One of the joys of my young daughters viewing the film "Akeelah and the Bee" is that they are able to hear a girl who looks like them utter these words.
Have a brilliant and fabulous day, all!

Actually who am I not to be?

I agree that those words AND the rest of "Akeelah and the Bee" are WONDERFUL.
Though, I can't help it: Whenever I see Laurence Fishburne and Angela Basset together on film, Ike and Tina will INEVITABLY come to mind.

This is so poignant.
On a writers forum I belong to, we're currently having a discussion on the fear of success. We have a number of writers who've spent years penning their novels, now that it's time to submit them to agents and editors - they're afraid. Many have stated that their fear is not rejection, (they accept that as par for the course), rather, they fear, "what if it's the next big thing?" The next DaVinci Code, for instance?
Most of them have average-Joe day jobs and lead anonymous lives and modest lifestyles. Should fame and fortune result from their writing and they become the coveted "celebrity writer," they haven't considered how they would begin to handle that level of success. |

Wonder why that is, Urban-Scribe? Why does the prospect of fame and fortune inspire intrepidation?? Why do those who seek the lime light eventually crave privacy. Maybe it has something to do with the fragile artistic temperment. Entertaining the idea of acquiring success is, in a way, an ego-trip and ego-trips are sometimes driven by insecurity or an inflated sense of self-esteem, a plateau some reach because their assets have been played up and their flaws played down. Who knows?? This could be why some successful artists turn to drugs and alchohol to take the edge off the stress that success can spawn. It was rumored that Kurt Cobain, the grunge icon, killed himself because he was consumed by the idea that he couldn't live up to the expectations of his fans, and that they would one day discover he was overrated. Go figure. |

So true, Cynique, so true. Every time I think of success the phrase "be careful what you wish for, you just might get it" keeps going through my mind. We all want to be successful but many of us are afraid of success. Like you said, "go figure." |
