there is a film called "city of god". this film takes place in a "favela" (slum) of brazil.

there is also a program called "city of men", that also takes place in a "favela" (slum0 of brazil.

"city of men" just came out on dvd. "city of god" has been out for a few years.

ALL black americans should make an effort to see these productions.

why?

because these shows (and film) show without a doubt, that the "black people" in brazil, are identical to the "black people" in america.

we are ONE people (nation). if we live in brazil, america, columbia, the dominican republic, panama, bolivia (yes, there are "black" people in bolivia), equador, honduras, peru (yes, there are "black" people in peru), the west indian islands, etc.

when our nation was enslaved, we were brought to different parts of the "new world", and taught different langueges. this is why our nation is divided.
we are ONE people.

if you watch these programs or films ("city of men" or "city of god"), you can clearly see that the "black" people of brazil, are identical to the "black" people of america. the ONLY difference is the tounges we speak.

the movie "city of god", is a GREAT film. but it also shows that theb "black people" of brazil are the same as the "black americans".

the "black people" in brazil look NO different than the black people in america.

the program "city of men" (about two youths growing up in a favela (slum) of brazil) is good also.'

the "black" people of america, and the "black" people of brazil, are the same. we just speak different languages.

divide and conquer is a old tool to control our people.

the black brazilians and the black americans are the SAME people.

anyone who is interested, shopuld try to see "city of god (the movie)" or "city of men (that just came out on dvd)".

i speak spanish, but brazilian portugues (i think i spelled it wrong) is a VERY hard language to pick up.

but the movie (city of god) and program(city of men) are GREAT!!!!!!!!!!

everyone should see them!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, alot of them do look different than Black Americans. And most Black Brazilians like Black Americans make a conscience effort not to identify with Blacks or Africa.

Brazil is actually a land populated by Mullattos. And the mullattos are extremely racist, and elitist.

But if you say we should see the movie than I guess we should.

Also, I have seen that movie. I think it is about the Brazilian drug gangs in the 70's. If I am not mistaken.

You mean the same American blacks that refer to themselves as AFRICAN AMERICANS?

Yes, I heard that in Brazil if you have some European physical trait like light skin, long, hair or light eyes you can legally change your race from Black to White.

Also, Lil_ze I don't understand you. You want Black Americans and Afro-Hispanics to come together but you want nothing to do with Africans. You don't seem to understand that if we don't identify with out root then there will never be any real collaboration with anybody.

well when i was ACTUALLY THERE, i did not observe such a thing. that movie was based from a photographer's life when he was a kid, who is 40 something years old now. serenasailor your always talking about stuff you have no experience with or have no proof of.

not to try to say that black americans and black brazilians shouldnt unify, but serena is right when he says the black brazilians look different from black americans.

they just have a different look and its hard to explain it but they do. their skin is a different texture and thier noses and eyes seem to be shaped different for the most part and they tend to have oilier skin on average ...this is not to say we shouldnt unify though.

also for some reason mixed race brazilians hair is a different texture from mixed race black americans hair. even most of the dark ones have straight to wavy textured hair that tends to be jet black.

anyway, the differences are jsut interesting to observe.

misty i lived in cuba for 9 months, the sun combined with the water gives your skin a different kind of glow. since i'm a tad on the light skindedededed side it made me have an orangeish hue (hince the reason my punk ass army buddies called me ernie). The people of cuba and the people of brazil are mixed bunch of people some look 100% white and some look 100% black. maybe they didn't say anything to me because they both thought i was one of them when i was in both cuba and brasil.

these other black or afrocentric based people from other country need to assimilate with black americans when they get here as opposed to worrying so much about not being considered black, that includes africans. once that happens then i believe a better understanding between all black could take a step forward.

sure SOME "black" people from brazil have a differnent "look" than some black americans.
you can find black americans with the same "different look" that many of the people of brazil have.
but ive been to brazil 3 times, and i can say that the black people in brazil are almost identical looking to black americans.

i understand that there has been a great deal of "mixing" in brazil. so many people from brazil who have dark skin do have a unique look about them.
but you can also find these things amongst black americans.

you can look at "snoop dog" and see that he has a different look than michael jordan.

black americans (who have brown skin) have various "looks" about them.

the "black people" in brazil have the same various looks.

i will say that i have seen some very interesting looking "black" people in brazil.

but for the most part, the "black people" in brazil, look identical to black americans.

if you see "city of god" or "city of men", there is NO way you could say that the black people in brazil DON'T look like black americans. they do.

sure there are some black brazilians who have "interesting looks" about them. but there are black americans who have "different textured hair", rare (brown) skin tones, etc.

is there anyone on this forum that does not know a "black american" (who is brown skin), that has a "different look" than most black americans? we all do. some of us (myself included, im brown), may have this look ourselves.

it is true there has been more mixing in brazil, but the "black people" of brazil look just like west indian blacks, black americans, etc.

as far as me wanting to unite with "black hispanics" etc, that would be a good thing.

but i don't believe that the people in the land of "africa" are our "root".

if you feel the people in africa are your root, thats your right. but i know better.

Speaking as someone of latin descent the blacks in the latin world do not really look like african-americans to me. African-americans have a look that mirrors west africans (and often south africans for some reason) a lot more than afro-latins. To find a Brasillian who looks 'quite' west african is a rare thing whereas it is not so in america.

I think the differences are a great thing and prove the diversity of black people.

As for Lil_Ze; if you ever want blacks to unite, even just a little bit, you are going to have to acknowledge africa. Brasil holds a big acknowledgement for the continent. In many parts of Brasil they still hold dear many strains of some african religions and customs. Brasillians look to africa rather fondly.
