Angelou book attacked in Wisconsin FOND DU LAC, Wis., Nov. 24 (UPI) -- Some parents want Wisconsin's Fond du Lac High School to remove Maya Angelou's "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," from an advanced English reading curriculum. A nine-member committee met to recommend either keeping or getting rid of the book, but has not announced a decision yet, the Fond du Lac (Wis.) Reporter said. School principal Mary Fran Merwin said she would not release the names of the two parents and a student who requested that the book be pulled from the sophomore advanced English reading curriculum. The request came even though the complaining student was permitted to substitute another book, the newspaper said. About 80 people attended the meeting. About 45 people spoke against the book, while teachers defended it. Angelou's autobiographical work includes accounts of her rape and subsequent unwanted pregnancy. "I felt as a teacher of the book that the students were mature enough to handle the concepts of the book and look beyond the images portrayed to a deeper meaning and the effects of what Angelou went through," teacher Joe Pentek said. At the end of the meeting, the book remained as part of the curriculum. |
