Today my personal appearance was ridiculed. These are the precise comments that were posted about me, presumably after somebody here Googled me and found my photograph.
"Damn,this LOLA sure is damn UGLY.

It's true--Nigerian women are some of the ugliest in Africa, with their splotchy, acne-ridden complexions, pie-plate faces and coarse looks--and on top of this, they are quite crude personally. Especially Ibos. They can't hold a candle to the Wolof chicks of Gambia, or especially those Cameroonian babes."
These comments were made by Shackspir and Eastwest.
Is this what the Discussion Board stands for? Bashing of African people and comments that seem laced with a revulsion for blackness?
I thought there were BLACK people here. No?
If you think I am ugly, fine. I didn't ask for your critiques on my appearance. You may have seen me recently on The View with Rosie O'Donnell where I am trying out to replace Star Jones. I notice that none of you wrote in then to complain that I was ugly! |

Lola I saw you on The View and you are very beautiful. Unfortunately you would have to be male for most here to accept you with a dark skin tone and still see attractiveness. I also did not believe that you were the real Lola I thought people were pretending to be you just as several people like Igbogirl try to clone Kola Boof now that she no longer posts here. I hope you are not Kola pretending to be Lola! Do you know Kola? You appear to be the kind of beauty she praises the most.

and somali women are FOINE.From the dark skinned
ones to the lighter skinned,women from the Horn

Excellent point. This is very true. I did see your picture Lola and for whatever it is worth -I do not find you ugly or unnattractive. Just my opinion......

This implies that because they're "black" they must appreciate your looks. I don't see why non-Nigerian people should be under any obligation to find your look attractive.
Now if Nigerian men with features similar to yours expressed the same views, I would agree that they have self-image issues. |

As a Nigerian myself I have to say that Ms Ogunnaike would get similar treatment from many Nigerian men as she stated she does from African American men. Nigerian men favor what they call "light" women. The difference being only that their idea of "light" is somewhat darker than what you'd define as light-skinned here in the US. That's because overall, Nigerians are relatively darker than African Americans. So, over there, somebody like Sanaa Lathan would be considered a darkskinned woman. It's a known fact that Nigerian men favor these brownskinned women over women who are very dark, like Ogunnaike. That's why so many Nigerian (and other African) women use bleaching creams these days. They're trying to achieve that "brownskinned" "American" look. They also really, really value long hair - be it natural or weaved. So, Ms Ogunnaike would lose out on both counts because she appears to have short hair and she is dark to boot.  |

I would think that that would make you a Nigerian American. Play semantics all you want, an American born child of Nigerian parents, grandparents, etc. is NOT of the same ethnicity (physical differences) or culture of the descendants of slaves in the United States (whether you want to call them black, African American, Afro American, Negro or whatever else).
So once again, these people are under no obligation to find you attractive. |

Lola: you must know, because I have heard many Africans say this, but being African Americans is not solely being born black in the U.S. or even worse gaining American citizenship, as least not be me [this is not to say that you are not African American by the way!]. African Americans, I believe, are generally the descendants of slaves....although, I do think there are New African American, like yourself, who are comfortable, I suspect, in among both Africans and what is traditionally understood as African American circles. In this sense, I am including the question of place of birth and culture [though many Africans claim that African Americans dont have one]. Just my 2 cents! |

If this is true....I guess they're not as poor and you claim they are....maybe misguided but definitely not poor. Do you have any proof ? Ticket stubs ? You sure it wasn't 800 nairas(Nigerian Currency)?
