Well, here we go again. A black female friend of mine sent these pics that were in an e-mail which was sent to her. She said a black male friend of hers sent the pics and steadfastly maintains the black women in the pictures are of almost average physical proportion and size (and appearance!) for most American black women, particularly those in the South. She told me at first she thought he was joking. He said he was not. She shared the pics with a fellow black male co-worker who agreed with the brother who sent them. Needless to say, my female friend did not agree. No surprise there. But the brother men argued that these women are the ones who represent no less than 50% of all black American women. Very hard core. If any of this is even remotely true....well....it don't look good for the sister girls! You decide....

CHILDHOOD OBESITY (U.S.)
- Among female youth, the highest overweight and obesity prevalence is found in black (non-Hispanic) girls (ages 6 to 11), 37.6 percent and 22.2 percent respectively, and black (non-Hispanic) adolescent females (ages 12 to 19), 45.5 percent and 26.6 percent respectively.
- Among male youth, the highest overweight and obesity prevalence is found in Mexican American boys (ages 6 to 11), 43 percent and 27.3 percent respectively, and Mexican American adolescent males (ages 12 to 19), 44.2 percent and 27.5 percent respectively.
- Overweight prevalence for Native American children and adolescents (ages 5 to 17) was reported in a 1999 study as 39 percent for males and 38 percent for females in the Aberdeen area Indian Health Service.
- Asian American adolescents (ages 13 to 18) were reported to have an overweight prevalence of 20.6 percent in the 1996 National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health.
- Asian-American and Hispanic-American adolescents born in the U.S. to immigrant parents are more than twice as likely to be overweight as foreign born adolescents who move to the U.S.
ADULT OBESITY (U.S.)
- In the US, over 65% of all adults are obese or overweight.
- The prevalence of overweight (Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25 or more) and obesity (BMI of 30 or more) increased over the last decade across racial / ethnic groups, as shown in Table 1.
- Mexican American and black (non-Hispanic) adults in the U.S. are considerably more overweight and obese than white (non-Hispanic) adults.

- The American Indian population also has high prevalence rates of overweight. Among the highest rates reported (overweight defined as BMI of > 27.8 for men and > 27.3 for women) are for American Indians in Arizona at 80 percent for women and 67 percent for men, according to researchers of the Strong Heart Study in 1995.
Gender
- For women, the black (non-Hispanic) population has the highest prevalence of overweight (78 percent) and obesity (50.8 percent).
- For men, the Mexican American population has the highest prevalence of overweight (74.4 percent) and obesity (29.4 percent).
- Overweight, obesity and severe obesity (BMI of 40 or more) prevalence increased for men and women in various racial / ethnic groups in the U.S. over the last decade, as shown in Tables 2, 3 and 4.

Maybe the reason black women tend to be overweight is because they turn to food for comfort, - and Lord knows, they need comforting. Their status in society is enough to make them ill at ease. Of course, it should also be noted that the average American woman now wears a size 12. |

I'm a size 8 (5'4", approx 130 lbs - by approx I mean it's somewhere between 125 and 130) and most of the Black women I know around here do NOT look like the women depicted above. |

Of course there's some fat Black women around here, but they don't dominate the population, unless they're all sitting at home not making public appearances and nobody's seeing them. Most of the women in my town keep themselves together nicely and I'm sure that's the way it is everywhere else. When I travel to ATL, LA and elsewhere - most Black women I encounter got it goin on! This myth about us being big fat sloppy slobs is bullshit. |

Cynique - I knew you and I were twins. Girlfriend, Wal-Mart/Sam's and Family Dollar are two of my favorite spots. Besides Pier One, Hobby Lobby, Michael's and all the places that I shop for interior decor stuff. 
I'm not arguing the point that we don't have fat chicks, I'm just saying that the majority of Black women aren't walking around here unkempt and looking like big fat hoochie mammas. |

Well, I wouldn’t take it personal because I know I’m not fat and sloppy. You aren’t either. You stated your physical stats. I believe you. But if you did, I would probably disagree (suggesting obese men were average for black males) and I would want more exact details of the particular age group you are referencing. Older men, like women, face the dreaded metabolism decline and tend gain weight with age. Men generally collect fat in the waist and stomach. I see guys with pot bellies every day. Young and old. But if you measure the waists of the average 25 year old male and compare it to the average 45 year old male, well, you know there is going to be a statistical discrepancy between the age groups. That would be expected. That’s just the way it is. But no, I wouldn’t’ take it personally. In fact, as soon as I finish writing this post, it’s off to the gym. It’s a legs and abs day for me.

True. But when she sent the e-mail with the pics, I had to post it. You and I both know the average black woman does not look like these women. I never stated these women were average –they did! Granted, there is a large number that do –I see them all the time. But I wouldn’t go as far as the brothers she told me about who believe these women are the statistical phenotype average for black women. I don’t know if they were pulling her leg or not. She said they weren’t. But hard to say, I did not personally interact with the brothers and discuss it. I don’t know.

Of course! In fact, I saw two sister girls this week who I personally walked up to and complimented them for their beautiful hair. Both had down the back dreads and they looked exquisite. Neither of them were no where physically close to the out of shape-flabby obese women in the posted pics. Both women were very much in proportion. One had a very nice Navy blue business lady (that may sound silly but I don’t know how else to describe her outfit) out fit on. She looked great.
And to up that ante, when I was at the gym Wednesday, as I was coming in, a young black woman was walking out who had an awesome body! I was surprised at the skimpy outfit she had on. She had a sports bra type top and short-shorts on. But the sister had super legs and calves! Very curvy and thick. She had thick shoulders with very developed shapely arms and great body symmetry. It was very obvious she was a body builder type with such a superior physique. But she was black and she looked damn good!!
So, once again, as you and I and the rest of the fair minded folks on this board realize, you can’t take any of these posts personally! I never do. And to be honest, not to be disrespectful or inflammatory, I’m somewhat surprised at your response. You’re normally pretty cool and good natured about the outrageous pics that often dominate this board. Dang! Have I gotten myself into trouble because of this…?????

those photos of the female in the first post are totally disgusting.
if these females look like that (fat) in there 20's and 30's, imagine how they will look in their late 30's or 40's?
i have never understood the whole finding "thick" females attractive.
these "thick" females are just unhealthy and sloppy looking.
joy bryant is the ideal body form. she is slim, attractive, and as she gets older, she won't have loads of stored fat in her body thst will just sit there and grow, like these "thick" females have.
females like "buffy the body" are really quite revolting to look at (although im not saying i would not do her). females like "buffy the body" are not "thick", they are just unhealthy and sloppy. id like to see buffy the body in ten years.
she is going to be SO fat and sloppy, from all of those years of stored fat in her body.
joy bryant, on the other hand, will still be slim, healthy, and beautiful.
all females should aspire to look like joy bryant (body wise).
not some fat, sloppy, revolting pig, like "buffy the body.

Wrong! They are two different things and I’m surprised you cannot see the difference between the two. However, you do make a very good point when pointing out the predictable consequences of thick women. The average shapely thick woman is generally under 35 years of age. When women are young, often they can maintain being thick with very curvaceous bodies minus hanging stomachs, rolls of fat on the sides and faces that are liken to bowling bowls with more chins than a Chinese phone book. The problem is when they become 40 and over, it’s a fast ride down hill because of the reversal of their natural metabolic rate. That is when thick turns to fat and all the swelling and protruding becomes very dominant. I use the age 40 because that is the standard bench mark when society punches your ticket and forces you on the over the hill bus with the neon blinking old announcement advertisement on both sides. I personally don’t agree with that but that is the way our culture is.
Female body builders are very thick during the off competition season. They are thick but very curvy, solid, balanced, symmetrical and there are no protruding stomachs or rolls of fat on their bodies. The problem, as you have sited, usually occurs when so called thick women become older. That is when they loose their symmetry and the rolls, stomachs, double chins and mega butts become dominant. And all of this is due to the natural transformation the human body goes through as one ages.
Unless the average young woman who is thick, commits herself to very consistent rigorous working out and training with a strict eating life style (not diet!), she can expect to explode as she ages. But you can still be thick and over 40. In fact, there was a black amateur female body builder who was thick when she won the Niagara Falls body building contest at the age of 52!!! This is a true story. She had enough symmetry, muscle mass and shape to defeat women half her age. Her name is Linda Wood-Hoyte. She is thick, shapely and she just turned 63!!! The woman looks great! So there is a difference between being thick and fat!

Come on now, NTFS, this is not your father's runway. According to the mavens who arbitrate such things, nowadays, 40 is the new 30! And don't discount women who've been "thin" all their lives and then get "thick" when they get older;like me. Up until the time I retired at 62 I was a size 8. Now I'm a size 12! You tread a slippery slope when making generalizations about women based on their chronological age. And, finally, telling a 40-year-old man that he is "over the hill", would elicit howls of protest! Who said male chauvinism isn't alive and well. LOL. |

I agree. With all the advancements in cosmetic facial surgeries, breast implants, advanced nutrition and supplements, emphasis on physical fitness and being in shape, the over all physical appearance of women today is somewhat different than it was in 1960. Women over 40 can look very fit and much more youthful today than women of the past. They have options their mothers and grandmothers did not have.

Absolutely. I agree. But generally, most women over 40 cannot wear the clothes they wore when they were 25. The bodies have changed. Same goes for men. The average man over 40 could not fit into his military uniform that he wore when he was 20. Why?

I know, I know…..but what I said was true. Women (over 40) generally do not maintain the same physical proportions they did when they were young. In fact, every single female I know (over 40) has shown me pictures of themselves when they were in their 20’s. NOT ONE IS EVEN CLOSE IN SIZE TO THOSE PICTURES TODAY –NOT ONE! And when I say this, I don’t say it to be disrespectful or sexist. In fact, I found a picture of myself recently when I was 22 years old. I was around 166 pounds in that picture. Well, needless to say, I don’t weight 166 pounds today. Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Whooooaaaaa!!!! Hold on a second. I don’t feel that way. That is not my personal thinking. But it is the thinking of our youth crazed society at large. Case in point, I recall when I was in the Navy, I was stationed at a weapon system training site. The senior staff NCO for the system I was in, turned 43. When the younger guys found out about his 43rd birthday, this guy took the beating of his life! All day long they were ragging on him, laughing at him, calling him old goat, old fuck, saying his first ship was Noah’s Ark. Now personally, I have never indulged in berating anyone because of their age. As I said, I have no use for such nonsense. At the time, I was in my 20’s. And I remember he walked over to my desk (I was the only one in the office that was not partaking in this orgy of age bashing), leaned over and said, “Ya know something, you may experience a certain type of prejudice because you are black. But there is another prejudice you will experience one day. And that’s the prejudice because of your age.” He then turned around and walked out the office. I’ll never forget that. But no, I don’t consider anyone over the hill because they are over 40. As I said, age bashing is not my thing. I never do it! But plenty of people in our society do.
One more thing, as you have personally experienced, a number of times, a few younger posters who happened to be in a dispute with you, made very derogatory references about your age. Each time I read those posts, I had to refrain from viciously attacking them for doing so. Although I did not have a dog in the fight, I found those childish juvenile snide remarks about your age to be extremely offensive. If they disagreed with your position or commentary, fine. I have no problems with that. You are more than capable of defending yourself. But I find such derogatory remarks about your age to be highly unwarranted, unnecessary and disrespectful. I know it is a generational gap that is rearing its ugly head. I was raised to respect my seniors even though I did not like them personally. I’m sure you were raised the same way. Unfortunately, such values do not exist today.

Oh gosh, menopause, the Big M. I remember when my mom went through her "personal summers." She'd have the a/c on full-blast in freezing weather. She'd munch on crushed ice straight from her fridge's icemaker; and she gained 10 pounds right smack in her hips. I once asked her which was worse: pregnancy or menopause? She said, "I'd rather be 60 than pregnant ANY day."

Urban Scribe......that was an interesting thing for her to say. I quite LOVED being pregnant! I've even considered being a surrogate mother. And then I remember the RECOVERY from the birth.
The birth wasn't bad for me (blood sugar and blood pressure too low so I had a c-section that I completely slept through).....but try six weeks of feeling like your stomach is going to fall out....that's the hard part.
OR having incision pain so bad that the doctor let's you control your own morphine drip. LOL

Well, Tonya, from what I can detect about your circumstances, I know women in their 40s who have it more together than you. And to really pour salt on your wounds, Halle Berry is already, or about to turn 40. Same for Janet Jackson. Angela Bassett is also in her 40s as is Vanessa Williams and quite a few other mellowed-out prominent black women. Fine wine gets better with age, girlfriend. Yup, they do look young. Teenagers, perhaps. But unless you know them you cannot say for sure. And being "mistaken" for grown women is likely exactly the reaction they were aiming for.
I have already given my opinion of Ntfs's posting of this pic: he meant to provoke. I try to stay away from entertaining folks on this board who wish to make fun of everyday (as opposed to celebrity) Black women (and girls) in order to provoke responses.
I hope, Tonya, that young women like you are trying to help young women like in this photo know that there are alternative ways of being proud, fabulous Black women than what they are putting out there. They would likely be more likely to listen to someone closer to their own age than they are to me--though that does not stop me from talking to and attempting to mentor young Black women as well.
As for my own young girls, you can rest assured they will never appear clothed and otherwise outfitted as these young women in the photo are. But if by chance they do, I will still rest assured that I have done everything in my power, in partnership with their father, to have raised them differently. What others think of my efforts and intentions--including (and especially)--people who do not know me personally plays little in my thoughts.

This comment is so asinine it's hard to believe anyone could be so stunningly stupid. But obviously it's true. Many women and men who are forty are looking great and at the height of their careers. Anything said to the contrary has taken ignorance to an unprecedented level. The list of actresses, actors, body builders, writers, artists, academian's, fitness trainers, etc, etc, etc.... would take exception to a statement that is mired in her irrational silliness.

Only a doofus who is intoxicated with delusion of being spring fresh young and innocent (over thirty years of age!) would think to the contrary and obvious. More delusional trash talking. I have heard black men and black women state they often cannot distinguish the difference between young black women who are in their early 20's and those who are in their late teens. They said it, not me. But I guess they all must either be over forty or think like someone over forty.

Really? And exactly how was I trying to provoke someone? And why would those pictures provoke you? Details please.... And while we're at it, there seems to be some unwarranted misplaced hostility towards me. Not that I can't handle it but I would like to reiterate the genesis of the post: 1.) The pictures were sent to me by a black woman. 2.) She told me the pics were sent to her in an e-mail from a fellow worker. 3.) The originator told her they were average looking black women. 4.) She solicited a co-workers opinion and he agreed with the originator of the e-mail. 5.) She forwarded the e-mail to me. 6.) I posted only two of the pictures (there were five total) here on our forum. 7.) I thought it was very hard core (the idea the two brothers felt they were average sized for black women) and I shared it with the readers of the board. THAT'S IT! Now I have been accused of serially posting morally questionable pictures of innocent unsuspecting female babies (as if I was the one who actually took the pictures) with the intent of degrading and mocking black women throughout cyberspace! WTF??!! The jest of the post has nothing to do with me! My friend thought her two black male co-workers were over the top. That is why she forwarded the e-mail to me. In fact, I have talked to her since I posted the pics (she lives one block up the street) and she dismissed what the two brothers said (although they are still good friends). We both laughed about it and talked about other things. She was very good natured about it. So once again, the origin of the pics nor the statement suggesting these young black women are average, have nothing to do with me! So why all the seething vitriol, caustic personal attacks and bitterness?

Receiving the photos and passing them on are two different things, Ntfs. I think most of what is posted on these boards is meant to "provoke"--folks want a conversation to get going and one of the ways conversations keep going is to post something in a context that will create varying reactions, including extremes on both ends.
There is nothing personal or hostile about that assessment. I think folks who post photos like that of themselves on the Internet (assuming they did) are leaving themselves open to be made fun of, and as such lose some of their privacy rights. Leaving this aside, I still am dubious that you, Ntfs, truly believe the image posted here was of "average" Black women--if what you mean by "average" is modal. And this, despite whatever other commenters your friend talked to might have said. "Knowing" the women on this board, I think that was a pretty "provoking" conversational frame to present these photos.
But if I misjudged your intentions, I do apologize. I do not feel hostility to you or anyone else on the board--As I have frequently said, I see this space as a halodeck where most folks except myself post anonymously and I receive nothing without an accompanying grain of salt. This space is what it is: someplace to have discussions, have fun, spend some time, share, and sometimes inform and be informed.

I agree. Many of the posts here are informative, some are in left field while others are purposely made to generate controversy. Just comb the board at look at the titles. But that is a good thing. It gives all of us the opportunity to pick and choose which posted articles or commentary we would like to respond to. And yes, the posts and the responses can be very extreme, from left to right. That’s what makes this forum fun.

This is very true. And the unfortunate side of that is sometimes people may think an innocuous photo is being taken only to have it posted in cyberspace without their knowledge or approval. I’m sure you know what I mean.

Yvettep, I never said these women were average. The original post began with: She said a black male friend of hers sent the pics and steadfastly maintains the black women in the pictures are of almost average physical proportion and size (and appearance!) for most American black women, particularly those in the South. She told me at first she thought he was joking. He said he was not. Again, I never said they were average size black women. I know they are not. But in one response to someone, I said, You don’t think they are of average size? That was a factious question. Just like I when someone has verbally blasted another person, I’ll make a short response by saying, What do you really think? or Does that mean you don’t like him/her? Again, those are obviously factious questions.

True. But I also knew there would be various opinions and comments. When someone post a thread like; BLACK MEN AIN'T SHIT THREAD, Black Looks, Do you consider Puerto Ricans Black?, Essence and Hot Black Male Bachelors...?, HYPOCRITE "Black Women" and White Men, BLACK and Mixed. or Quiz: Which females are biracial? Which ones are black?”, you know they were created to elicit responses. Nothing wrong with that. Again, that is the purpose or the board. To cajole, enlighten, encourage, enrage, inform, provide a smile or laugh and provoke. Without the aforementioned the board would be flat line. So yes, I knew there would be heated responses. But I never imagined the unwarranted vitriolic personal attacks, silly irrelevant age baiting (still haven’t figured that out) and hysterical moronic accusations of pedophilia about photos of young adults.

In the first pic, I think the women look like late teens (18+) to early 20's. And, "if black don't crack", as almost every poster on this board has suggested, these young women just look good for their age. Shyt, some of them could really be in their 30's. Nonetheless, I don't think these particular women represent black women, "on average". And, for those who think otherwise, I feel sorry for their limited perspective.
My sunsign tends to look at women like this in two ways. My logic tells me no one of that size should be dressed in such clothing (especially in public). However, the free-spirit in me says, "Who really gives a shyt?" There is something I respect about chics who aren't politically correct and completely unapologetic. Usually, my free-spirit reigns.
