers in California's other big cities.
Black people in San Francisco are arrested for felonies at nearly twice the rate as in Sacramento and Fresno, and three times the rate as in San Jose, Los Angeles and San Diego. They're arrested four times the rate in Oakland, according to the study, published Sunday by the San Francisco Chronicle.
Police Chief Heather Fong said the imbalance may stem from the city's "soft on crime" reputation, which draws felons from the suburbs.
A task force in the sketchy Tenderloin neighborhood found that more than 60 percent of African Americans arrested last year were transients or people living outside of San Francisco. |
