LAUGH FACTORY BANS DAMON WAYANS: Comedian used N-word after Kramer incident led to its removal from the premises. EURweb.com December 6, 2006 *Looks like Damon Wayans has become the first casualty of the Laugh Factory’s newly-instituted N-word free zone. The comedian used the term 16 times during his 20-minute set Sunday night and was promptly banned from performing at the venue for the next three months, reports the LA Times. Wayans’ act referred to the racist rant of "Seinfeld" star Michael Richards that caused the N-word ban to be instituted. "I'll be damned if the white man uses that word last. …This is part of our culture now...don't take that from us," Wayans told the audience. The actor was also fined $320 for his routine - $20 for each time he used the word. The syndicated TV show "Inside Edition" sought the opinion of director Spike Lee on the Laugh Factory’s N-word ban. The director told the syndicated television program: "I think as a people we have to try to eradicate that word." But rapper Jay-Z, who uses the word in his lyrics, disagrees with a formal ban, telling the show last week: "I'm against that, I'm all for freedom of speech." He added, "You have to fix the people that have hatred inside their soul."

I don't really give a care but this type of ban is unconstitutional. Next thing you know comedians won't be able to use any curse words, then no words and then people won't be able to speak at all. I don't care how offensive it is, I believe in freedom of speech. Let the audience decide for themselves what they will tolerate. |

This is crazy....they are so worried about the N-word but dont seem much at all worried about the black incarceration rates, racial profiling, the poor quality of education in black schools...they dont care to put an end to the aids rate...we have SO MANY more problems facing us than the n-word. they see these bans as somethng to appease us with rather than take care of real problems. |

I suspect that Damon Wayans was pushing the envelope, actually hoping to get banned in order to make a point and create further controversy. Banning the use of the word nigger/nigga is like trying to eradicate cigarette smoking. They both may be hazardous to your health, but it's all a question of personal choices and individual rights. |

i don't know how i feel about that, i don't think it should be something illegal but the people who actually know to use it everyday all the time couldn't afford it if they had to pay fines for using it. i don't actually use it myself ... except for on thursdays and when it's raining for some reason. anyways i still don't like it when white people use it and i hate for anyone to give them amunition to do so. |

If the club (and other places) institutes a racial slur ban, I think that would be great. But they shouldn't prohibit the N-word, and still keep honkey, wetback, greaser, chink, etc. as acceptable to use. No person wants to be insulted because of their race/ethnicity. |

”If the club (and other places) institutes a racial slur ban, I think that would be great.” ### Thank you Mzuri. I agree. I’m glad they created a No “N” Word Zone. I hope every other club does the same. If your act depends upon the use of inexcusable racist language, then I suggest you revamp it. The word is disgusting and racist and no amount of shrill excuse making and howls of First Amendment Rights violation apply! No one is going to be put in jail for using the word. Feel free to call your self a “nigger” and use it gratuitously amongst other lovers of the word. It’s legal. Do your thing. But the club has a right to set standards of not allowing inflammatory racist epithets. Contrary to the belief and shock of the “N” word purveyors and lovers, IT DOES OFFEND PEOPLE –WHITE AND BLACK. It’s a lesson that Richards learned the hard way. And the mindless weak double standard of using it need not apply! ”But they shouldn't prohibit the N-word, and still keep honkey, wetback, greaser, chink, etc. as acceptable to use. No person wants to be insulted because of their race/ethnicity.” Good point. I like that also. But watch the moronic feeble attempts at justifying the use of the word and condemning the ban as a free speech violation and an assault of creativity. Their passionate defense and love of the word is amazing as it is tragic.

Wayans recently attempted to obtain copyright ownership of the word "nigger". Didn't nobody tell him that "nigger" has been in the public domain too dayam long for a nikka to be able to do that? |

well, as i said before, this hue and cry about racism is nothing but a proxy for a discussion on institutional racism. |

so true...there are so many more important things facing our community than a word...yes its offensive depending on how the person used the word and especially when its sued by a different race and i cringe when i heard it said....but still...its a word...there are far more important things challenging us. |

Did you all hear the piece with Paul Mooney and whassisname (KRS-1) on NPR talking about this issue? If I come across the link I'll post. I found it interesting, especially the whole generational thing. But one key point was when Mooney said "funny is funny" and went on to tell a joke that he normally would have told with the n-word without it. It was (still) hilarious. |

"you should ahve seen that interview with paul mooney where he said that he sees where the n-word needs to stop being used." Good. More positive news. Now if we could just get every black American on board with banning and refusing to use a racist epitaph (and the stupid double standard Negroes hysterically defend) that was created to degrade and dehumanize us, it would be a very positive step.

We (black folk) must be the laughing stock of the world. we got 'Slick D*ck' Jessie Jackson calling for a ban on the word with his nasty adulterous ass... damon wayans of the notorious wayans clan that has built their careers off of black, bugger, and nappy hair jokes... and ahhhhhh paul mooney the most confused black man alive, who chronically dates mixed Nordic women who barely speak English and look like big bird.... what a circus we have here can we finally get black people (black women) of integrity to speak publicly on this issue? Maxine Waters? I don't think so. |
