Snipes avoids jail time with IRS settlement WASHINGTON, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Hollywood actor Wesley Snipes will avoid any time in jail on tax fraud charges as part of a recent settlement with the Internal Revenue Service. The 44-year-old star of the "Blade" film trilogy had been wanted in connection with his attempt to claim $12 million in tax refunds in 1996 and 1997, but worked out a deal that helped him avoid jail while setting up a payment plan, Daily Variety said. Snipes had reportedly had his taxes for those years prepared by accountants with a noted history profiting from filing false returns. He had apparently used such tax packages to make the fraudulent claims. The two men whose tax packages Snipes used in the incident have since been apprehended and indicted on similar charges. The paper said Snipes' deal with the IRS will not only allow the actor to avoid jail time, but also will not interrupt his film work. He is currently shooting the horror film "Gallowwalker" in Africa. |

'Blade' star Wesley Snipes to avoid jail over tax charges: report Thu Nov 2, 2:23 PM ET Hollywood action hero Wesley Snipes has struck a deal with US authorities that will see him avoid a jail term for allegedly dodging millions of dollars in taxes, it was reported. The star of the 'Blade' vampire movies has reached an agreement with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) whereby he will adhere to a payment plan in exchange for not serving a prison sentence, entertainment daily Variety reported. The deal will also enable Snipes, who is currently in Namibia shooting a horror movie, to continue working and travelling abroad. Snipes's managers, The Schiff Company, would not immediately confirm the report but said they expected to make a statement shortly. "We hope to announce something soon. We will need to clear it with the lawyers first," a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles-based management firm said. Earlier this month, federal prosecutors in Tampa, Florida, issued an eight-count indictment accusing Snipes and two Florida men, Eddie Kahn and Douglas Rosile, of conspiracy to defraud the IRS and submitting fake claims. Snipes, 44, who is best known for the "Blade" trilogy of vampire movies and films such as "Jungle Fever" and "White Men Can't Jump", was also accused of six separate counts of failing to file income tax returns. The indictment alleges Snipes owed around 12 million dollars in unpaid taxes. The conspiracy and false claim charges carry a maximum sentence of five years imprisonment each. Backers of the movie Snipes is shooting in Namibia, "Gallowwalker", said they were unfazed by the controversy surrounding the actor. "We are happy that he continues to turn up on set each day. If his indictment creates this amount of press it shows he's a star," financier Gary Smith told Variety. The deal paves the way for Snipes to appear in a new movie set in Asia next year. The movie, "Dragon", sees Snipes playing an FBI agent on the trail of a druglord. Filming starts in Thailand in January, Variety reported. The action hero first rose to fame in the 1980s when he was cast in the video for Michael Jackson's single "Bad". That proved to be the springboard for a successful acting career characterised by his portrayal of tough-guy characters in movies such as "Demolition Man" and "New Jack City". A martial arts fanatic, Snipes is famous for inserting quotations from Sun Tzu's "The Art of War" into his characters' roles. |

Well, if it's true, looks like he had good lawyers. He is very lucky because they will make room for him in jail if he doesn’t give them some money. But like any government or business entity, if you promise to give them money, they will listen and negotiate. So I'm not surprised at this. But he was still stupid to get involved with this tax evasion nonsense to begin with. I have no idea what these high profile people are thinking. THE IRS IS RUTHLESS AND UNFORGIVING ABOUT MONEY, JUST LIKE THE OLD MAFIA USED TO BE. WHEN YA MESS WITH THE MONEY -YOU'RE GOING TO PAY!!

Didn't Dubya promise to do something about the IRS? Wasn't that one of his campaign promises? |

Wes betta thank his lucky stars and never try some ish like this again. If you only learn one thing as an American it should be "Do NOT eff with the IRS." P.S. The morning DJ at one of the stations here said this morning that he could stay in Namibia and try to get Angelina Jolie or Madonna to adopt him. I couldn't help myself: I almost crashed from laughing so hard! |

Brad, Angelina and Wesley. Wow. I'd make a contribution to my favorite charity to see that. And, yeah, NTFS, the IRS is the only agency or organization that can attach a retiree's pension, which is why I always keep my taxes up to date. |

LOL @ Cynique! When I read that I thought of the promo for the recent movie with the Wayans ("Little Man"?) I had this thought about Angelina saying to "baby" Wes in the tub "You want some company?" and then Brad doffing his towel and climbing in... Rub-a-dub-dub!

Mzuri: They are only responding to your barely disquised auto eroticism. Dubya DID do something about the IRS. He called them off his rich friends and sicced them on everybody else. |

Thank you for your indulgent words, Mzuri! The world is my platinum oyster, and if I turned into a pearl, it's because the thought of doing hard work irritated the grain of sand I used to be. Huh? And I might add that you are a piece of work, yourself, girlfriend! |
