well unfortunatly the vote to ban affirmative action in michigan has passed. i figured that it would. i have to give university of michigan props for trying to keep it alive. that 7% of black students was just too much for white michiganders too bear. guess it will be just like the universities in california and will boast that whalloping less than 3% black students on campuses. yay! equality has finnaly arrived. simon says take 5 steps backwards. |

I agree. Ward Connerly and his white conservative friends are very happy tonight! You can look for more states to head in the same direction. However, it will not affect the outstanding black athletes for the Wolverines and Michigan State. Too much money is being generated by the presence of these black ball players for the schools to loose. But I'm sure they'll find a way around it. But as you said, much props to Michigan University. They really tried to encourage and support diversity on their campus and law school. Expect more of this very soon. The angry white people of Michigan are sending a determined message to liberals and black folks: Don’t even think for one second you’re going to get any thing free. No more free passes for you people!

when i saw this blak dude on this commercial telling people to vote yes on proposal 2 (to ban affirmative action) all that i couls see in him was the same sell-out son of bitches who pointed out where other africans where to put on a slave ships. to be honest with you, i knew that the proposal would pass. they did everything in their power to really make it seem like blacks and other minorities where all "c" average students and getting in while all the white "a" students weren't able to get into schools. they made it seem like minorities who recieved government jobs where just some bumbs who didn't deserve them. they did an excellent job of making it seem like affirmative action isn't necessary anymore, people like clarence thomas who wouldn't be where he is without AA, have the nerves to say that it needs to be banned definitly gave white america (mainly republicans) even more ammunition. oh well, to all the black people who didn't vote on it they have nothing to complain about i guess. i think that this will now sweep the entire country ... and it will take about 3-5 years to show the ill effects for minorities. this will also show the ill effects for white america to when race relations become severed, the only difference now and the 60's will be more rodney king aftermaths. anyone with common sense would see that things aren't equal and if they needed proof then all they had to do was watch the hurricane katrina coverage. |

This is about one thing and one thing ONLY: Standardize Exam scores. So now. What do Black foks do? Complain about the unfairness and bias of standardized exams? Or do we concentrate on scoring higher on the exams? |

That is very disappointing. So if they banned affirmative action, that means they'll uphold and obey discrimination laws...........right? (not) |

Chris: "Every place blacks can they should make sure white folks don't get jack and they get it all--" You mean like rooster spots in the NBA, NFL and MLB? Of, dayam, I forgot. The combined ownership of those leagues are +99% White. Well...there's always Hip-Hop (maybe). |

Btw: Has anyone ever asked Ward Connerly what has he done to help improve elementary and secondary education for Blacks and minorities so that, perhaps, the disparities of standardize exam scores would lessen? |

Well, the West Indians and people with African surnames will have to find another way to capitalize off of affirmative action. All the others who were fomerly eligible will just have to swell the ranks of the historically-black colleges. BTW, The University of Illinois is crying for black students to seek admission to their school, but they're not having much luck. Academically, it's too hard and doesn't have a reputation as a party school - it's been said. |

only 37% of blacks voted, the other 63% will be the ones crying later ... there was absolutely no excuse for them not to vote, this was very important. ABM i don't know what their gonna' do about standardized test, it would be nice if all children had the same equal education from kindergarten to the 12th grade, but thats not the case. everyone knows who has the short end of the stick, so how can you win a race when soeone else is getting a better start and your being pulled back before the race even begins. i hope this is a wake-up call for young black americans because if there still sleeping they are now fucked. this ban now ends minority businesses chances to get fair govt bids (it now goes back to the underhanded hook ups that whites where doing in the 60,70,80's and through out their entire exsistance. minority chances to go to the more esteemed colleges. and that takes care of the jobs that people really want, because no one is going to hire someone from a juco before they higher someone from a major university (in most cases). oh, well i guess i may as well shut the fudge up and have a coke and a smile. because the damage is done. |

This Affirmative Action ban in MI will now serve as a precedent to ban it in other states. Many felt/feel that Affirmative Action gave Blacks an unfair and undeserved advantage, but it actually helped to close the gap between the dominant majority and subordinate minority. Plus, it's documented that White women were in fact the greatest benefactors of Affirmative Action; student loans, small business loans, home and auto loans - remember, being a female of any background in this country automatically makes you a minority. So this move will not only hurt Blacks (and other people of color) but it will hurt those who benefitted most from Affirmative Action even more, which would be White women. I wonder if Connerly, as well as those who voted for the ban, took that into consideration. |

"Btw: Has anyone ever asked Ward Connerly what has he done to help improve elementary and secondary education for Blacks and minorities so that, perhaps, the disparities of standardize exam scores would lessen?" Are you kiddin’?? This man is the ultimate Negrophobe. The last place you will see him is surrounded by black people or venturing into black communities, dedicating the same level of effort and passion to dismantle affirmative action, attempting to find possible alternatives or solutions to poor black academic performance. Not going to happen! Instead, he is basking in the spot light of accolades and a standing ovation by white conservatives because of the Michigan success. He is quite happy with the attention and praise they are heaping on him. Sadly enough, the man is from California! He tried that here! He was on the California Board of Regents where he launched his campaign against affirmative action in the UC system. So now he is going from state to state on a crusade to eliminate affirmative action. As I said, you are not going to see this man addressing a black crowd, symposium or public arena with suggestions or encouragement for improved black educational standards and performance. THERE IS NOTHING IN WARD CONNERLYS PERSONAL HISTORY THAT SUGGESTS HE HAS ANY AFFINTIY NOR ASSOCIATION WITH BLACK PEOPLE. And why would he? It would only offend his white conservative supporters.

Dobes, I hear you. But where it gets tricky for me is when you have Black kids from educated and affluent families score BELOW those of poorer White and Asian kids. THAT'S the kinda stuff that don't make no gotdayam sense. No doubt, there are MYRIAD inequities that manifest in Black foks getting shortshrifted. But when you HAVE the resources and opportunities yet you STILL lag behind others, well then, there just ain't no dayam excuse for THAT. Urban_scribe, Many of those who hate Blacks would like to put White chicks back into their place too. Ntfs, Of course, you're right. Still. It would be interesting to see him publicly challenged to help improve some inner city school. Because THAT might help change the trajectory and emphasis of what he's pulling. |

"....only 37% of blacks voted, the other 63% will be the ones crying later ... there was absolutely no excuse for them not to vote,..." What????????????? Are you sure? Can you prove that? Do you have a link to support that?? I’m not suggesting you are lying because I can't prove such. But if you are correct, that is fuckin' disgusting!!! OMG!!!! You have no idea how passionate I am about black political apathy and refusal to get involved in the political process. The least you can do is VOTE!! Grass root mobilizing, blogging, informing your elected officials of your support or disgust and voting does have an impact! DO NOT LET ANYONE TELL YOU OTHER WISE! Black people in Michigan have gotten exactly what they deserve. It's the same mantra I bleat about the American public -THEY DESERVE THE POLITICIANS THEY VOTE OR DO NOT VOTE FOR! Do your research and examine the state and local initiatives and scrutinize the history of the politicians you vote for. Yesterday I called my mom back in Ohio and she asked me had I voted yet. I said no. But before I could explain why (I had two errands to run and the voting station is two walking blocks from where I live) she cursed me out and threaten to whip my ass!! After I explained I was going to but had not yet, well, she calmed down. Ha! Ha! Ha! I came from a family that is very passionate about being active in the political process. Unfortunately, it appears the same mindset is somewhat absent in the black folks of Michigan. I do however feel sorry for the minority students who live out of state. and had eyes on Michigan University. It's a fine school. And if you could post some info or link about the outrageous failure of black voters Doberman, I would really appreciate it.

Dobey - Is that 37% of the Blacks or 37% of the Black registered voters? There's a major difference. NTFS - I would recommend that in the future you vote early. Oftentimes if you wait until election day, you have long lines to contend with, other things come up and before you know it you missed your chance to cast your ballot |

I feel ya Doberman. When Connerly pulled that stunt in California they nicknamed the anti affirmative action proposition the “civil rights initiative” and a lot of black folks got confused and voted FOR the damn thing. Crafty bastards! Plus the voter turnout was very low so we didn’t stand a chance. As a Black Californian and a graduate of the University of California I take full responsibility for not finding Ward Connerly and kicking his unnatural azz. Sorry y’all.

Fortunately it doesn't apply. I can walk to the voting center which is around the block. I have never encountered a line. The most number of people who have been in front of me has been three people. I guess I'm lucky to live in the community I do. I can imagine what it is like in other communities, especailly large urban areas. But thanks for the tip. |

Only about 14% of Michigan's population is African American. So even if every +18 years old Black person voted to retain Affirmative Action, even if only 1/3 of non-Black Michigan voters voted to end Affirmative Action, DOWN goes Affirmative Action. |

i heard it on a detroit radio station and also saw the turnout information on the local news channel, but i would tell you to check out detroitnews.com and see what they post about it. at any rate, i feel that since they want to ban affirmative action because they feel that it is unfair. then i think it's time to start making churches pay the same taxes as everyone else, it's only fair. why should they be considered tax exempt and recieve state funding and other tax breaks, equality is equality after all ... and the most successful churches aren't anything but businesses anyways. but i digress i will find those stats your looking for pertaining to the black turn-out. |
