..to call you the n-word? All this talk about it has gotten me to thinking. I am curious what others' experiences have been. I think the first person to call me to my face was a White woman driving in a car in a strip mall parking lot. I was balancing walking on the curb and she called me n***** out of her open window, telling me to get out of the street. I think I was too stunned to tell my mother when she came out of the store. I think I was about 11 or 12 at the time. The most memorable time was when my junior high language arts teacher was explaining how we should use the context of a story to figure out big words we do not know. She told the class that if the sentence did not make any sense using our guessed word, we should stop and say to ourselves "Hmmm, there's a nigger in the woodpile." All the other kids (I was the only Black kid in the class) began laughing nervously and looking at me. At this point she paused and explained, "Now, by 'nigger,' Yvette, I do not mean you. A nigger is simply any bad person." Now this time I did tell my parents. The next day they marched up to the school and had a talk with the principal. The next year the teacher "retired." Ahhhh, memories. |

On a one-on-one basis, I've never been called a "nigger" to my face. I've been with a group that was addressed as "you niggers" in a confrontation with some white kids. As teen-ager on a summer job, I rolled my eyes at a red-faced co-worker hastened to explain that she didn't mean anything when she recited the "eeny, meeny, miney, moe, catch a nigger by his toe," litany. After that, she couldn't be nice enough to me. When the word nigger came up in grade school during the reading of Tom Sawyer, or was it Huck Finn, the teacher primly explained to us that this was how people talked back then, and the integrated class shifted uneasily at their desks. |

I remember being called "nigger chillens" by Whites foks when I was young. But then it was 60's in Mississippi. *shrugs* Later, when we moved to Chicago, I recall being called nigger when I might have been passing through White neighborhoods (all of which are, ironically, now mostly BLACK and/or HISPANIC). And when I was a teen, White cops would regularly pull up along side my friends and I, rudely hand search us and ask something exact or similar to "So what kind of trouble are you niggers trying to get into today." Nigger was often supplemented or complimented by coons, darkies, (derogatory) boys, spades, etc. |

Ms. Y - You were right not to tell your mom because she probably would have stalked that bitch and burnt her house down. I've always had a very sheltered life being born into a military family, my parents were very protective of me. I didn't even know there was a civil rights movement during my childhood until I was grown. And I've lived here in Texas since I was twelve and there's not much overt blatant racism here that I know of. Obviously I'm not referring to the entire state of Texas, just here locally. There's mostly Mexicans here and so you rarely even encounter a real white person. While on the job about ten years ago I was a union official, and I fell out with a white girl over some union stuff. I heard that she was referring to me as a "little nigger bitch." But she would have never dared to say that to my face because those are fighting words and I have been known to fisticuffs. I have slapped the shit out of some people and right there on the Army base too. Anyway, other than that one episode with the union girl, no problems with anyone calling me names. |

My first recollection of being called the n-word was by my buddies as a child. I presume you meant being called the n-word by white people. I have never been called the N-word word, one on one, by a white person. It was always a group of white people, directed to me alone or myself or with one other person. Once I was walking with a high school girl friend in the wrong Brooklyn neighborhood and some kids (younger than us) called us that word while throwing rocks at us. I threw rocks back until it occured to me -- I would be in a world of trouble if the "po-po" or some adults caught me throwing rocks at their kids... Another situation I was jogging down a road in Raliegh, NC and a pickup truck, with a few white boys in it, drove my me and yelled me the N-word. While I was by myself I did not feel threated, it was obvious they were having a good time and just being stupid -- I did not think I was going to get lynched. In another instance, I was driving alone less than 1/2 a mile from the location above. I drove my car into a ditch. The car was resting on it's rear axle and my drive wheel was suspended in the air -- I stuck with no way to get out. It was pitch black. After about 10 minutes I could hear a car coming down the road. The were 4 white boys in a truck making a lot of noise. I throught about running -- then I said f-it I'm not going out like that. I decided to stay near the car and deal with the situation as best as I could. The boys promptly hooked my car up to their truck and pulled me out of the ditch. I was greatful and honestly a little ashamed. They refused the money I offered and left just as quickly as they came. From my perspective the n-word only has the meaning that we give to it. The most important thing is understanding the intentions of the people we deal with. A white person calling you "friend" can to cause you more damage than a Black buddy calling you ni--er. I'd be willing to bet the cops that shot that young Black man in Brooklyn never called him the N-word.

I actually live in the caribbean, the first and only time that I was called 'nigger' was by a fellow black classmate in highschool. I was 15 and just becoming aware of "evil yt". I don't remember my response but I do know that we both had detention after school. A decade and some years later. Gansta rap is where it's at and every young black male wants to BE a 'nigga' and live a 'thug life'. Stop the madness!!!! |

oh god, there where so many times... but i think it was in 1st grade and the teacher left the room and this little asshole grabbed the pointer and pointed at niger and said "you see that this is where your from, this is where all niggers come from" coincidently this was also the first of many suspensions to follow. *note the possibilty of being called a nigger in a 90% white school is very, very, very high* i do believe that when the "wiz" came out i also got in trouble for choking this girl for calling it the nigger of oz that same year. geez, not to mention anytime that i mised the bus and had to walk through the poor white area... hell if i didn't know any better the dogs where barking it out at me and the birds would be chirping it at me too. ...good lord, i better stop thinking about it , ya'll gonna get me fired up to slap a coworker just from the relapses. |

The blacker you are in phenotype, the bigger the "N", any which way you cut it? Perhaps so/maybe, given the prevailing attitudes of many whose Sub-Saharan black African admixture is minimal or miniscule at best. It's the context of use that really counts. Many times, blacks use the "N" word in jest and not out of hate, whereas whites use it out of ignorance and stupidity, given the word's incendiary history in the U.S. Chances are, "blacks" are more likely to be called a nigger by blacks than by any other recial group in the U.S. However, go to Greece, and they'll call you a nigger no matter what you look like. Ironically, many of those bastards wouldn't recognize the word even if you spray painted it all over them. These days, Indians from India are the most aggressive in refering to "blacks" as niggers. But that's ok - 'cause one day those flyin' carpets are going to run out of zip and fall back down to Earth and guess who'll be waitin' for them on the corner? The Rev. Al Sharpton and a couple thousand niggers from Harlem. All said. |

Chris -- Just think a little longer and harder. It'll come to you. Regardless of context, blacks refer to blacks as niggers (literally and perhaps even subconciously) more than any other group. "Check doze niggaz ouwt, will ya!" "Yeah, we know whut dem niggaz wuz doin'." "I seent dat nigga runnin' down da street." "Fuck dat nigga!" "I'll kick dat nigga's ass." "Sorry ass niggaz." "Nigga - Puhleeze!" "Nigga! What chu say?" "Who da fuck you callin' a nigga muthafucker?" "Dat nigga's crazy" "You know whut dem niggaz did?" "I caint bulleeve dem niggaz wood do sum shit like dat." "Caught dat nigga in my house." "Dat nigga wupped his ass." "I don't won't dem niggaz livin' wit me." "Dat nigga wuz smokin' some good shit." "Did you see dat nigga own TV?" "You know wut dat nigga told me?" And that's just the tip of the iceberg... |

You left out Redd Foxx, Nels. He was the first person to say "nigger" on television on Sanford and Son. In the episode, Fred G. Sanford was testifying in his own behalf. He argued that his case should be thrown out of court because the police officers only targeted Black folx. The line: "Look at all these niggers in here. Nuff niggers here to make a Tarzan movie." Redd Foxx, in real life, was an activist and very political. He and Malcolm X (Detroit Red) were running buddies back in the day. |

Nels: It won't come to me because if it was, as I suspect, a family member or friend it was said so much around me at the time I didn't pay it no mind. We say it a lot here in St. Louis, even now. I remember some friends coming home for a high school reunion a few years ago and they remarked about how they had said "nigger" more in a few days than in the years they had been away. |

I went to school in Canada, well Kindygarden through 7th grade. The school was 99% white, with me and my brothers being the "oddities." When kids would call me "the n word" in school it was more about something they heard from their parents more so than what they themselves truly meant. It was almost like saying "hey, that guy over there is wearing a yellow jacket." You know ... to them I was 'wearing a yellow jacket' ..It was always in a passive voice never angrily directly to my face ..like if I was walking by. In 7 or so years I was in that school I was called the n word about 10 to 15 times or so. I'd imagine the first time was being called it in a park at 10 years of age or so and me just looking back at the other kid like "....and?", in so much as one word (not knowing what it meant at the time) was meant to hurt me? ... what is interesting is there were different types of "racists." -The Seemingly Hardcore- Straight up Bullies who took all their intake from parents and would rehash it word for word whenever they met me and they actually wanted to fight me right there and then everytime! They never had any girlfriends, were loners, were "badass" or "alpha" males in their group of friends, if defeated in a one on one fight would get like 10 people the next day to do a 11 on 1 on you as you walked home from school. (luckily theses types all went to public school which was a few blocks away) - though, to 7th grade there was only one specific guy who did this. I pity any Black person who attended a pubic school with them cause they were a stubborn, ruthless type!! They did not give a f*ck! -Friends- They were my friends but whenever I pissed them off they would call me nigger, not to my face, but like, you know ... like we're playing a one on one game of basketball and I'm kicking ass, he'd look away and say "fucking nigger!" like he was calling me an "asshole but using nigger instead" - honestly these guys were my friends, but it was just a matter of fact thing for them...only two of my friends did this. I never thought anything of it. -Asshole Types- They said nigger just to say it to get a rise outta you. It was never out of anger... "I called you a nigger now what? Nigger, nigger, nigger"...they would walk up to you out of nowhere and be like "nigger" .. and just look at you for a few seconds, and say it over and over ... Like if I was playing a baseball game with my group of friends, another group of kids out of nowhere would call me over, like "hey come over here" .. "nigger" ... "well, I said nigger" ... "forget it, we're out" I was like "ooook", then return to my game. -The One Nighters- Kids who are cool and not "racist" but for some reason things start to go bad with them (upset with parents, bad grades, kids are picking on him/her) and they need a quick high or outlet for their frustration so they start to pick on minorities, especially on Blacks and start to say things like "atleast I'm not like those niggers" or go up to random minorities and say "I am WHITE, you are NOT..Look at my skin, I am WHITE!", "I have WHITE skin, look at it, look, I am better than you". And they would walk away all happy. But it only lasted a few weeks then they were back to their "I hate racists, stop picking on him just cause he has a different skin color, we're all the same" thing. It was fascinating! -Afraid/Compulsive/Iffy types- These kids are "afraid" to be around because they think you will "explode" and beat them up. Like "What if I say something wrong, will he hurt me?!!", "I don't want to say anything offensive or I will get in trouble!", "hi!, bye!, I gotta go!...shit was he offended?!" A different type takes the skin coloring literally. I accidently touched this one kid and he started going off "NO!! Now I will turn brown! Why did you touch me!?? DAMN IT!!.. My life is over!!... what am I going to tell my parents!!? They told me this would happen!!" and he walked away all disgruntled. The iffy type was a person who never had a Black friend before. So they're like "let's give this a chance" .. The moment ANYTHING goes wrong, they become "racist" and anti whatever the minority is. Like "well, I said to meet me at the park at 5:00pm, why weren't you there?" ..."I hate Black PEOPLE!" "Fuck you"!! and then they become a variation of the "one nighter" instead whenever this person feels shitty he is racist, and whenever he feels good he "loves Black people" To conclude, the white mentality at my 99% white school was that with Black people or anyone of noticeable African descent, it was either you are with us or against us, no in between. But to most other non-whites it was more you can be with us today but tomorrow fuck off..ok, wait, you're with us again..ok, now fuck off....and so on. However, there was this one Indian guy who was coldly rejected by all the white circles and was always looking from the outside in...he finally transferred! I wouldn't subject my kids to that ever. Not that it was racist, per se, but more so it was like everyone always wore a blue shirt, and everyday you were the guy with the yellow shirt being pointed out all the damn time. It was annoying, extremely disconcerting, and messed with my ability to do my school work well. |

One of the last memories of my dear departed mother, God Rest her soul, was of her getting ready for church one of the last times she would ever go and me teasing her about her thinking she was cute and her saying, "Listen here, nigger!" I tried without success to get her from calling her grandchildren that--she called them that from the time they could call. When they talk to me about it now they are puzzled about why she would do that. She came from a small town and never adjusted to big city negroes? She came from another time when it was more in use? She harbored the same self loathing character more prevalent in her generation? She was a nut? Probably a little of them all. |

At some point the conclusion has to be reached that whatever connotation the word "nigger" and its variations has among black folks, it is a label that is always offensive when white people use it, because it is a derogatory designation that is racist in origin. |

”CH - I promise you that neither one of my parents ever called me a nigger or any other derogatory thing and I turned out just fine.” Thank you. I have a likewise family experience. My mom, grandmother and auntie raised me. The word was not part of their vocabulary. The only people who called me the “N” word were whites and a few Puerto Ricans (if you can imagine that). When those whites called me the “N” word as a kid, they were very serious and the dripping venom from the corners of their mouths was a sure indicator they were calling me this out a deep rooted belief of racial superiority and hatred of black people. There was no mistaking this since the “N” word was often accompanied with advice and suggestions to "go back to Africa where I belong." ” I understand that's your mother, but calling your children a nigger - that's not love.” I agree. I don’t relate to the rationalization that being called the “N” word by other blacks or family members creates character and builds resilience against racism. I don’t buy that for one second. The pathetic double standard for the usage of the “N” word has always fallen short of the finish line of intelligence, logic, common sense and dignity. I’ve heard all the arguments and rationalizations for the use of the “N” word by blacks and every one possesses the same putrid stench as the ones non-blacks use for saying it. ” And it doesn't build strength and character.” Ya got that right! The weak and tired justification for using it by blacks reflects a deep rooted self hatred that is coupled with misguided self righteous delusions of victimization and entitlement. NO ONE HAS A RIGHT TO USE THE WORD UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES…..PERIOD!

Mzuri: You are weak as water. I have been called nigger so many times I don't even think about it- You talk about me--what are you going to do if someone calls you a nigger? Are you going to kill them? Are you going to sue them? You aren't going to do anything about it at all is what but wail on this site. I just said "Nigger" one hundred times. What are you going to do? You aren't going to do anything. I am in favor of the Lenny Bruce method--say it until it loses its power. Like all treatments it will involve pain-- But you are so weak you can't stand it. How did our forbears, who stood up under so much, turn out such weaklings? Or is it because you are internet black folks. I have noticed that people on the Internet are very weak. |

”Ntfs: Let me tell you a little story. Black man has a confrontation with a white man. White man calls him a nigger. Brother beats the white man up. "You still a nigger," the white man says. Brother beats………………." Brother gives up.” Chris, I have no idea what you were attempting to prove but let me take a guess. For the record, I was in a situation like that when I was a kid. A white kid who lived around the block from me, always (which he got from his father –who called me “niggers” also) always call me a “nigger”. Every time he did that, he got an ass kicking. Well, one day he said and I jumped on him. He starting crying and I let him go. As Soon as he got a few yards way, he did it again. I chased him down and began beating him again. This time, he starting screaming for me to stop. I let him go again. He was sobbing and heaving as he was walking away. When he got to the end of the block, he stopped crying, turned around and hollered, “Go to hell, ya black nigger!!!” You know what my response was but he had too much of a lead and hauled ass down the block to his house and got away….that time. So yes, you can’t beat the “N” word out of people. I know this. But you don’t have to use nor tolerate people calling you the “N” word. I’m not suggesting violence as an answer to name calling because violence usually leads to more violence. But my disgust stems from the mindless regurgitation of the “N” word by black people towards other black people, whether in private or in a mixed public environment. NO OTHER RACE OR ETHNICITY OPENLY AND COLLECTIVELY USES HISTORICALLY DEGRADING RACIST LANGUAGE TOWARDS ONE ANOTHER EXCEPT BLACK PEOPLE –NONE!!!! I’ve heard all the embarrassing excuses and pale justifications for the extemporaneous and cavalier use of this dehumanizing word. Not one of them is even remotely acceptable –NOT ONE! As I said before, it appears as if I am the only one who has consistently displayed the resolve of “self righteous indignation” at the usage of this racist epithet by blacks towards other blacks (or anyone else for that matter). You and many of the readers of this board see nothing wrong with black people calling other black people “niggers” (or any of the sickening stupid variations of the word). Perhaps you enjoy and relish the idea of blacks calling other blacks “niggers” and will stridently defend the disgusting indefensible double standard that accompanies it’s usage. Maybe you feel it’s refreshing, cathartic, exciting, fun and a good thing to call other blacks “niggers”. I don’t know. But I do know that you and I (and the all registered members of the We Like The “N” Word Fan Club) will irreconcilably disagree about this word. But we can be civil about this and agree to disagree and move on. You enjoy the word and it’s an embedded role in your vocabulary. Fine. You are legally free to do so. Do what you do. As for me, personally I will continue to refrain from using (privately or publicly) a tortured racist word that was created to reduce my race to a sub-human status. There ya have it. Enjoy……..
